Scotland. The mountains aren't high and there aren't two trees to rub together -- but that's what makes it so great, really. The Scottish Highlands are an endless, empty stretch of grass and heather stretching across a million hills with mysterious names. Wild camping is legal, hitchhiking is easy, all streams are clean enough to drink from. It's the best country in the world for blazing your own trail.
>>
>>959180
So where do I sleep?

It's nice but not enough to be the best one. Looking only at that Scandi countries outplay Scotland in many points, from size to higher mountains.

My favorites in order are:
>Spain
Incredible diversity of landscape, from northern hardwood forest to southern Mediterranean forest, from the High Pyrenees to the desert
>Italy
More wilderness than you think, so many edible plants you can literally make soup out of a hedge
>Balkans
Heavily forested mountain range with rainbow of cultures, what more do you want?

Actually I've never been to the Alps or Carpathians/Tatra, so feel free to redpill me on those.

Also, Morocco has some sweet hikes, pic related.
>>
>>959182
Aight, I'll buy that, but do they have the same romance? The Scottish highlands were heavily populated until the 19th century, and the whole landscape bleeds history. I guess I'd say the region has personality.

Not him, but I prefer untouched nature. I know its hard to get by in europe, but the scandis and the balkans can provide more than the rest of europe.

I also like switzerland and austria, as love mountaineering and its not far from my home.

Wonderful, but can be touristy and expensive. Still worth it.
>Carpathians
Cover a huge area, so very varied. Some parts are touristy, others are quite devoid of human presence. Not quite as high, but can still be dramatic, pic related. Large predators still present.

I think there is a lot of potential in Eastern Europe but I have never had the chance to head /out/ there. Once I have walked the best looking trails closer to home I would like to head there.
>>
>>959388
Apart from having walked in both Scotland and a lot in northern Scandinavia I have actually hiked quite a bit in eastern Europe - I've hiked in Poland, Hungary and Romania. I can really recommend it. Prices are dirt cheap and there are large and somewhat unspoiled areas of forests and mountains. Where I've been the mountains haven't been as dramatic as in Norway or the Alps but on the other hands they aren't surrounded by as much civilization as in western Europe.

And be prepared to communicate with other means than just speaking english to them. We managed quite fine in Romania with a mix of English and what we knew of German and French combined with pointing, sign language and a few local words we picked up.

This is your reminder that Russia is classified as a European country and all other answers are thus wrong by definition.
>>
Apart from the Caucasus, where's good in western Russia?
>>
>>961128
All sorts of places.
Apart from the Caucasus, there's parks up by Finland, out on the Baltic, along the Volga and on the European side of the Urals. And that's just the results of one quick web search.
Now granted it IS Russia, so I get why people don't want to go there. But if you really want to get away from everywhere, that's the place to go.

Hej igen min danske ven
Scandinavia is indeed the best place of all. maybe because of the "allemansret" wich means you can camp and stay the night anywhere you want. Even on private land if you stay only one night and isn't too obnoxious about it.
Basically you can go and stay anywhere for a while, if you are not a dick about it.

The only country that can combine city life and /out/ is luxembourg. I went there for 3 days, loved it. Beautiful rolling hills and dense woods, along with historical buildings.
Other than that I can think of Norway, and, while it technically doesn't count, Eastern Turkey/North Kurdistan
Thats what I love about Europe, something for everyone. If you like nature integrated with cities, go to Luxembourg. If you like snow and dense taiga mountains, go to Norway. If you like rolling hills as far as the eye can see and the occasional swim while not minding heat, East Turkey is nice
These are just the places I've been and I hope to see more. I have been to Italy but didn't really see nature. Pic related is Luxembourg

Scotland has its challenges, there are still many ways to climb the face of Ben Nevis for example that even pros keep coming back to. I'd say it was more about the 'magic' of Scotland and the alpine tundra of the Cairngorms or the other-worldliness of Skye and the islands with their beaches and emptiness that really appeals to the soul, if you're into that kind of thing.

Personally I really like the tatras in Slovakia. I would love to go to Scandinavia too.

>>
>>964291

Where in Finland was this, roughly?

I can imagine in the countryside a strange-looking hiker coming in to ask for water sounds suspiciously similar to the fabled "Polish art students" going door-to-door and selling their drawings as a ploy for checking out the house for shit worth stealing. Not saying it was the case here but anyway.
>>

i know my dad lived in Kiruna around that time so i am assuming it would be just around the border there. might just be an old man spinning tall tales though not sure, but, i have legite, ately never heard anything positive hiking wise on finland, always stories about unfriendly locals and such, glad if its not true, really want to visit
>>
>>964318
The only way to know is to try it.

From Kiruna to border crossing at Karesuando/Karesuvanto is about 200 km or so. Plenty of areas to explore close by (Lapland close by standards).
>>
>>964318
Madsen FYI,

there are national parks, free to visit, services can be found etc.

Then there are "wilderness areas" - some have huts, some are without marked trails and huts.

Then there's also "strict nature reserves", some are closed up and off limits for any form of travel without a written permit. Some have marked trails (like Kevo).

I had a 10 day trip to the Tatra.
There's not much untouched nature, and there are rules against sleeping out in the open because of bears.
But if you walk 10 minutes off the you can do whatever you like. No one will bother you because everyone else stays to the roads.

