Still looking for good stuff for the Pastebin and Imgur. Maybe we can get a list of Youtube vids and put them in the Pastebin or keep a couple important ones in the OP.

Thinking about picking up a new hobby? Want to get a memecaster? Haven't mastered the Palomar knot? Click here!

Ned rigs are meme bass tactics. Are there any other ones?

Calling it a ned rig is what makes it a meme. Its just half a worm on a ball head jig, nothing meme about it.

Okay Shimano rep. Thanks for the info. Have a good night and enjoy your 2 inch Japanese penis.
>>
>>965964
Chatter meme is the best meme honestly man. It catches fish that a lipless crank and a spinner bait would catch. Now.....it's not perfect and some days either of those baits out perform it but its stupid good. I wish I knew why it worked. But it just does.
>>
>>965967
Thanks!

>>965970
Yeah we were using my rods and I was hoping I'd get to that one first, but I also don't mind seeing big fish blow up on a spook.
>>
>>965971
Top water is great when it works. I wish it just worked as often as a chatter meme. Z Man brand or not chatter baits work year round. It upsets me that I throw them so often but they work get in Arizona resovoirs. I can fish them in 2 feet or 40 feet of water depending on head weight loss. Everything here is a massive flooded canyon. Some of the stuff drops to 150 feet or more.

ok someone here told me a few weeks ago to try a hook and a worm no weights but i could only cast it like ten feet and it tangled up my line every fifth cast

what do?
>>
>>965976
Sounds like your tackle could be too heavy for the task. Live worm or artificial? The real deal will obviously weight significantly less than a plastic worm and an unweighted hook isn't adding much weight to the equation. I'd try a light or ultralight rod with a pretty wispy tip to impart more flick into the cast. Something between 6 and 7 foot paired with a light spinning reel. 4# mono or 10# braid as lighter, thinner line is going to behave better. Light bait/lures stop pulling line quickly which lets the line over-run the cast (even on spinning tackle) much like a baitcaster spool over-running if it's rotation isn't kept in check with how fast the lure is moving during a cast.
>>
>>965976
Generally you should do that with a spinning reel unless you're tossing something dense and solid like a 6 inch stick bait or brush hog.

Also your line size and reel matters
>>
>>965979
>>965980
i went to walmart and bought a cheapo spinning reel with 8# mono on it, thought that would be small enough
>>
>>965981
>bought a cheapo spinning reel with 8# mono on it
Is that to say it came pre-spooled with line? Mono has pretty "good" memory in that it holds shape and will maintain a lot of the curl from being wound around a spool (fluorocarbon can be a bigger pain in the ass, and braid has essentially no memory). Who knows how long that line has been sitting tightly coiled on the the reel's spool before you bought it. With some more casting and retrieving you might be able to work some of the memory out but I still think 8# is a little too heavy for the task. I find memory can be a bother enough so that I even prefer to to spool my reels from the larger service spools instead of the small spools you'd find at Wal-Mart or most sporting goods stores. If I haven't used a particular reel in a while I'll even go ahead and re-spool rather than wasting time trying to cast out any memory that has developed in the line.

Anyway I can't estimate the total weight easily but the lightest thing I usually throw on 8# mono is a 1/16 oz jig head with a 5" Yamamoto single-tail or hula grub. That's a fair size chunk of soft plastic on an already weighted hook and it works fairly well. I'd have to figure in total it weighs well in excess of 1/4 oz because even those tiny Rapala balsa cranks marked 1/4 oz don't cast well on the same setup.

So TLDR - Still pretty sure the gear is too heavy for such light bait.
>>
>>965984
>>965976

just tell the god damn guy to crimp on bullet or split shot for now.

if its live bait, catch a catfish or something. if its a plastic worm you have a nice little mojo rig
>>
>>965984
it tangled pretty bad, probably gonna have to respool it if i ever use it again
do you think 8# braid would be light enough?

You put the weight far up the line, not on the worm. Then you have casting distance and action.

