Never a good sign. Cross outside fenced off vertical shaft.

Been into urbex for awhile and want to try exploring mines, looking for a gas detector for it, any advise? What kind of things do you have to look out for in mines/tunnels?
>>932712
I have never used a gas detector. That being said if I were to get one I would make sure it is MSHA approved.
>>932732
Toxic gas is my biggest concern when it comes to exploring confined areas, the idea of going into an area and passing out stops me from going into mines.
This is some cool shit
>>932712
>gas detector
They're expensive.
A decent tri- or quad-gas detector will run you well over $1k. (O2, H2S, LEL, CO).
The little disposable "canaries" are a little more affordable, anywhere from $100 to $250/ea. They're typically only one gas, and have a 2-yr life once activated.
I believe there are multi-gas disposable detectors, but for the money, you'd probably be better off just throwing a little more at it and getting something that won't sudoku in 2 years.
t.used to work in the oilfield
>>932772
Actual canaries are far cheaper.
>>932772
Sadly I'll have to forget about exploring mines in the near future unless there's another option, I'll just have to wait until I've got the money for a decent detector. I'm willing to take risks when it comes to exploring but this is the kind of thing that if you fuck up you won't be making it out.
>>932587
Dump all you've got
>>932712
You can get a good 4-gas meter on Amazon for $600 these days, but that's the cheapest you'll find. I've used the meter one model up from that one (by the same company) for gas monitoring at landfills. We've been very happy with it.
>>932872
I see gas meters for a lot less than that on ebay. There is currently one that's bid up to $76. Can't say how good they are, but still better than nothing.
>>932898
If they're damaged or way out of calibration, they might give you a false sense of security, which can be worse than nothing. I wouldn't buy one used unless it came with recent calibration paperwork from a licensed and reputable US lab.

get a canary
Every time I check up on the GOAT mine in BC, Carolin Mine, to see if it's abandoned again I find out that New Carolin Gold is growing more successful every month. Looks like it will be a much longer period of time until it's abandoned again than previously expected. Was fun while it lasted.

lots of gobbing in this mine
Main tunnel opened up where they mined out the ore vein.
the smooth right wall is the fault line the were following.
miners latrine.
>>933067
That is a very impressive stope. Do you have any other pics of that mine.
not surprised to see evidence of collapse since these mines were on or near fault lines.
ore chute leading up into a stope.
Shameless self bump I'll post more pics tonight.
This is honestly incredible
hinged door on an ore chute. we had never seen this done before.
a closer look at one of the hinges.
ore chute
this is usually a sign of an older mine 1860's to early 1900's. Raw wood gathered from the area, instead of milled wood.
old branches holding back rock.
this ladder led up into a stope that had a lot of collapse that sealed of this part of the level
winze leading up to large stope.
not 100% what this was. lighting system maybe.

Knob and tube wiring. Used between 1880 and 1930.
>>932772
The ones we have at work are solely for detecting Co2 for when people have to climb into empty wine tanks to empty them of the remaining oak bags and they are $1200 each alone.

If you're willing to skimp on cheap ass chinese tier devices that are supposed to save lives, then it shows how much you value your own life.

Thanks for posting this.
Lots of pics but I have to go to work now. If this thread is up at midnight I'll post some. I live on the west slope of sierras, lots of old mines here and in Nevada. Really cool hobby.
>>934294
I'm looking forward to them. The last mine i visited in Nevada was in White Pine county.
>left over mining equipment used to haul ore.

That is the last of the ready relief mine. i will post pics of the three mines we explored at the warlock mine group later.
First mine we found in the Warlock group
left my pack and walking stick to crawl in. Adit was in rough shape.
it opened up after about 10 feet or so.
>>935138
MOAR. As more as you can.
>>932587
Where? There are a lot in Barstow that we run into while riding dirt bikes. I've always wondered what's in them.
Awesome thread
There aren't any mines near me in shitty bongistan
>>935317
The green monster mine was in Arizona, The Ready Relief mine and Warlock group are around Julian. We have been to mines in Death Valley and the Mojave. Those were some really large mining operations.
>>935265
here you go more of the Warlock mine group.
>>934821
I live in the west slope of the Sierra, I've encountered numerous pieces of equipment with the Hendy trademark. It must have been some time, working in the Hendy foundry in SF in the Barbary Coast days, knowing your equipment was being hauled by mule teams to mines all over CA, NV, AZ, CO, and NM.
>>935329
Where abouts are you? There are quite a few about but you have to know where to look!
I have pics of one more of the Warlock mines if anyone is interested.
>>935462
Shit looks all spoopy and cool.
>>937998
Always.
