I love cooking out and in too... Using small aluminium pan with non stick coating for frying and aluminium canteen cup for boiling. Just ripped off the handle for pan and using that aluminium trangia gripper to save place.... More pics from my camps bumpin

I carry a stanley for heating water, but usually when I'm out, I'm catching fish so my answer is going to have to be a sharpened stick.
>>
>>918379
>>918357
Do you cook anything you get from the surrounding area when out camping/hiking?
>>
>>918829
I'm open to it but no, can't say i do. I mean, I forage wild apples and berries and stuff but I don't otherwise cook anything attained /out/ (mushies, roots, fish & fauna, etc).
>>
>>918533
>sharpened stick.
>fish

My friends thought I was crazy whenever I did that. All I'd carry were a knife, salt, and seasonings. There's a lot you can cook on a stick, but fish are like made for that purpose. You don't even need to scale them, jab the stick through them, roast, and peel the skin and scale back to eat.

>>918830
That's all I do. Not for winter though, unless I am camping in one of the wilderness areas that allow hunting, but I don't like winter camping. Too muddy in winter these years.
>>
>>918832
>Fishin' sticks. Yup! No dishes, no pack weight, and includes seasoning (my usual is western red cedar smoke, but it changes depending on where I'm fishing at).

>just a knife, salt and seasoning.
Once the snow melts off, I'm doing just that; You know the "one can" challenge? You get whatever you can pack into a standard 12oz soup can and a dull 6" hunting knife. Two weeks with no other supplies, I'm excited.
>>
>>918842
When I did that a few times 25 years ago I only had what could fit in one 35mm film container. No knife. It was summer of course. Thus, I came up with all sorts of ways to cook food without a knife. I have sycamore trees in my area so most food not on a stick was cooked in those wrapped up and buried in coals. If I had to do it again, I'd make some clay pots.

>>
>>918863
That's awesome! I'm not quite ready for the film canister, but I'm pretty confident most of the people in my group can handle "one can" well enough.

I've worked natural clay a few times, made ashtrays, weed pipes, other little trinkets; I tried a few times to make a coffee mug and struggled with waterproofing. If I'd stayed longer I probably would have tried some things, but without internet access for six weeks, I couldn't look it up...
>>
>>918874
I gut, clean and season mine before putting them on the stick. Also, that's a huge fucking fire pit... or someone was catching minnows.

would /out/ recomend the non-stick coating on Trangia pans?
>>
>>918921
Rocket stoves use small sticks as fuel. No need for hard work or looking for fuel. A single fallen limb as tall as you is normally enough fuel to make a few meals.
>>
>>917415
I got a Trangia, the cheap, small version with gas cooker and alcohol stove. I find it pretty neat because it has everything in it, and packs small and light.
Fell into a gap 10m deep between rock and ice in Iceland while in the bottom of my backpack and only had a few dents that i could easily push out. The construction is wind proof and cooks fast. There are many possibilities to upgrade or get new parts. Don't have a picture atm though because I'm on my phone.

There's no need to cut and clean fish if you are cooking them on a stick.

Is this stove good? Thinking about getting it for a survival bag.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000A8C5QE/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=226AUJPSPOUPG&coliid=I24HECTL45N2EV

This one looks good also but is more expensive, and so is the fuel.
>>
>>919093
Fuel costs also include being able to turn off the fuel at any time you want. Thus, you are not wasting an entire brick of fuel when you can merely turn a knob on the canister to stop the flame. Then again you could cut up the bricks of fuel into smaller pieces and only feed it as you need it instead of using an entire brick. That will take practice.
>>
>>919114
Valid point, but it is still more expensive. Any cheaper ones that are still good?
>>
>>919022
I'm not trying to mock you, but do you understand the physics behind it? I've seen several DIY builds that technically burn, but obviously don't utilize the core concepts of insulation and long burn chamber size in order to maximize heat efficiency. Have you seen any that would be worth building?
>>
>>917274
Personally I like my Optimus Crux foldable stove and can fit it and the gas canister inside my GSI kettle or MSR pot. I can also boil my mug or my klean kanteen right over a fire.