>>
>>966106
Did you read the post I was replying too? He said weights further up the line (i.e. Carolina rig) make you cast further which doesn't make any sense.
>>
>>966113
I said that and it does make sense because that's exactly what you need to do. It isn't a Carolina rig due to the distance from the worm to the weight being a great deal further (several feet).

You can also use a lead core leader that is a few feet long with a mono leader on the end.
>>
>>966135

no it doesnt, when you add weight up the line it makes it fly through the air all fucked up and not go anywhere decent

Here you go Bepsi. Hope you approve
>>
>>966135
Nigga u dumb. The best place for a weight is at the end of your line.
>>
>>966144
>>966138
Sure it is better to have it at the end of the line, but you can still cast further with a weight on the line up above and still have proper action of the lure at the end. Switching them kills the action. without the weight, frogposter >>965976 will be lucky to cast anywhere at all.

What he has labeled a jerk bait is incorrect. He's too retarded to use a bait caster so he's says they are shut when they are objectively better for heavy lures. He's just a retard. Jerkbaits are not top water lures. He may be an idiot describing a wake bait which is still different from other top water lures.

Never buy a spin cast reel. They are garbage. Get a bait caster and spinning reel. Use the spinning reel for drop shots.

Jesus. YouTube the "informative fishermen" guy. Way better than that MS paint shut guide.

>>966231

>>966325

>>966254
for a beginner looking for a rod
>>
>>966327
An ugly stick will work but it isn't very sensitive. You will miss light biting fish. It's good for bait and circle hooks as a budget rod. I have one for a sabiki rig for catching bait fish because it can get banged around and survive.

Browning makes good rods for 50 to 70 bucks. If you get near the 70 dollar mark look at an Abu Garcia vendetta rod. Very good for the money. Bass pro bionic blade or extreme rods are good for 70 to 100 bucks. St Croix rods are hard to go wrong with.

Tackle warehouse has a lot of rods on sale right now. All graphite is best for bass fishing. You only want a glass graphite mix rod with a slower action for crank baits as a dedicated rod only for that. Get a medium heavy weight fast action rod for bait casting with an Abu orra line reel or 100 dollar lews or 13 fishing reel. If you want to spend more get a citica or curado and YouTube how to use them. For spinning get a medium weight fast action rod for spinning with a 3000 size plfueger president or Shimano Sahara reel.

>>
>>966338
Telling them not to worry about the action of the rod is beyond retarded. If they are pitching and flipping jigs they need a medium heavy at a bare minimum with a fast action or they won't get good hook sets. Same goes for any wide gap or worm hooked plastic they are throwing.

The info graphic is good but telling everyone they shouldn't use a bait caster is fucking stupid. They work way better for spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, jigs, top water spooks etc etc. If it's 3/8 Oz or more it should be thrown on a baitcaster. But you think hey are retarded because you're too dumb to read how to use one or watch a video.

3500 is way too big of a reel for anything medium weight or lower and 7 foot or less. Especially for bass and freshwater.

3000 is max size needed. You should recommend a copolymer line over mono. It is more sensitive and ties easy and has a little less stretch. Dedicated spinnerbaits or wire baits need mono so you done bend the inline wires.

Honestly spinning reels work wait better with a braid to fluorocarbon leader. No line twist and way better sensitivity for drop shots and Ned rigs.
>>
>>966351
This is for beginners just getting into fishing

Chances are they won't be pitching into weeds from a 50k bass boat
Or using a memecaster
There's already a separate section on what if you want a memecaster
>>
>>966357
It's still stupid not to suggest one and to tell them to get a medium light rod and that action doesn't matter. It really does matter.
>>
>>966364
Because someone who has never fished before is going to know what kind of action they need for what kind of fishing right? That's something you learn as you go
>>
>>966369
You're a dumb fuck if you think they should just get any old action rod.

had a few before.. old hummingbird, low end garmin and a intro lowrance. it all depends on what you need one for. I like that I can use them for navigation. no more pulling out the cellphone (though i still use the navionics app on the phone when i'm in sloughs and shallow areas) gps changed my life as far as getting here and there and knowing where you are in relation to what. down imaging and sideview changed the game because damn..i can see every bit of structure and what hanging around it really clearly. difference is also noticed when setting sensitivity ranges. my first ff's i could never dial them in completely, too many arcs turned out to be debri. with the helix models I kind of know whats what because they have higher resolutions and are more graphic if that makes any sense. I usually run the di and sonar side by side. the di will pinpoint the structure and the sonar will show the fish arcs (air bladders)
one thing i do find a bit annoying now is my dependency on the electronics. it runs my life when i'm on the water. I feel like im constantly staring at the ff not checking out the scenery or watching that bird fly by..

