I bought one of these just for the hell of it. Now it's the only one I carry.

Sadly this is true. I bought a Skeletool specifically for fishin but 95% of the time I just keep a little fixed blade on me and a smaller pair of needlenose pliers.

I bought one of those cheap Leatherman Revs for $25. Has everything I need really, I see no reason to get a nicer one. I'd be happy with just a sturdy knife, pliers and bottle opener. What else do you really need?
>>
I got a free Gerber from the army, gets used lightly. Really just the screwdriver, and saw. 99% of the time, a cheap folder will suffice.

Worthless post. You could have posted pic related and it wouldn't have made it any less retarded.

A Leatherman will serve you just fine for the 99% of times you are on the go and you need a knife or a pair of pliers. The fact that a Leatherman has a bit driver and file built into it makes it more useful than carrying separate pliers and a knife alone unless you knew the job at hand would only require pliers and a knife..

I like the Charge TTI. It's kind of pricy and it's basically a gauche version of the Wave but it is nice to use.
>>
>>920408
Bit driver is a plus. I bought the Skeletool just because I didn't need all the extra shit for fishing but if I need to change the batteries on my remote and the Leatherman is close, it does come in handy. Otherwise I have to walk like 20ft to the garage and get a real screwdriver.
>>
>>920408
>paying $150 for a subpar tool because muh titanium
Well it's your money, you're to throw it into the can trash if you want because for the shit you're implying then even a filthy chink $10 multitool is enough.
>>

>>920418
$150 is a lot, but you can't compare it to a $10 Chink tool. You can find some folders and fixed blades for cheap that will get the job done, but cheap multitools are always trash. The knives are worthless and the pliers will flex and break before you can grip anything important. Just spend $40-$50 on whatever the cheaper full size Leatherman is and you won't regret it.
>>
>>920418
Subpar compared to what? A bag filled with $150 worth of tools from Harbor Freight? One really nice Benchmade knife?

A multitool is what it is. It can't be as good at driving screws as a screwdriver, it can't saw wood as well as a skilsaw, it can't turn a bolt as well as a set of sockets and a ratchet, it can't cut as nicely as a boutique folding knife (though it comes close) but that's not the point.
>>
>>920424
>and the pliers will flex and break before you can grip anything important
>flex
I bought a Leatherman ST300 and sent it back because it flex like a mother fucker and its quality control was piss poor (the bottom of the handles and the pliers did not aligned properly).

Some people swear by them, others are shills and others just happen to have bad experiences with it, maybe it was a faulty one that happens 1 in 10000 but since it happened I never went back to multitools and I would ratter have the proper tool for the job. Other may have other opinion I don't care, whatever suits each other is good for me.

Of course the regular tool will work better, but a good multitool like a Leatherman will come pretty damn close in lots of situations compared to those cheap ass Walmart multitools.

Idk, the screwdriver and pliers on a Leatherman are probably better than any actual tools you could buy from Harbor Freight.

If you've got that budget I'd step it up from leatherman and get a Victorinox. I've loved mine and put it through some heavy abuse over the years - everything from sawing through not-so-dead maple & oak to cutting wires / barbed wire.

I used to have a leatherman, forgot which model but it was likely the "entry level" one - early 2000's. It was pretty good but the razors / saws were not nearly as sharp as the SwissTool's, and they've stayed sharp for a year or two at a time through use.

10/10, would recommend, SwissTool is boss as fuck.
>>
>>921173
you must have gotten a shiity leatherman. my first leatherman was issued to me from work in 2001 and the blade was razor sharp.

you can hate on leatherman if you want, but they come from the factory with razor sharp blades.
>>
>>920524
Leatherman Wave is great, I have one as well.

>scissors
>blunt tip blade

literally has all the specialty you would ever need
>>
>>920524
Can vouch for the Wave too.

Got it during my compulsory military service nearly 10 years ago and it still hasn't let me down.

Altho I tend to generally just use a knife or an axe when I'm hanging around between the trees. The Leatherman has been more of an universal tool for mainly out of woods stuff.
>>
>>920260
Gerber center drive.

