What knife is best to buy for a bushkeker who does hardcore batonny?

I've been looking for a thick knife like a rigging knife I can give my bf for his b-day. Do I need to buy him a good hammer too? Does wood come pre-cut or should I get a saw and if I do, should it be only the saw blade so he can whittle a handle for it like a bow saw? I don't want to get him something whimpy that will break the instant he uses it. Double points if it comes with a beard comb.

What batonny knife do you use, /out/?
>>
hacking knife, ~12 dollars, designed to be hit with a hammer

>rigging knife

Why is this coming up in wood splitting threads frequently?

Karambit is best.
>>
>>947673

I'm not a big advocate of batoning knives and I'm not going to support that conversation further. I'm just saying there are things like froes which are designed to function in that area.

>>947675
If someone can come up with a good reason to use a karambit, I'd love to hear it. Even as a weapon, a hooky blade seems like it would get caught up in things and be fucked.
>>
>>947681
Karambits are for skinning/gutting when hunting. Only kids and tacticools think it is for a weapon.
>>
>>947684

I'd rather a wide belly knife for skinning and hunting. Karambits are marketed largely as weapons with big thump loops, so I wouldn't imply that's not a common reason they're marketed.
>>
>>947688
You think anyone wouldn't sell it to whatever demographic wants to buy it? I can't help that retards think they are rambo and pay more money than hunters for shitty tools.
>>

>>
Becker BKII, of course.
>>
>>947691

I mostly get amused when the name calling starts.

There's clearly a market for karambits. I'm saying they are shitty for most tasks versus wide belly knives and if anyone disagrees, that's just fine. We can share our opinions and not be dicks about it.

>>947684
when I go out for my bushcrafting/hunting trips in the forest I often times use my karambit for both battonning and skinning/gutting. I find it does an excellent job of penetrating the animal so you can easily cut up the stomach. The curve does a great job of retaining the edge of the blade so you can really battonn the wood well. I think many people have trouble with battonning wood because they'd don't have a sharp enough knife.
>>
>>947675
>>947681

Karambits are like the idiot savant of the knife world. They aren't really useful for much, but what they do they do very well.

I see them more as a general utility knife really. They're great for cutting rope, opening/slicing boxes, scribing lines on wood, and light pruning. I've had a couple cheapy chinesium jobbies that actually held up to the above quite well.
>>
>>948018
>aren't USEful for much
>more a general UTILity knife
Admit it anon, you love your Karambit. And why wouldn't you? They are very practical and the only thing I can see wrong with them is that /out/ idiots don't like them. So what if you'll catch some heat if you post a picture on this board?

I see them as the chubby chicks of the knife world. Super easy going, fun, all around awesome- just for some reason no one wants other people to know they're into them.

Sir I do believe you have created a halbert, rather than an axe. Hald-berd comes from old german which means "pole" and "axe" respectively. Even without the linguistic cues, one could easily deduce that this IS in fact a haldbert due to the spike atop of the weapon, as well as the excessively long handle which is intended for battle rather than for woodworking, which would have been quite apparent to the average middle ages european.
>>
Never baton or use a hatchet when it's cold.
warm it up under your sweater or hold it over the fire for a few seconds. You would be suprised how much of an impact the low temp takes on the steel.

Not sure if you are just doing a meme or not... but just in case you aren't:

Still pretty stupid... If you are out in the woods and plan to be there long enough to need a fire, you should have a ax or large enough knife for batoning.

If you happen to actually be in a "survival situation" and some how have a innawoods knife but not you normal stuff, you baton smaller things your knife can handle, not freaking logs.

I have no experience with it, but I've seen mixed reviews, and it seems for the money you can do better. I really like the look and materials, but I question parts of the design, like how they went with a hollow grind, have no back lanyard hole, and the handle looks slippery.

