Looks like an old Estwing knife. Are you sure the handle is wood and not lacquered leather?
Estwing sold hatchet/knife combos back in the 80s.

see that's what I thought at first. The guard is brass (looks like it at least) and there are 4 thin strips of brass (2 on top, 2 on the bottom). The pommel isn't the traditional estwing style either. Yeah, it might be lacquered leather, it's very hard

Any stamps?
This pattern of knife was mass produced in the 30s 40s.
The navy mainly took them for cutting rope, the ones with the shiny finish were sold as hunting knives.
My model is made by PAL.
