The crawfish boils are always good. I stay away from the parades because I used to live downtown and it was old after the first year (I'm not one for crowds.) I always say I wish I had taken up fishing because that's about the only consistent /out/ hobby one can have around here. I keep looking into it, but I haven't gotten into it yet. I went along fishing when I was a little kid but not since then. Yeah, Perdido is a great area. If I make a day at the beach I go over the pass to that nice stretch of beach that goes down toward the Flora-Bama. Or I'll head in the opposite direction to the west end of the island by the lagoon where it's just houses and no condos.

Yeah. I'm always talking about the DeSoto NF, Black Creek Ranger District on here. 640,000 acres. It stretches from Camp Shelby almost all the way to the coast. The main "creek" is small river sized. There is the 26 mile Black Creek Trail that passes through some of the best parts. There is a 9 mile trail closer to the coast, but I've never walked it.

You can camp pretty much anywhere you want, as long as you don't stay in one spot over 2 weeks. There is a canoe/kayak rental place in Brooklyn MS that covers up to 3 day floats. No one can own the sandbars, so you know you can camp on these without checking the map for private land. If you want less primative camping, there is a rec area by Ashe Lake that has water, grills, bathrooms etc. There's a $4/day fee there, but no FS personal on site, so I doubt anybody pays unless the Rec Officer or LEO shows up. There is a crappy public shooting range too. It used to have a fee and steel honor box, but folks shot it to death.

There are a couple dozen state parks, but they've gotten fee heavy. I sneak in. If they bother me I tell them to add it to my taxes. They either leave me alone or I leave. Use fees are bullshit if you pay taxes.

Southern France near the Mediterranean sea, in Languedoc-Roussillon pic related.
It's a nice region to go /out/ all things considered. The coast is crowded as expected from the Mediterranean especially during summer, but the Pyrenees are nearby, as well as lesser mountain range know as the Corbières which is devoid of tourists. There are also the foothills of the Massif Central, another range unknown to foreigners. It isn't as high as the Pyrenees or the Alps but it's rugged and forested with nice Mediterannean climate influence in some parts, including the Cévennes National Park. It also has the least densily populated place of all France, the Lozère, full of plateaux and river gorges it's a very nice place to go /out/ for Western Europe standarts.

I've never been in Headwaters, but I've been camping in Porcupine Lake Wilderness which was very secluded and remote. It depends, it's forbidden in several places such as natural reserves, beaches and "sites classés" (which are protected natural or man made areas). Some of these places are beautiful but very touristy so camping isn't great anyway, others are more secluded so it's worth it.
Camping in national parks is ok as far as I know since they aren't the same categories as the places I mentionned above.
But anyway I've camped in forbidden places many times and never had any problems. Except in national parks where camping is authorized we don't really have people like park rangers who tour the place to ensure the law is applied, unless you camp right next to a road you'll be fine. I've also camped on beaches, you just gotta know where the hidden ones are and no one will bother you, just don't set camp in the middle of a beach in Nice during tourist season obviously
As most of Western Europe it's never really far from civilization like you'd be in the middle of Montana, but it's still easily possible to spend some days /out/ without being bothered

I agree. There's some decent public land in Alabama but none worth making a trip to and the closer places charge too much for just primitive camping (like one place charges $10 a night with a two person minimum so it's $20 bucks for a bare patch of grass to pitch a tent on).

Is that nine mile trail the one that goes toward some POW camp and train tracks? I can't think of the name of it, but it's fairly close to the coast. I've thought about checking it out

>>
>>959578
I was wrong. It's 5.3 miles long, not 9. Here a link that has the other trails too.

The one you are talking about may be the one in the Chickasawhay Ranger District. I know there is an old WPA work camp on that district. That district blows compared to Black Creek.

Shit. Sorry. I actually slowed down long enough to read. Yeah. Something about POWs there.

>>
>>959699
There's a trail that leads to the campground and lake, that's what I was thinking of, but that's it, Tuxachanie. The part of the trail I'm thinking of follows an old railroad used by loggers and passes by what keeps coming up online as a WWII prison camp.

I saw Black Creek has a 42 mile trail. How is it? Have you done it before? How's the camping in that area?

>>
>>959710
Last time I hiked it was several years ago. It was only 26 miles then. It looks like they've added more and broken it up in different parts. That's awsome.

The prettiest part with the oldest growth goes through what they call the Black Creek Wilderness.

I've been playing in these woods since I was a kid. I also worked there during my FS internship. There are ALOT of cool places to camp. You just have to explore.

A topo map helps alot. If you see a small Hill that rises up 30ft in the middle of the floodplain, chances are it's been used as a cool campsite long before white people came.

These days, I camp on sandbars or a few other sites accessible only from the creek.

If you want a real adventure, you can put a kayak or canoe in at Brooklyn, then float till Black Creek hits the Leaf River. The Leaf River hits the Pascagoula River, which flows into Pascagoula Bay, which goes under Hwy 90 (where your car is parked), and you're almost home.

I've always wanted to do this. My uncle did it in 7 days in the late 70s. The main thing I remember him telling me is what a trip it was as you feel smaller and smaller with each step of the voyage. When you reach the ocean, your insignificance is complete, and your sense of accomplishment as well. I still have all the quadrangle maps for the trip.

I hear that. Doing some backpacking in a few weeks way up north - come hell or high water. Also, looking to set up a Wisconsin River trip.