/out/ noob here. I dont understand the controversy here. Is there any benefit to battoning wood? Is it to save space by not having to pack an axe/hatched or is it just a personal prefferance.
>>
>>947635
Oh look, even with batonning these morons used the knife wrong. Logs are too thick, for the full tang knifes and the rat tails broke at the handle which typically happens because that's what happens with those kinds of knives in that situation. Whoever did that obviously had no clue what they were doing. And OP is a pompous ass for being a moron because he doesn't like things.
>>
>>956341
Typically it's just preference. I alternate between my camp axe and my bk7. Just really for what I feel like doing that day. Hell, I may take my camp axe, my folding saw, my BK7 and my mora for the overkill and the lack of needing any tools at all. That can be a bit heavy so I don't do it often. But it's kind of fun once I hunker down at the camp site.
>>
>>956352
Oh and I also bring a folding shovel. Because I like it and it makes dumping sand on the fire easier.

The main debate is between those who enjoy the outdoors, practical activities and have a pragmatic approach to the challenges they may face, and the bush-cucks and BATONNY CHOPPY CHOPPY. Pick up dry wood off the ground and make a simple camp fire? NOPE Bush-cucks like their wood nice n' green. That way the fire is even harder to start. But that wood ain't small enough for me to practice feather sticks an' my sparkly stick so it's time to BATONNY CHOPPY CHOPPY. I LOVE BAATONNYYY AND KNIFE DESTRUCTION.

he may be asspie and goes /out/ forever alone, then gets legitimately mad when he hears that people don't camp his way. This guy is actually MAD about consequence that don't pertain to him at all and he goes on multiple threads trolling people about batoning. This asshole would get made if you didn't start a fire with gasoline and a road flare cause it's efficient.

Batoning doesn't have to kill your knife, just don't baton thick ass wood logs or knots, and don't beat on it like a gorilla or hit the knife on an angle. sometimes dead fall is too wet to burn so you need to open it up to get the dry wood inside. you don't need to baton all your wood, but getting some dry kindling helps though.

>this pic triggers the asspie chippy chop faggot
>>
>>956377
Why take anything, nature will provide everything that is needed while /out/. Who needs a hatchet, or a knife, or a saw...just forage long enough and you'll find what you are looking for.

I want to let you know that I start every fire I make whether it be in the backyard, the fireplace, or out camping with a sparkly stick...just remember that and let it eat away at you.

What's more plausible anon?
A: The angle at which he hits his knife with a log to split a bigger log is off by a little. This slight angle at which he is 'incorrectly' hitting it is the reason why the knife failed. All would have been FINE if he had maintained exactly perpendicular blows. Never mind the fact that the knife was lodged in the log and he was applying force to a part of the knife sticking out, applying greater torque. Never mind that there wasn't much angle to hit the knife except for this "angle". Bear in mind that an axe or maul could have done split this in a single swing.

B: He's fucking hitting a knife into a log with another log.

How about batonny chop chop is stupid bullshit? How about, despite numerous pictures and videos posted in this thread alone showing broken knives because of this bullshit, you batonny bush-cuck faggots insist on memeing this shit.

>>958902

>>
>>960781
No. It's not a personal preference, it's fucking logic. You look at this fuckwit banging on his knife and breaking it in half and you say
>"Oh man, he musta been hitting it the wrong way"
When I say the knife broke because he's banging on it, you try to correct me.

It's like the guy took poison and died. You look at it and say "he took the poison wrong, you can see it's in the way he swallows too fast there". I say, no the idiot took poison, that's why he died. And then you get all defensive and full of shit.
>>
>>960781
Besides, bang on knives all you want. IDGAF. Just don't come on this board and try to defend it. This post.
Right here.
/thread/
A knife is a tool. Many critics of battony have been taught that carrying a knife is a privilege. We were taught proper handling, knife etiquette, and held to safety standards.
We were told that willful neglect of the rules could result in breakage, injury to self, and loss of blade privileges. The worst failure was injury to another caused by throwing or projectiles from broken equipment or other objects. At each infraction we'd lose a corner of our card. At the fourth infraction, we'd be bladeless little pansy pants who have been found irresponsible.

Seeing all the defense of this choppy choppy is painful on multiple levels.
1. Injuries from poor safety habits will result in nanny state regulations that will fuck me and my ability to carry a blade.
2. The blade is a sacred tool, and seeing the pleeb level autism choppy choppy knife abuse turns the stomach.
3. This is a telling symptom of a generation of fatherless males looking for a way to be something they never had a chance at. That is just plain sad.

