I live on the trail head so to say and many many trails for hiking and cross country start here and on a fucking Sunday its more people here that in the city centre. Get a Veteran car.

Low road tax ( 450 kr ) and insurance because why pay full license if you're not going to use it everyday.
Not sure how it qualifies for Veteran status though.

Also simpler to maintain yourself, an older car.
Lots of choice for even 40,000 kr or less

Pic related will go a million km, has that Mercedes reliability without the electric or vacuum system problems, has the most comfy ride you can imagine, and they are great off road.
Rear seats also fold down giving you 2m of flat space.

Tax is 3300 kr if without Veteran status.
Maintenance is easy.

It's only a problem on pre-2009 models. My truck (the newer model) doesn't have the problem. It's also a 2016 so it really wouldn't anyways.

The problem is some foam they had behind the wheel wells. It held moisture and made then rust. This is what I was told anyways by my mechanic (who has always owned dodge trucks).

If you like the Vitara, or Grand Vitara, the Honda CRV, Toyota RAV4/Daihatsu Terios, Kia Sportage, and the Nissan XTrail are similar.

On the smaller side, there's also the Suzuki Jimny and Mitsubishi Pajero Pinin.

If off road capability is important, also consider the Mitsubishi Pajero.
The 4wd systems on the Grand Vitara and similar cars are for safety and traction on slippery roads, not actual off roading.

They Pajero may look much bigger than the Vitara, but the long Pajero is actually slightly narrower and equal in length to the E-Class Mercedes.
Hyundai Galloper is the the exact same car as a Pajero, with cosmetic changes and a cheaper price.

Mechanically, the Pajeros are very reliable.
Their standard tire is 245 so nice and wide too.

After 15 years and 300k km, the only thing I've ever replaced was the clutch some rubber bushings.

Isuzu Mu/Opel Frontera, Toyota 4runner, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, SsangYong Korando are other good options in your price range.

There's also the Chevy Blazer, Ford Explorer, Jeep Cherokee, Jeep Grand Cherokee, LandRover Freelander, but I know nothing about those.

For trails or farm roads a non truck 4wd with high range only is more than enough.

The biggest factor is always tires.
With appropriate tires, even a normal car can go some pretty nasty places.

I've actually never had to engage 4x4 on any trail and have only used it to purposely go off road.
Some of the Vitaras actually had low range too.

The RAV4 and its Japanese competitors are all pretty good and one isn't really better than the other, so the should be down to availability and personal preference.

I would say no

Yes, they are good off road, and I quite like them, but they are gas guzzlers, a d with the price of fuel, it'll be expensive for you.

They're also pretty unreliable. At least I should say they require a lot of maintaining. If you take care of it, and keep up on the maintenence, they are good. If this is your first vehicle though, it can be a lot to take care of.

Also, since it's your first vehicle, you'll probably never use all of the Land Rover's capabilities. Meaning, it'll go way more places than you can ever take it. A smaller, more fuel efficient 4x4, will take you everywhere you want, and be cheaper to own and maintain.

Buy a small 4x4 SUV, get aggressive all terrain tires, and you'll be able to do a lot.

Alright, it's got the most reliable engine of the defender series the TD5 (imo) which is a 5 sylindre diesel engine made by BMW.
It's also the latest model with that engine, from 2007 onwards they fit the DuraTorq puma ford engines which i don't find reliable at all.
It's the 110 version which means bigger space inside, i can fit a double bed in the rear if i remove some of the seats (3 bolts) and its a small camping vehicle.

Another reason is that the Defender has tons of spare parts and modifications that are relatively cheap, it's simple to repair with just basic car knowledge and it isn't that bad when it comes to fuel consumption (I get 8,2 per 100km)

It's a car in its purest form, really simple. The only downside is it's electronics :( My indicators doesn't work ATM haha.

Like I said earlier, the mechanics of the Discovery are reliable - but oil leaks are common.
An oil leak might fail your yearly inspection.

The diesels are fuel efficient even compared to a small gasoline car.
The V8 have no real purpose.