I used to be a big fag for Leatherman Wave but I bought one of these it kicks ass.
>>
I have over a dozen. My fav for value and size is the rebar. If I could only have one, it would be the Sog powerlock. The best quality? Swisstool(spirit, cause it looks sexier and weighs a bit less) the most useful to compliment other tools? Supertool 300(cheap, all the tools are big and beefy)

Best /out/ tool? None. Multitools are for working with mechanical shit. There arnt bolts or screws in nature. Invest that money in a good fixed blade our hatchet. Those'll both be 1000x more useful.
>>
>>921256
except thay almost all /out/ gear does have screws and nuts.

I carry a leatherman and a sewing kit. Not because I want to sew leaves or screw trees, but because my man made gear might need repair.

A better example would be pliers + this.

I'm surprised I see SAKs suggested so rarely. I own a dozen or more MTs and yet my SAKs get the most carry of anything. My favorite is the Explorer.

If you DO want a pliers-based tool, though, I also really like Victorinox. I loved my Swisstool Spirit until I lost it and keep meaning to replace it. I think it's the best EDC tool on the market unless you regularly need to use it with gloves on.

I got a MUT but replaced the c4 punch and saw for the scissors and jigsaw bit holder from a surge (fit is not perfect but works).

Its heavy but I use it all the time, would recommend (though not the Eod version like OP has pictured)
>>
>>921236
>>921235

Wave user here as well. I had one from 2004-2008 until I lost it. Immediately bought another, and have carried it every day at work since then. Comes in handy.

Actually used it to break into a house this week. Not for illegal activities or anything, actually for work.
>>
>>920524
>>921235
>>921868
Sidekick user here, had it for a few years and has come in handy at work, in the woods, and around the house. It's a jack-of-all, master-of-none but when you're away from your proper tools it certainly gets the job done.

Most used bits for me are the screwdrivers, pliers, straight-blade, and can/bottle opener.

What really sets Leatherman apart from the others is the 25-year warranty. I lent my Sidekick to my sister and she snapped the pliers trying to manipulate a thick steel wire. I sent it back to Leatherman and after about a week I received a refurbished Sidekick in the mail. I expected the refurb to have scratches and it's folding bits to be stiff but it was as shiney and smooth as a new one.
>>
>>921309

SAKs are great but they're mostly made in China now. That might not matter to some but when I have a choice I try to buy American or at least not Chinese.
>>
>>921751
I really like my Gerber Dime but I haven't abused it enough. I would be down to use a larger Gerber but idk if I would pay Leatherman money for it unless they really used good quality stuff.
>>
>>920262
Couldn't agree more. I work maintenance at a big hospital. Over the years I've tried multitool made by Leatherman, SOG, Gerber and others and at the best of times they are vastly inferior to a dedicated screwdriver, pliers or whatever.

A multitool is certainly better than nothing but I think people really overstate their actual utility. If I thought there was any need for a real hand tool I'd just bring the tool with me rather than struggle with the inferior multitool tools.
>>
Got a ST300, was good for 4 years of medium to heavy use (outing, homesteading, military serving), though the two smaller screwdrivers did snap.

Finally sent it in for repairs after the tip of the pliers chipped. If I get it back fixed - I'll say it was 100% worth it.

Ordered a MUT, should come in soon. Plan to designate that as my service multitool, as it really does seem nifty for rifle maintenance (even if mine isn't an AR15 system).

Overall - I got one in the first place when I got a homestead - and got tired of realizing I need a tool that is half a mile away in another building.

Presumably because the OP is posting on /out/ rather than /k/ he's looking for an MT he can take innawoods rather than EDC around the office, in which case weight is absolutely critical. The pliers you posted probably weigh 2 or 3 times as much as a Leatherman and onlyh have a fraction of the functionality.
>>
>>922034

Wait, Victorinox doesn't make the knives in their Swiss plant any more?
>>
>>920262
Fuck no. I mean if your job requires a set of pliers, sure, but for outdoors multitools are key ( at least for me)

I keep my surge on my person pretty much all the time. I rarely need it through the week since i work on an office but at nights or on weekends i use it all the time, and it does a stellar job.
The pliers on a leatherman wave, charge or surge are perfect for small to meduim sized fish. The knife is easily accessable to cut line, the scissors are great for trimming up flies or roe bags.

Ill admit i dont use half the tools on my surge but the ones i do use i use alot. The 2 knives, scissors, can opener and screwdrivers all see regular use

All comes down to preference though. Some people prefer to have a pair of massive pliers incase they catch a 50" pike even when theyre fishing a pond with only bass in it
>>
Leatherman Wave is pretty damn good. I carried mine every single day no matter what I was doing til I broke it.