>had a few before.. old hummingbird, low end garmin and a intro lowrance. it all depends on what you need one for.

Ha, I still keep the cell phone out.

Sounds like DI and SI are the big difference. I'm out deep a lot so not sure how useful they would be.

I'm hooked on mine too. Sometimes half the fun is seeing what shows up on the screen.

If I am recalling how it works correctly for Texas, you register the the motor with it's title number under your name. You then register that registration number with your boat title number and receive a number code that you put on your boat.

Yeah Texas sucks for motor boats. But you dont have to do this for non motorized boats or sail boats under a 24'...I think...not looking it up right now.

Yeah it is, pretty sensitive for a 40+ year old rod. Wonder why they stopped using wood handles and glass is still a thing.
>>
>>966537
Yeah, I meant 70s at the latest btw. Its really old, too brittle to use. I like wood handles too, I'd buy a rod that offered a nice shiny one. I guess they're just less durable, they can get waterlogged, cracked, brittle, splinter. Solid cork is my personal favorite, not a fan of foam or split grips.
>>
>>966537
Wood cracks and splinters and is heavy. Glass fiber is heavy too. Weight is one of the reason sensitivity is another reason lol

Shimano is very clearly a Japanese company. Just because Toyota makes cars in the US doesn't mean the design is not of Japanese origin and has no Japanese parts.

You can't literally order Japanese domestic market (JDM) reels and lures from Japan by Shimano and Daiwa. River to sea is another Japanese company. They make the whopper plopper.

Xuron 496 split ring pliers.

Before that, I used a knife, thumbnail, or screw driver (plus safety googles because they can fly pretty far!) Sometimes the parts you want to put together can wedge in and open it enough to slip on. The split ring pliers are a god send and you don't end up with flying split rings. I recommend everyone get one if they need to use split rings very often. Other brands have other built in "tools" along the jaws for crimping and cutting.

>>
So what are the cons of braid? All I've heard is that trout are line shy and you have to use a leader.

I've been thinking about giving it a go instead of mono because I like the idea of having no line stretch and lots of test strength to rip my lure out of weeds
>>
>>966838
>no line stretch
>reduces casting distance
>very visible in the water compared to mono/flouro

That's all I can think of t b h. Braid has gotten pretty good in the last however many years. I run braid on almost everything now. Mono/flouro definitely still have their place though
>>
>>966838
I use high visibility yellow for my braided. It is bright enough that even when night fishing I can easily tie knots and find it when there's no bad cloud cover. I still use mono leaders for a number of reasons.
>>
>>966838
Pretty much this >>966840 but I'll add a couple things.

Braid isn't as smooth as mono, so the same diameter braid won't cast quite as far as if it were mono. But if you go from 10lb mono to 10lb braid, the casting distance will be so much better than braid because the line is lighter.

So that, then visibility which doesn't even matter for lots of species of fish but you can always use a flouro leader, lack of line stretch which I prefer because it is so much more sensitive but you have to be careful not to set the hook super hard, and besides that you just have to watch for fraying especially if you are fishing saltwater with sharp corals and rocks or some shit or going for toothy fish. Also braid is lighter and floats so it can make lures run shallower.

