>>

>mfw I'll never kayak in such a beautiful location

all the rivers and shit in australia are brown as fuck.
>>
>>954867

come over to NZ mate, far superior /out/ings than aus and we all know it
>>
>>954867
Sorry to hear that bro. My dream is to Kayak in Alaska. One day brother....one day
>>
>>954875
>far superior /out/ings than aus
I have no doubt about that
I honestly wish I lived in NZ just for the /out/-related shit.
Your hunting and fishing looks so amazing and your nature isn't monotonous like ours.
My brother and I often speak about going there for a 2 week hunting trip
>>954876
I love the untouchedness of Alaska and the Yukon
>>
>>954861
>Is there anything more peaceful than kayaking over a provincial landmark overflowing with normies and tourists?
Memes aside do you guys prefer ocean or lake kayaking for tranquility?
>>
>>954897
not sure about kayaking, but I can say that I tried paddleboarding at a beach recently and it was fucking brilliant.
I think it all comes down to the location obviously. Some beaches are better than others. Some lakes are better than others.

It's still Winter here - no kayaking for us 'till late March.

Have a recycled pic from this past summer.
>>
>>954905
That almost looks like one of the great lakes.
>>
>>954911
Nope, it's Barnegat Bay.
>>
>>954905
is it rough to kayak in the ocean?
>>
>>954924
Barnegat bay is connected to the ocean but it's not the ocean. The bay can be choppy sometimes and it's always windy, but I kayak for fitness so I enjoy the challenge. If you have/buy an ocean kayak it'll be built to cut through the water easily.

We (doggo and I) launch into Oyster Creek, which flows into the bay - meaning when I'm ready to go home I have to paddle upstream. Are you a first-time 'yakker? If so I'd recommend staying close to your launch point until you build up your muscles. Should take less than a season to get to the point where you can go out into rougher waters.
>>
>>954897
Ocean if I want a workout, lake if I want some quiet time
>>
>>954932
>Are you a first-time 'yakker?
No, never tried. I just happen to live by the ocean and never saw anyone kayaking there. I wouldn't mind trying but how do you get past the waves? Do you enter the waters like surfers do?
>>
File: kayak illustration.jpg (31KB, 944x420px) Image search: [Google]

31KB, 944x420px
>>954947
>how do you get past the waves? Do you enter the waters like surfers do?

I'm fortunate enough to have a public boat ramp around the block from me, so I enter the water by putting the kayak in, walking it into the water so that the water comes up to my knee, then climb in. If for some reason you're grounded once you sit in the kayak you can detatch your oars, flip them so that the paddles are facing upward, dig the pole-ends into the ground and pull - thrusting you and the 'yak forward and into deeper water.

For the waves, I face them head-on so that the wave and my kayak form a 'T'. If you let the waves hit your kayak broadside it'll rock you and if it's a big wave it may tip you. Facing it head-on makes it more like a roller-coaster.
>>
>>954924
I highly recommend planning your trips with the tides Trying to get home when the tide is going out can be a bitch, especially if there are rips. In 15 seconds you'll end up where you were 15 minutes ago.
>>

General question. I am on the market for a kayak; what's is your preference /out/, sit on top or sit in kayaks?
>>
>>955029
>>954905
>>954932
>>954965
Me again. I prefer sit-on-tops but again - I'm out in the bay. Generally speaking, sea-faring (ocean) kayaks tend to be sit-on-tops and river kayaks tend to be sit-ins. Also with a sit-in you need to learn how to roll yourself back over.
>>
>>955031
What would you recommend for a first kayak for ocean/sea use?any dangers with second hand sit on top kayaks? Euro here so no US only pls.

Anyone in Virginia do whitewater? I'm just getting into it and have been planning on going to Mather's Gorge soon.
>>
>>955301
Any sit-on-top will do for ocean use - mine is 4.11 meters long and I constantly see 3 meter kayaks out on the bay. How big are you? If you're small I'd say to go for a 3 meter 'yak, if you're average or big I'd recommend 3.5-4 meters. If you go smaller or bigger that's OK. The major important thing is that it's sit-on-top.

>any dangers with second hand sit on top kayaks?
Absolutely not! Buying used is a great way to start - who wants to drop a grand or more on a sport they might not even like? Just make sure you can see detailed pics or the actual 'yak before you hand over your cash. Make sure there are no holes other than the bilge holes, but otherwise I highly recommend buying used for any first-timer.

Oh, one more thing - and this is a must - you absolutely have to post back here with pics of your first time out!

>>

That boat would probably be good, but remember if you're carrying your rucksack, it will have to be stored under the seats or the bow/stern. If it does not bother you to stuff your pack in and dig it out every time you get in and out of the boat, then that should be a fine canoe for someone who is starting out.

No, no, no, noooooooooo.

What are you, 13? If not then get a job, work for a mere 30-40 hours, and use that money to buy a real boat like a canoe. Inflatable boats are a total absolute and utter waste of money and time. Don't half-ass this.

Do, at least until you build your confidence, but then do not ONLY if you are in familiar waters.
>>
Do sleeper yaks or paddlers exist? I tried looking for one but all I found was that $84,000 WiTHiN thing. I just thought it would be cooler than bringing a tent and landing for the night. Anything that could be modified to accommodate overnight stays would also be appreciated.

>Inb4 WiTHiN
>>
>>960005
I use one as a back pad. When I'm lounging. If you are not a strong swimmer I guess it makes sense but I don't know how you can be over the age of 13, have acess to kayaking, and not good at swimming.
>>
>>954901
i don't get paddleboarding. you feel like you could fall at any time, can't go fast, have to stand the whole time, can't store anything on the board
>>
I live in vermont and its just getting warm enough to start venturing out into lake Champlain again soon. I only have my shitty recreational kayaks with me currently (literally dicks sporting goods tier) but I'm also thinking about doing some river kayaking around the state if I can find good spots. Anything I should look out for or be aware of for venturing out with rec kayaks? theyre definitely not the best kayaks ive used but they were cheap and they're what ive got for now
>>
>>958277
This, sit on tops are fucking dogshit if you're not fishing.
>>
>>960497
They don't exist. Closest would be getting a big fucking canoe and sleeping under that, but it would still be far worse than a tent or hammock.
>>
Not a kayaker, but I do go on a couple of week long rafting trips every year. Nothing makes you feel more free and at peace with the world than a river.
>>
>>960526

>getting scared
>the powerful current is somehow coming from all directions
>can see land a few metres away but can not paddle out of this spot

>>
>>963036

also lifejacket recommendations for a big guy, the more floatier the better.
>>
>>963109
Any type III pfd will work, just make sure it has at least 15lbs of buoyancy. If you are already so fat that mobility and space in the kayak are limited you might want to look into a type 5 inflatable, it's not as safe, affordable, or user friendly, but it keeps a low profile unless you need it.
>>
>>963036
Go on as few easy, guided kayak trips first. Good way to learn the basics and have someone who's more experienced around to just in case.
>>
>>958997
Don't listen to the other limp dicked idiots. An inflatable can do the job no problem for like 95% of situations.

Not everybody drive F-150s or whatever the fuck. Some of us live in tue civilization.
>>
>>962824
ive hear people say this. i do more kayaking than the average bear and wit the exception of exploring a cave i cant think of one time where i ran the risk of being knocked unconscious just regular old paddling.

white water absolutely wear a pfd. wicked rough ocean day, either skip the day or wear a pfd. but if your on a lake or a river--- the only realistic way you are going unconscious is falling asleep while loungin out. in which case if you tip-- you are gunna wake righ the fuck up.
>>
>>963109