The electronics are the biggest weakpoint. You never know what will break and it's difficult to diagnose.
Even simple stuff like the horn or lights can stop working. Both will fail you on inspection.
You might wake up one day to find your lights dont work.
Is it a fuse? Maybe the second fuse? The bulbs? A relay? Shorted wires? The stalk on the wheel?
Easy €80 for an automotive electrician.
Next week its your reverse lights.

Month after that the A/C won't turn on.

And since these cars have a lot of problems, they will undoubtedly have passed through the hands many technicians and have been the subject of many quick fixes.


And if you plan on any modifications, you will need to get them certified by an engineer, but that is for all vehicles.

Buy the best car you can and grow into it.

It's not that bad when it comes to fuel efficiency.
I bought it in Norway, the defender keeps well so the price is quite high, you can keep one for a few years and sell it for about the same price.
It set me back 230 000 Nok which is about 23k GPB. I was lucky though, the guy selling it had no idea how to price it so i gave him a lower bid and he accepted it. Saved alot of money that way.

265/75/16s fit in on stock height. I'd know - I had 32 inch Duratracs for 3 months before getting the keys installed.

Be careful t-bar cranking. On my Ranger anything more than an inch or so extra height made the front end feel like complete dog shit. Really stiff and not fun to drive.

I also had a shop install new lower control arms recently, and when they put it back together they maxed out the t-bars for some reason.The control arms began impacting the frame like crazy and of course had to be dropped back down.

Ford engineers designed the suspension to stay within a pretty limited range. Anything more than an inch is too much in my experience. Aftermarket torsion keys or any other snake oil bullshit shops try to sell you won't change that.

As >>973738 mentioned, the torsion bar crank will make the ride really, really uncomfortable. Same thing with add-a-leaf. It really just stiffens up the suspension and bumps it harder than a stock YJ.

The keys are the part that connects the torsion bars to the suspension and changing the angle can get you 3 more inches of lift. I have found that they aftermarket keys actually better suspension. That along with the added weight from the front bumper and Duratrac tyres makes this a pretty damn comfortable vehicle

Bullbar's fine. The good thing about them is you can always sell them if you don't like.
Plus you can knock down single trees that you hit head on.

My understanding of torsion bar lifts (albeit limited; I'm no engineer) is that the angle of the bar is not inherently changed by keys. Aftermarket keys simply allow the bar to twist further, thus increasing the "lift" effect on the front control arms.

In my mind key lifts are snake oil.

#1 - Control arms can only travel down so far before they impact other parts, such as the frame. My stock keys allowed enough movement / lift to do this already. Changing the keys doesn't change the position of the frame in relation to the control arms, so any aftermarket parts are ultimately limited at the exact same spot as stock parts.

#2 - Rangers are old trucks. I'd wager that most torsion bars are getting a bit rusty by now. I'm not personally comfortable loading those bars beyond stock and twisting them more than they are supposed to, regardless of what keys they're connected to. Shit scares me. No clue if this is relevant or not, but worth thinking about.

#3 - When my keys were maxed out, the CV angle on my front end was fucking ridiculous. The boot was starting to fold over on itself. Irregular angles like this mean increased wear on critical parts. If the boot tears during an impact and lets a bunch of dirt in, you'll likely be replacing the CV, which is a pain in the ass and somewhat expensive.

If you want 33" tires on a Ranger fitted properly, you need a new front end.

YES, you can technically fit a skinny 33x10.5 or something, but you will still have rub on the sway bar and front valence. Probably other places too at full lock / flex (this is what matters in offroading -- mall crawlers fuckoff). And then there's also the topic of regearing. I have 4:10s in my truck and I can tell you right now it wouldn't be enough for 33" tires.

IMO 32" is maximum size on stock, 31" is recommended.

I get autistic over those scenarios. I mostly do bush camping rather than established trails. That means lots of navigating shitty uneven terrain and sneaking through trees and over stumps. Steering is locked up more often than not, so I get really nervous about front end geometry that may not work in extreme scenarios. Don't wanna get stuck where a tow is impossible, y'know?