I think I have a post in the Pastebin about it. I love braid now. The sensitivity makes it so much better. I can run 20lb line on a combo I used to have 10lb mono on and have twice the strength while still being able to cast further than the 10lb mono and have more line capacity. Also braid lasts much longer than mono. If you fish a lot, mono starts to get weak and brittle within a few months while braid holds its strength for years if it doesn't get frayed. Along with that, it doesn't have the memory like mono where the line looks like a slinky when you cast. Feels gud when you land a fish that dug into weeds when you would've lost it if that same combo were still 8lb or 10lb mono.
>>
>>966854
>you have to be careful not to set the hook super hard

I never thought of that, I bet you could catch a pair of fish lips if you really put your back into it
>>
>>966859
It also depends on the type of hook you are using as to how hard you need to set the hook. Like a circle hook needs to be set with a slower steady pull, in order to get it to hook in the corner of the mouth when the fish turns, while other hooks need a sharp sudden pull.
>>
>>966813
>BassPro
Their lure selection in store is pretty decent but not really great prices.
The rod selection in my BPS sucks. Sure, there's a bunch but they don't have any real decent rods. Try finding a 7' L 1-piece. I can find at least 2 or 3 in every small bait & tackle locally. There's always a few at Dick's. BPS, nothing....
Also the Berkley lightning I got from Wally World for $19 was $49-54 at BPS. If it weren't for the big ass Sebile swimmers for $4.88 instead of $19-39 I wouldn't have a reason to BPS

>>

>>
>>966864
Eh no line memory so that's not possible at all.
A legitimate cons:
Price and knot tying braid to mono
>>
>>966867
They happen to me somewhat often, I don't think it is necessarily caused by wind either. Since the braid isn't as springy as the mono, it will "pile up on itself" when it is coming off the spool and going through the guides. Then you notice it when retreiving or on the next cast. I think it happens this way because it is never a problem with casting reels, only spinning.
>>
>>966542
The rod I caught porgies on was relatively light for me, I could feel and see the pecks from the smaller guys.
>>
>>966933
>not possible
Ehh, I do understand how it happens. Braid is light and the wind can blow it around much easier than mono or flouro. Plus it is so flexible that it can get knotted if you are careless and let a bunch of excess line blow around in a heavy wind.
>>
>>966937
I only had it to me one time when I was on a boat in the middle of a reservoir and was trying to bomb heavy baits in the wind. It would always happen 10-12 ft away from the lure, shit was annoying
>>
>>966933
>>966937
Also your cons:
>Price
Idk man, if you fish a lot and take care of your shit, it can actually end up being cheaper in the long run. A 300yd spool of good mono is like $7-$10, right? 300yd spool of good braid is around $30. So it's 3x-4x the price in the beginning.

But mono get weak so fast with sun and consistent use that you have to change it at the beginning of each spring minumum. Being down here with year round warm weather and sun, plus fishing 3 days a week, I would need to change my mono out every 6mos. Decent braid will last years. Tackle shop guy I trust said run it for 2yrs, unspool it, put it back on the opposite way, and you are good for another 2yrs. My oldest braid is like 4yrs old right now and shit is still goin strong.
>>
>>966931
Nah man. Tuck my rod under my armpit. Then swing the bag in front of me, get what I need, swing bag back, tie, then fish. If I can't get something for whatever reason I'll walk back to shore, but its not really a big deal to do that in rivers/creeks.

I do have a have shirt that I like to use when wading that has some front pockets to keep a pack or two of soft plastics and my phone and stuff. I would probably rock a vest if I found a decent one, but the only time I wade is when it's hot and I don't want to be wearing one then.
>>
>>966941

>>
Danm rain
>>
>>966964
I don't think anyone here mono backs their braid, it really isn't necessary at all especially on casting reels since they all have the hole to tie your line through to prevent slippage. Braid is better than mono in every way except how easily it knots, but you figure out how to avoid it with some experience anyways.

get both like i did. they're just about equal performers but i do like the curado's braking a bit better. the tatula ct's are cheaper online and word on the skreet is a new curado is on the way, as noted by the new chronarch.

SV spool has trickled down to tatula but that's 200 bucks which is chronarch money since the price drop/sale.

it's really impossible to go wrong.

if you really want to go crazy get a curado 200e7 online.