I know my country will rank pretty low as it is heavily urbanised and is very small. You can hike through our biggest national wildlife park in 1 day basically.

However, I still love going /out/ here over any other place on earth. Why? The flatness of it. See pic related. You can see everywhere around you; no mountains, hills or whatsoever. Its beautiful imo in its own way.

The tatras are beautiful and an underrated range- I know the Slovak side doesn't have the best tourism advertising , though it's busier than wall street in some places, however as an Anglo I feel privy to it because most tourists are German, Polish, Slovak, Czech etc. So it's like I'm in a secret club and I think the Carpathians are amazing in general as a Euroboo

Yeah, no. Scotland is a great country but not entirely for /out/. Scenery wise and for fishing it's top tier, but Scotland's big game hunting game is weak as all fuck. All the deer populations are heavily managed on private estate land, there really isn't any available "wild" deer hunting, and you can't even hold your own rifle until the moment you take the shot, then you immediately hand it right back to the guide. It's bullshit tbqh.

Just go hunting in New Scotland, it's much better.

Nowhere on earth compares to NZ for hunting. That's an unfair comparison.
>>
>>968868
The openness of New Zealand's hunting regulations for invasive/introduced species is awesome and the landscape is equally amazing, it's at the top of my bucket list, specifically for red deer, but for sheer diversity of biomes and game North America is the best hunting place. Africa would be up there but one only has to choose from overpriced guided hunts or AIDS and malaria.

In my humble opinion, the different landscapes of France are surprisingly various.

Northern Finland is pretty good, just keep away from Levi. I'd say Enontekiö is pretty neat.

I'm curious about the terrain there. A friend and I are considering to go hiking in the area around northern Norway/Finland but we might take the Kungsleden in Sweeden instead. How would you descripe the area? Are there mountains? are there forests or is it mosly shrubby tundra?

Nice triples.
There are a couple of fjells and a shitload of forests. A couple of stones too if you look hard enough. Pretty good if you don't let the bugs bug you.
>>
>>969888
Forests are kind of midget-scale, not like Iceland but short in height.

The picture of >969906 kind of sums it up.

Yes, you need permission of landowner. Which is pretty much impossible. Most of the best nature is so called "Protected Area", where it's illegal to build a tent. You may sleep in bag, but only for short period of time (one or two days). It's illegal to start ANY kind of fire anywhere.

If that's actually true that can suck a fat dick.

I swear it's so damn hard to find even a square kilometers worth of forest without a road going through it or a small neighborhood lying right next to it. I might add that there is a nature reserve very close to me which has one of Sweden's biggest forests, but can't /out/ there for obvious reasons.

Stalking deer isn't really big game anyway though is it?

I don't know what you've been reading but in my experience, working and shooting on Scottish estates the only pieces of correct information you have there are that deer populations are managed and that shooting occurs on private estates whom you pay for the privilege of shooting on their land.

Here, there general rule is that the more trusted you become, the less hands on the stalker that a companies you will be up to the point where he'Lloyd eventually just be walking along with you not doing anything other than making sure you don't get lost. Two sides to every coin Anon.

Pretty sure it's not as complicated as you think.
Sure, landowners can make whatever rules they want, but they don't own the water itself, so I've heard you can just wade up to your knees in the loch to fish, and thumb your nose at the landowner when he comes out to shout at you.
>>
>>972281
People separate from the landowners own the water most of the time

Deer is considered big game in North America, and definitely the large red deer (similar to our elk) that are found throughout Scotland. I don't want to have to hunt the same estate for years in order to build up enough trust to "just" be escorted around the place. Hunting in the UK is very different than in North America, except for upland, that's pretty much identical.

You really shouldn't eat bats, the meat can even cause some very strange neurological diseases, but I shoot them because I'm a taxidermist and I can either prepare a museum specimen or mount it and sell them. Plus it can't hurt the local rabies problem which is reaching very serious levels in my area.

Pretty much everywhere up North. I live in the southern part of Sweden and I'll hopefully visit Kungsleden and Sarek this summer. Sweden has such a ridiculous amount of untouched land when you go further up north past Stockholm and just the right amount of mountains, Norway is a bit too steep for my taste. I'll hopefully climb Kebnekaise too as soon as I stop being a lazy cunt and whip my ass in shape.
>>
>>972466
That pic looks beautiful, can you carry bear spray in Sweden's wilderness?
>>
>>972483
Yes, but only if it's certified halal. No need though, a Swedish bear will only attack if Allah wills it.
>>
>>972483
You're not going to run into any bears in Sweden, at most you'll find some deer. But I don't really know what it looks like up further north.

After a quick research seems like there's up to 3500 bears in Swedistan, so I would say you may be able to find some.

You stupid fuck, you live in one of the richest countries in Europe and have very neat and big wilderness places to visit just few hundreds kilometers away. I was kayaking in central Sweden last year (lake Revsundssjon and thereabouts). At one trail I had been dropped after driving about 70km through forest and has about 30-50km of river without a living soul on trail. And you can camp literally anywhere in Sweden, it's /out/ heaven you little scrawny cunt. Stop bitching and just go /out/.

Oh, yeah one more thing since spring and then summer is coming. You have something like 22hours day, which is one more neat thing on top of what have been said.
