chickakoo is nice. I go fishing there sometimes. forestry trunk area is optimal for me. But a bit far for every day. You could head west 2 hours and go visit mors korchanski in edson. Then there's some nice areas as well up by whitecourt. There's a nice trout lake called east pit lake near chickakoo which is also a preserve and would make a good walk. kind of more prairie brush out there though.
Inside the city you might like mill creek ravine. I'd stay out of the main river valley though because you never know when there's natives lurking to mug you. Happened to two people I know now although they are kind of walking targets.

The DeSoto is nice. It's huge, and most people around here never leave the public campsites, so once you leave the parking lot you've basically got the whole thing to yourself. Canoeing on the Okatoma is fun but it's usually pretty crowded in summer. My favorite thing is hanging out at Red Bluff. It's nice to look at something that isn't just another pine forest, you know?

There's little cliques of hardcore folks around. I used to hunt ALOT on Black Creek and Desoto. Still float and camp there when deer dog season is over. Summers, I usually do my out stuff on the coast.

I think most of the outists here have their own little 40 acres to play around on by the time they're 40. But, yeah, probably 75% of the folks that go out do it as hunters, fishers or both.

Seriously? Whenever I rode my bike there from Corvallis it seemed so busy and touristy, at least compared to the coast range.

Now Alsea and Deadwood are nice places to visit. No people, no culture, no nothing. Just a handful of buildings and maybe a chance to get some fresh water before returning to the bush.