Honestly once you start spending 120 or more on a reel it's going to be hard to buy a total pile of shit. You may get a lemon or some bulls hit nearer to 100 dollars than 200 but just handle both and see what you like

If you put money down tackle warehouse will let you mail order in reels to try out for 7 business days and mail back or of you have spent over 500 dollars cumulatively with them. When you return the reel they give your money back

if you've got the time to carve or access to a stationary belt sander, making a cork handle into a split grip is pretty easy. just be careful not to cut into the blank.

once you go split grip it's hard to go back.
>>
>>965950
No it isn't. You can't fish a ned rig with a cut down senko or a yum. It has to be a z-man plastic because the tails float up.
>>
>>966875

if you've spent more than a few minutes on a wind knot and are convinced that you'll have to cut your line, before you cut it pull the knot as hard as you can, if possible with two pieces of wood or something where you won't cut your hands. it'll probably slip right apart.

sometimes 'wind knots' aren't from wind, fishing in heavily wooded areas and snags will sometimes get shit all fucked up when you're snatching out a lure out of brush and weeds.
>>
>>967159
Usually if I have to pull it means the braid will break. maybe 50/50.

I made the grip by shaping first, then split it down the center and carved out a half pipe in both sides, then fit it back together around the handle. The butt I made by shaping the wood, then drilling into it until it fit on the end of the blank. I could have done it way nicer if I had access to a wood lathe or belt sander, but I'm kinda limited in the tools I can use currently.

Any reccomendations for backpacking/travel rod for fresh/saltwater? Is penfishingrods worth it or even this?
>>
>>967166
If you make another, just a drill as a lathe.
>>

Just get a 3 piece travel rod by st Croix or a 4 piece. Works way better. Stronger. Eyelets don't go out of alignment. Etc

Multi rods. If it's that bad I switch rods and deal with it later. I've yet to have to cut the line. Just takes patience sometimes & if the bite is on I don't want to be watching.

TThenat the end of the night when she has let her guard down, say in a low voice "I want to take your ass and fist it". If she says ok, you are good to go. If she is all like "what did you say", just play it off and tell her you said "I want to take you bass fishing".

damn bruh i used to have so similar a setup. except that can beer.
DI and 360° works to around 100'+ beyond that I rely on sonar to show marks. how deep do you fish? my use is mainly to mark fish, search for structure, find rockpiles, poop pipes, reefs and high or low spots the DI will show pretty much everything, Ive seen some shit...lol
SI i had a bunch of oh fuk moments. like unlocking a new level in a video game. couldnt get my head around it for a while, like too much information. had me talking to myself like "theres a car right there" or "is that a shopping cart?" or "feeesh! fucking drop!..drop!"

its very common on larger reels (saltwater) the higher drag pressures can make braid shift and bind on a spool which in turn can snap a spool in half. ive personally seen it happen.

also the braid is better argument has been proven incorrect many times over. mono or at least a mono topshot is actually better in many situations.

>>967005
A truth with modifications... due to braid being less stiff I find it gets tangled up easier and the mess of a tangle is easier to sort out in mono than in braid.
Also on baitcasting reels (it's what they are called in English I think - see picture) braid has a tendency to dig in as >>967240 says.
And, at least for me, the first few meters of my line gets all flossy when using braid due to the beating it gets. I fish saltwater though so maybe that has some influence as well.

Most normal sized baits with large bills usualy max out around 20'-40' at the most. I know at Gander they have over sized crank shaped baits with giant bills that we use to troll in Canada in 100'+ water for pike

>week long cold temps after some spring-like weather past month
>might get ton of snow tuesday
>next week majority of streams are closed before trout season opens next month
Right now im just looking for more spots to explore.
Got this field report that the state did for wild trout streams and im currently just marking spots on google maps to scope out good parking and whether or not the land is posted/private.

I kind of hate how some really nice spots that are hidden away are posted, but i guess that compliments the fact that it stays a nice spot over time.

This is a legit tactic to protect your secret spot. It doesn't matter who owns the land. No one ever takes the signs down if you put them up, but other fishermen usually stop at the signs.