A winch and bumper is on my wishlist.

01 subaru forester st-b. AWD combined with some decent winters makes it fairly easy to plow through most road conditions and the turbo makes a bit more fun. Wish it had a bigger fuel tank and didn't require premium. And a bit more ground clearance and a metal skid plate so I wouldn't have to worry so much about smashing important engine bits while blasting around forestry roads.

Depending on the age, the Defender will have less electrics to go wrong.
The Discovery is more civilized, has "better seats" and a more car like driving position, more headroom at the back and unlike the defender, it doesn't turn unto a literal oven in the summer.
But you can take the roof and windows off a Defender, at least.

Cranking the t bars extends the shocks. If the shocks don't have enough travel to extend when the load is relaxed, the ride gets really harsh as the shocks are topping out on every dip in the road.
Any suspension lift beyond 2-3cm (e.g. cranking the t bars) warrants a serious look at the shock absorbers.

Im gonna import it to my country (Norway) when a guy i know has fixed the documents with DPS.

The brown "tweed" seats were for some reason really interesting to me as a kid, having been used to leather/vinyl previously.

When my dad's van broke down, we towed it with the Lada.

It depends on manufacturer and how big the tires actually end up being (they all vary a little bit), but by measurement alone those should fit.

My understanding is they are somewhere between a 31" and a 32". It might be tight when steering is locked and the suspension is loaded (as I've mentioned), but in regular driving conditions it will be okay. If there is a problem, the first place you'd get rub will likely be on the sway bar end link, so I would just keep an eye on it for scuff marks. I think it'll be fine tho

As far as the torsion lift -- just to be clear, I think it's fine to raise it up a little bit. Mine is increased 0.75" and I prefer it that way over stock. I think the trouble only starts when people start cranking it up 2-3+". It makes the CV and control arms angles way out of spec. And as another anon reminded us, it also messes with your shocks.

Does anyone have/had a Subaru Baja? I always wanted one, and now that I have the dough, they no longer make them. Only ones I've found within 300 miles have at least 160,000 miles on them. I'd be ok with 80,000 if it wasn't otherwise ragged.

Also, you'll have a hell of a time finding an aftermarket bumper for the Ranger since all the international companies make bumpers for the international Rangers. I got mine at a local fab who does all my work. See what pricing you get and bolt patterns and all - same thing with the winch.

Just meet some offroad bros who you can call up and give $50 to winch you out of areas. After a few runs on the trails, they might even be owing you some favours... Otherwise, two farm jacks, 4 pieces of wood, and traction aids are your best help.

Also remember that you can chain your tyres in mud for added grip but be careful of large rocks. I did this in my 2WD Colorado with much help.

Anyway, regarding the torsion keys. I am still very, very pleasantly surprised.

If you think Spanish gas is cheap, try British car maintenance. Unless you have solid connexions in high-class junkyards or a field of dying LRs, the maintenance on Discos are very expensive. Same goes with the Defenders but to a lessor degree but worse on fuel.
They have a "parts lottery" where shit just breaks randomly and costs $500 (or E300) to replace at odd intervals.

The older G-Wagons would be more expensive to repair but much, much less frequently. Plus more reliable mechanical parts that actually run the vehicles.

I'm a member of a fairly huge 4x4 club and I go on group runs every now and then, so begging for a tow is definitely an option sometimes. But, I like to be as self-sufficient as possible. Most of the places I camp / hunt are -very- far from reception, and mostly unknown by the general public (I have unique access to gated native land that typical wheelers do not). It wouldn't be right for me to invite them in because I fucked up.

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Lada it was just unexpected to so many of them in Norway. But I kinda get it, seen that there is a border with Russia. Also my dad had Lada when I was a kid, it wasn't a Samara but the other model, the one that looked like a box of matches. I remember it was navn blue and it had no servo steering but he had reenforced suspensions because of some smugling he did back then in the 90'. Lada is still pretty common in Removerland.

