When you go /out/ do you prefer a simple analog watch or a digital watch with a lot of features (stopwatch, barometer, etc.)
Also watch general, this is my every day beater. Going to put a leather strap on it soon.
Simple analog. I was thinking about dyeing the straps black since the green has faded.
>>950039
Analog watch, NATO strap. A rotating bezel is all the stopwatch I need for /out/ stuff.
>>950039
I like a hybrid analog digital watch. I prefer the aesthetics of the analog and the ability to tell direction (you can do this with digital too) in an emergency. The only feature I really like on digital watches is an alarm. I tend to sleep in when camping & that limits what I can do in the day. Also I can set the alarm for legal hunting hours. I wish analog watches came with an alarm. If they did that's what I'd wear.

I like the look, how does it move ?

It's called using the sun you stupid spastic... Or are you too stupid to even know how to do that.
Oh yes, by all means, use a lazy technological method, destroying the environment. You might as well stay at home, silly spastic.
Love this watch so much. Don't know why but I'm kinda looking for something "better" no rational reason.
Maybe the gaming tactic line? Anyone have en experience with that? Or the suunto?

do you wear your watch while sleeping?
when out i sleep with it on, except if im in my hammock cause it tends to just slightly hook unto the edge adn the resitance wakes me up.
but if im on the ground under my tarp or in a tent i sleep with it on when /out/ so when i wake up i can check the time
but when im home it is just so irritating to sleep with on? what makes this difference? why do i not feel it at all when sleeping /out/ is it just because ive already rationalized its utility but at home its just easier to look at my wall clokc from bed instead of squinting to read my watch?
>>950187
>is it just because ive already rationalized its utility but at home its just easier to look at my wall clokc from bed instead of squinting to read my watch?
Thats how it works for me. Always on the wrist when innawoods. Pretty much take it off the second I get home.
Always analog for out. Can be used to find north along with the sun.
Only time I'm wearing a digital is when running or during other workouts where I might need a stop watch.

I'd like to share my views as a seafarer. I spent 2 years at sea and relied on my watch as a tool.
My watch needed to be reliable. It had to be waterproof because sometimes watches end up inside a washing machine or in the rain if I'm on shore leave and I can't replace it easily.
Because we kept moving through time zones, when the ship's slave clocks were being adjusted, sometimes there would be errors. So I needed a watch to use as a reference point. Quartz watches are better for this.
I also like having dual time, not just for calling home, but also for roughly estimating my longitude and thus location for tuning into shortwave radio stations in my free time.
For these reasons I favoured digital watches, specifically the Casio W-71. Rubber straps tend to disintegrate, so I prefer metal straps.
However some seafarers who spend years at sea, much longer than me, tend to prefer automatic watches, because they never have to worry about batteries. Getting batteries or watches replaced when you are at sea can be hard.

Yeah, the 5600 is based. Mine has lasted 4 years + of infantry abuse and is still going.
I find the backlight is essential, no luminous hands or anything like that I've ever seen is so quick and easy to read. Some condensation seems to be getting into mine of cold days, I can't really fault it after it's taken so much abuse for years, it was not an expensive watch. I'll get another one soon.

This is my daily /out/ watch. Water resistant enough to hold up in the rain and has a light. I don't know how you analog guys manage without a light.
>>954230
Timex has arguably the best backlight of any watch made and make a ton of decent analog watches.
I think they've got a really good patent on the indiglo backlighting otherwise someone surely by now would have copied it. Someone on an /fa/ watch thread said it was because it requires a larger 3v battery instead of a normal 1.5v battery. I call bullshit because if timex can do it, other companies can do it too.
>>953988
analog is better for this specific reason

>not using 24h

>>954234
You can do that with anything as long as you know the right time so a digital will work too,
I fell for the ABC and (T) meme. I got a Casio PRW 3500 on eBay for $140 shipped and it's a retarded watch. I live in Colorado so the barometer and altimeter are completely fucking useless.
I want to sell, but I'll take a hit after eBay/paypal fees and shipping. I've only worn the dumb thing once to work in the office.
I also have a G Shock 5600 which is really nice. I want the atomic version, but $100 is just too much for.
>>954260
You realize you have to set the altimeter every once and awhile, right?
>>954272
Yes and that when the pressure changes so does the altitude. It's not a very useful device if i need to carry my GPS with me to calibrate the altimeter to get an accurate barometer reading.
This dumb watch is essentially the same price as a foretrex 401. The 401 will give you altitude and compass while also doing shit like recording your track and saving waypoints. The Protrek is a gimmick.
>>954275
I've had nothing but a good time with my PRG-270. The compass is accurate and easy to set, the barometer is useful for warning you of sudden rain, the altimeter is accurate as long as you keep it zeroed, the water resistance is good, and I never have to charge it.
>>954279
The compass is nice on it, the atomic time keeping is nice, solar charging is nice. The altimeter and barometer are garbage because unless I'm standing in one place, my pressure is always changing because I'm hiking in the rocky mountains.
My Garmin 62s has a compass and an altimeter that works. I was hoping I could start leaving that at home.
>>950039
I used to have a timex ironman. When I went surfing in hawaii it got salt in there and the LCD was fucked up. So I went to a drug store and bought the cheapest casio digital watch for like $10. We're a good 5 years later and it's still working fine. I meant to replace it when it broke. I fish constantly as well so it sees some action. I have gotten some shit during job interviews over it and at any expensive store they immediately disregard me as a potential customer when they see it but it has earned its place.
Got a speedmaster professional, and a casio g shcok. Think it's pretty obvious what I use for /out/
>>952978
or you can carry a flipping compass or three.
Even a cheap compass on a watch band is better.
>>954284
Barometer on a watch is good for me when I sail. It's clued me in to trouble coming a few times.
>>954542
I'm sure it's great because your altitude never changes.
NATO finally came through :)
>>954702
Are you fuckin serious? I was looking into solar watches because they seem better for me than automatics that die after a couple days. But holy shit I can't buy a watch that is a brick after 10 years.
>>954703
best bet for long term is regular watches and stock up on batteries - diver watches are made to last
>>954702
I am aware of that.
>>954708
Batteries don't last forever, and if its not user replaceable, then I assume you have to take it to a watchmaker to do it.

Same watch. Kind of cool little thing. For $15, it's a nice bit of nostalgia.
>>950039
This is my outdoor watch.
After one year of wearing it in the sand, sea, snow - the watch is super duper water tight and the compass really amazes me. Payed 45$, I'll only have to replace the battery soon because I use it every day for the alarm, the stopwatch, the timer and more times during the day for the thermometer and sometimes for the compass.
>>950039

I can vouch for the DW5600e. Mine has been in the mud, skiing, and swimming in the gulf. At $47 dollars you don't really care if you lose the thing.
Its got an alarm, timer, stopwatch and backlight. If you don't use the light or alarm very often the batter will last a very long time.