Used it to make quick car fixes, take care of small jobs I didnt want to get actual tools for at work and home, used it when /out/ constantly. I made my wife a nice walking stick with it once while hikimg during a break, and she used it once to saw down some small deadfall for a fire.

You know how I broke it? My friend was helping me with a bathroom remodel. We were pulling out old nails. I was using our only prybar so I handed him my leatherman to use the pliers.

Three nails in one of the jaws snapped right off. Apparently not made for leverage on that axis.

Still need to send it in for repairs.

Do it! You'll get it back (or a refurb) in a week and a half - just print the return form from their site and send it via USPS with tracking. You can't beat Leatherman's 25-year guarantee and it's better to get it taken care of before you need it again.
>>
>>920454
I bought a wave and quality was also poor, a lot of sharp edges, pliers were assembled too tight and it wasnt comfortable to use them, it was heavy. I have old cheap multitool which costed maybe 3$ and use it for about 10 years now, tools are shitty but its a great pair of folding pliers. In my opinion 90$ for wave is not worth it, since the quality isnt so good at all... I sent wave back to the shop and instead i bought victorinox huntsman, it's much better quality and 1/3 of the price of wave, and i still have my folding 3$ pliers.

My Skeletool pliers are still tight but I think they do that for a reason. The tools are meant to be used for years and years and I'm guessing they build them tight so they loosen up to the perfect amount after some good use without having too much play.

>>922245
Channel locks aren't actual pliers, anon just threw that together. I'm a big fan of this small pair of needle nose pliers for fishin. They slide right in my back pocket and even with the Skeletool being light for a multitool, the pliers and knife probably weigh less.

It's BS, Vic SAKs and MTs are still Swiss. The only things made in China are knockoffs and maybe the packaging for real ones. (I know Spyderco and other companies that produce their actual products in "better" countries still have their boxes made in China, so it wouldn't surprise me if Vic did the same.)
>>

Every victorinox blade has engraving "victorinox swiss made stainless" and its the proof that a SAK is a original victorinox product. Every SAK without this engraving is a knockoff.

So the steel was made in Switzerland and then sent to China to be cut, stamped, sharpened, assembled, polished, etc?
>>
>>924640
No, whole SAK is made in switzerland, the engraving is just a proof that its original. On every victorinox packaging you can see "swiss made". Every person which says that SAK's are made in china are just haters, or maybe they got a knockoff and believe it's original.

Is this board a bunch of teenagers who need /out/ to be just their thing, and nobody else's?

Anyway, to get back on topic, I've tried EDCing a Leatherman Wave and a Wingman, as well as a Gerber Mini Suspension, Suspension, and Dime. I've used them all innawoods. Yeah people still do it but cops can fuck you up.

>In France, the carrying of any Category 6 weapon (Armes de la 6e catégorie), defined as including any knife of any blade length with a fixed blade, or a folding blade with a locking system, is illegal, unless carried "for good reason", for example, as part of the tools of one's profession.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knife_legislation
>>
>>929920
In France its up to the police discretion. So it depends who you are and who the police is.
If its an expensive multi tool and you're a tourist, a police might want to take it for himself even though you were not causing trouble.

Also, best innawoods multitool is the surge. Because the file is removable and can be used to sharpen the blade, and the saw blade is interchangeable with common jig saw types.
>>
>>929930
>with a fixed blade, or a folding blade with a locking system

Actually I think I would be okay even in france, the Juice S2 is a folding blade but it has NO locking system.
>>
>>929935
Yeah seems to be the case, also the same for Nederlands. In Spain it actually can cause troubles.

Looking at the list Norway and Sweden are a no no. Austria and Lithuania are ok.

It rages me off that the state has a saying in what you can or not buy. Fuck some things it's not about carrying but even ownership in private property. Stupid fuck legislators and bureaucrats that never set foot out of their ivory towers think that a fucking knife is ok but the other one is not.

Based czechia.
>>
>>922034
Made in America means nothing for quality. I have a case stockman and the blades rub when opening/closing. Only 3 blades on it, tons of extra room. My saks never had that problem and they're built to much close tolerances. The factory edges were crap, too. Weren't even ground evenly. Saks always come sharp.