But, the bad news is that Dana makes IFS components too. And the new Bronco is supposed to be built on the same platform as new Ranger. The new Ranger is almost guaranteed to have IFS.

In the absence of a come-along/ground anchor or tyre chains, here's what I would do: cut down a tree and shove it under the tyres whilst digging around the mud. Use the rocks around the area to hammer in the sticks. Normally I have found that 4-5 sticks do not ever do anything for traction and you'd need at least 9 under each wheel to get enough grip. Then in front and behind the sticks, add rocks (the largest you have) to prevent stick movement and to give you a hard surface to end up on. Then lower the PSI to 7-9 (yes. that low) and put it into 2nd gear. Forward and reverse whilst turning the steering wheel to get yourself onto the tree that you have shoved under your wheels. Then gain enough inertial momentum to get where you were unstucc.

These steps are made much easier with two farm jacks and a plank of wood. (or a winch, heh).

If I had a shell I'd build a platform. Would be sweet to roll up to camp and already have my shelter and bed set up. For now I just use a folding mattress that fits between the wheel wells.

They're usually called "folding guest beds" and work way better than air mattresses, if you don't mind the bulkiness. 10/10 top recommended truck sleep system. Best sleep you'll ever have, comfy af

This is my next project.

Building a 6 1/4" high platform between the wheel wells out of 12mm ply.
First 3' will be two sliding drawers.
The remainder 3' at the back will have a ply lid that opens from the top.

Also building a cover for the wheel wells that is 20" high and covers the length of the bed. The mattress is just a 3" thick piece of foam that I will roll up and tie to the ceiling of the shell.

Yeah. Drove mine to 300,000+. GREAT truck! So wish they still made them like that. Only big repair was drive line seals (rear main and differential) at 220,000. Dude that did the work forgot to put oil in the differential. Went a mile and a half away from the shop and a mile and a half to get my money back. It had pretty bad highway noise after that, but drove fine. Got $4000 trade in on a new Taco in 2005.

I don't really know much about working on cars beyond general maintenance so my questions might be kind of dumb.

Blame regulation. Small trucks with body on frame construction are impossible to make safe, and standard and extended cab trucks get fucked by emissions footprints.

Can't tell much from the pic. Might be foreshadowing with the sunset and all. For $1500 it's a good deal if you don't have to put more than a $1000 into non-routine maintenance to get it to 200,000. I'd still get mechanic to look at it if you don't know much. If it's been on CL more than a few days, something on it likely needs immediate attention.

I didn't know they made a factory one ton. Maybe so since they're actually made by Muni, a company that mainly makes commercial trucks.

I live in a town of 50,000, and I still see at least one of these on any decent size construction job. $1500 is just a good price for it if it runs, but you might want to talk her down to $1200 in case the JB-Weld on the head blows out before you get it home.

I will be building my own soon. The tank will be a 6' long, 4" diameter pvc pipe and I will be using 2 of these aliexpress 12v immersion heaters.
For pressure I'm fitting a tyre air valve so I can pressurize the "tank" with a compressor.

20-30l water tank made of 1mm steel is mounted instead of right rear seat. Rear heater pipeline from front right seat is extended to the tank and entered in it by a copper coil. The tank has 10mm fiting to connect the pipe to the pedal shower like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2AJ8bM87Kj4 it consists of two valves operate by foot pressure. The engine heats coolant in cooling system and thus heats the water. Engine temperature is about 85 C, it is enough for heating the water so it takes required to mix with a little bit of cold water before using for comfort temperature. I thought to use aliexrpess 12v 60wt pump to make a pressure but it'd more expencieve and very more complicated. I prefer the simplest solutions though without any electricity, kek. The tank could be filled from anything - from a pipe, from a jerrican, from a bucket.

Certainly, the system can work only on started and warmed up to operating temperature engine, but in this case I have also Webasto heater that I can use for warming the coolant when engine is off. But I usually collect the water out of the place where I'm going to have a shower so during the ride to there the water will be warmed up.

These are just my sketches without a strict calculation, the system is still in the process of assembling and I really don't know whether this will work, but I hope it will.