If you faggots are looking for a role model, join the Marine Corps or the French Foreign Legion. Or just look to me, do what I say, and stop fucking up 3200 years of tradition.

Knives made with modern steel and a proper heat treat should have no problem batonning in my opinion. That being said I think you are stupid if you baton something that is 90% as wide as the blade of the knife you are using. I would personally never baton anything over 3 inches in diameter. I feel like batonning is a much safer method of making kindling than using an axe, especially if you are tired and in low light. Do you ever wonder if some of these pictures of broken knives could just be from the fact that they were defective in someway? Maybe a bad heat treat or some defect in the grain of the steel? I have seen a solid steel hammer break in half right at the neck after a couple years on the job, while other hammers have have been on the job for 10+ years and have endured 10x the abuse without ever failing. Even if you have a 99% success rate, when you are making hundreds of thousands or millions of an item, you will come across one that is defective.

What you're arguing is CAN you batonny chopp choppy chop, and I say yes. With a high quality knife, and a little thought put into it, you can split some bits of wood with a knife and shouldn't expect it to break.

What we're arguing is SHOULD you batonnie chippy choppy. Making kindling is pretty fucking lame as a reason. I find an axe of a manageable weight or a hatchet is way better because of the wedge shape, for any reasonable need to cut wood. I never make kindling because if I'm in the forest, I'm surrounded by bits of wood of all different sizes and I can just find shit that works. Blah blah it's raining, whatever, learn to build a better fire. Learn to find better wood.

Bippy chippy a dying meme. Batonnia chuppy cuppy is a drunk survivalist idea that was put into a TV show or some lame book to fill space. It got picked up on by fatherless bush-cucks with yootoob channels and perpetuated to memeic status. Does it work some of the time? Yes. Does that mean you should do it? No.These idiots put their knives under undue stress, and eventually will fatigue the metal. I don't fucking care if you guys do. By all means, masturbation is another pointless and self gratifying activity. Just don't come onto this board and try to convince people that it's a legitimate woodsman activity.

Why does batoning make people so mad? Chill out before you get a heart attack, dude.
>>
>>947635
If bait, sigh.

If not, that's a loaded question. I used to be huge into camp knives, choppers, big knives, etc. Then I took my Boker Vox Rold, Becker BK9, and Fiskars X7 hatchet /out/. The Boker and Becker have stayed in my closet ever since. The thing about batoning is that for a knife to be really effective at it, you often have to sacrifice performance in other tasks or go way up in price. A froe is purpose built for batoning, so is a skrama. Here is the best answer I can give you from my experience.

A good 4-6" blade can handle simple batoning chores and still function as a general purpose knife. You want a scandi or full flat grind. Try to baton knot-free wood that is at least an inch less in diameter than the length of your knife. If you're trying to split anything bigger than 3-4", just use a hatchet or axe. The Vox Rold (D2), BK series (1095) and Bark River knives (A2, S3V, etc) will perform well.

Take a look at some of the Dutch Bushcraft Knives videos for more ideas. Personally, I carry a folding saw, hatchet, and a Mora and don't try to baton with a knife anymore.

>Not me either
That's a loaded question though, isn't it? You see, I know that in your head there is NO justification for batonning. And even if I did come up with some superbly sound logic on it you wouldn't see it as a good enough reason. There is no point in any argument. It's just preference. It's something you don't like and you feel superior because you don't do it. That doesn't make you right and it doesn't make you wrong. So therefore I won't answer your question. Not because I don't have one, but because it wouldn't matter anyway and you'll hit me with another insult just because you can. There's no point.
>>
>>956377
This. Used to be in the CHOPPY CHOPPY camp. Too much pointless extra work. Main reasons to split wood for a campfire are
1. Burns better. This applies to pieces of dry wood that an axe or hatchet would split quicker and better. Even after a good rain, you can have dry wood by splitting a few pieces.
2. Easier to place. You can stack split pieces easier and safer than round ones, but this is a pretty minor concern if you know what you're doing.

Be me, be armyfag. It's winter, 3 AM, quite dark but snow adds a bit of light. No extra light allowed, and now it's after your guard duty, you've frozen your balls off lurking in the bush next to a road in the darkness, watching observantly for imaginary Russians to materialize and meet death from your assault rifle.

You want to get to sleep but next up is your fire watch, your holy mission is to keep the fire stove puffing. You can't sleep yet but being cold you want extra much to make the tent stay warm and livable for everyone in it. But guess what, the fire is about to die out and all the logs inside the pile in the tent are too big to fit the fire stove hole. What do you do? Do you rummage through the tent, spend time looking for an axe, hoping the fire won't die, then hack yourself in the ankle in the darkness, then scream medic? Or do you just go a bit further away from the tent and baton a few logs to smaller pieces with the knife you always have with you?

Of course you baton! Get it over with.

There are knives and there are knives. Shit tier knives likely break from this treatment. Others will prevail. Your knife is not shit tier. It's not expensive but it's hardened quality steel. So you baton it, get smaller logs, feed the stove and keep the fire going and at 4 AM the nextfag takes the turn and you can sleep for a few hours.

So, mfw almost 20 years later someone in an internet forum is fanatically and categorically denying the existence of batoning as a viable technique anywhere at all times, from now to eternity and all times past, just because people with shit tier knives and wrong technique manage to break their tools? That's just fucking rich.

End rant. Go /out now and if your axe breaks or you lose it, do not under ANY circumstances baton, since it is a mortal sin.
>>
>>961582
Every last little detail taken into account to make the perfect reason to batoony. Congratulations, you found a quasi plausible scenario in which it would make sense. Because we all need to feed small stoves in the middle of the night with no light, and the axe is nowhere to be found and good riddance it's dangerous to use one.

See? You can't come up with legit reasons to buhtonny.

If there was any legitimacy to it, you'd be able to easily point it out to me.

This guy posted a lengthy story >>961582 with a ton of constraints for this one time that batonning just SORT of made sense.

Even then I'd argue the axe should've been readily available, and that using the proper tool for the job is safer than batonny fuckery. But kudos to him for actually trying to legitimize this meme.

The point is you get so butthurt. If you make a point, it's not my job to just accept it. I'm gonna argue with you on shit that doesn't make sense.
>>
>>961652
>Even then I'd argue
My point exactly. Nothing is justifiable to you even if it is. So why attempt to prove it to you? You're so locked in to how right you are you won't even see what I'm trying to tell you. You see no justification because you don't like it yet you demand a justification for something you don't like because you don't like it and when it's presented you completely lose your mind and shoot it down. Why? Because you don't like it. You don't want a justification. You want an argument. and you want an argument that you're immersed in you would never say that it's a valid reason. You'd go "Maybe so, buuuuuut". Which you've already done. So again. There is no reason to justify it to you because you've convinced yourself that it's unjustified. It's circular logic and pointless.
>>
>>961652
And to add:
I'm not butt hurt, I'm confused. You went through a lot of trouble and argued with a lot of people to keep this thread going on a personal choice. And when people tell you it is you immediately attack their character. Batonning wood doesn't make me an autist, it means I made a choice on what to do with my tools that I paid for. This has no bearing on what you do or your time out. I haven't even asked you what you use while out. Why? Because I don't care. You do what you do and I'll do me. It's choices and preferences. It doesn't devalue me as a person for that. The only people who don't seem to like that are people like you. And just because people agree with you, doesn't make you right.

I'd prefer a saw with interchangeable blades.
There were some folding saws with aluminium handles which were able to fit normal saw blades from the hardware store, but they quickly disappeard because they were a one time seller.
Too practical for an industry which depends on marketing the same stuff in a different package for more money.

Having the ability to choose between all available saw blade types, from wood to metal and that at a hilariously low price is awesome.
30 bucks for a new blade you can't even resharpen? come on.

Pic is German dude who made these saws by himself for 25€, doesn't respond to orders anymore though.

Indeed. Batoning with a folding knife is the worst thing you can do with regard to the foolish act of batoning in the first place. The locking mechanism can fail or be broken very easily. When and if it fails the person using it can be greatly injured.