Seriously the best though is just taking whatever you want to eat up together with a bit of seasoning and wrapping it in foil and cooking it over a campfire (if you can have a campfire).
>>
>>918842
Why does it have to be dull? Am I allowed to sharpen on rocks once I am /out/, or does it serve another purpose?

I really like your post; it has all valid information. Mine is in these: >>918413 to >>918423

The only thing I want to do differently, with this design, is to have a burn chamber that has thicker metal than food-can thickness. That will allow it to last years longer. Right now I'll just retrofit some inserts, from other food cans, to do the same thing.
>>
>>919151
It actually has to be sharpened to complete the challenge.

The original SERE-type challenge, as it was explained to me by a guy from Fairchild AFB about twenty years ago, was that you get either a soap dish or a band-aid tin (We've decided to just standardize it to any 12oz can) and whatever you can fit inside of it and have it stay closed on its own, as well as a dull knife and one set of standard-issue BDUs without buttons or laces. The challenge is that, after two weeks, your knife must be sharp and you must be in full uniform (which includes a buttoned jacket, laced boots, and being clean shaven).

Since everyone that I go /out/ with is civilian, instead of BDUs, we'll just wear whatever we typically wear for that season. Our first time doing this challenge is planned for early summer of this year.
>>
>>919170
The location of where you do this will play the largest role in how easy it will be. So long as you are well informed of course.
>>
>>919170
>12oz can

Tips:

-Place a few ziploc bags into your can then fill it. The bags won't take up too much space and become very useful when you unpack.
-Select a can/container that isn't lined with enamel or plastic and has a top you can fully open. You can use this as a cooking vessel. (Stainless steel is best really.)
-You can make a paper tube which can be wrapped with fishing line which can be inserted into the can that will press against the entire inside of the can without wasting too much space. This can work for round, oval, rectangle, or square cans, just conform the tube to the shape.
-The shape of the can and the shapes of your items play an important roll in how much stuff you can fit into it. A square or rectangle can normally fits more into it than a round can.
>>
>>919173
My group is all Cascadians, so natural resources are pretty abundant and easily identified. It's almost cheating.

>>919177
All good tips! We'll be waiting until after the challenge is attempted before we share loadouts with each other, but I'm planning on using a Spam can. The shape and untextured sides are more cohesive to packing items, but will still boil water if needed (my predominant water purification will be bleach).

Anyone now a good way to get BPA out of a can?
>>
>>919180
>It's almost cheating.

lol That's how I feel most of the time. The only real difference is having internet and a roof over my head in the area where I live.

>Anyone now a good way to get BPA out of a can?

1: Heat the can in hot fire to burn off the paint on the outside and the lining on the inside. Keep the metal from getting burned through of course. It should be done when it stops smoking.
2: Use steel wool to clean it further.

Do you have a sealing lid for it?
>>
>>919236
>Do you have a sealing lid for it?
I think the catfood lids work on soup cans, but I don't have anything for a Spam can.

There's this: http://www.benheck.com/spam-saver-lid/ but I'm too cheap to throw down for that.
>>
>>919250
I also found one at https://www.myminifactory.com/object/can-lid-spam-26300

However, it seems as though Korean cans come with lids. I'm going to check my local World Market and some Korean grocers and see if I can find one.

I've also sent an email to [email protected] complaining about the discrimination. Blah, blah, personal army bullshit... Who wants to spam Spam?

Because you are cooking it on a stick. The guts are on the other side of the ribs and the never go through to the meat. The skin and scale pull off in one big piece once cooked. You just peel it back and flake out the meat under it.

Here in europe. 26 for normal one and 59 for mountain food system. A bit too much for boiling water.

Beef jerky. Canteen with water. Hardtack.

What more do you need, you little bitches?

That would probably work really well in a campfire, just nestle it in the coals and you're good. I bought one originally intending to use it with my can stove, but it wasn't wide enough for my liking because more heat escaped up the sides, despite the aluminium windscreen/reflector and the heavier metal took longer to heat water to boiling. Would definitely use it on a weekend camping trip where you could build an actual campfire though. Ended up selling mine in a yardsale for five bucks.

I use a titanium cup and a rocket stove to boil water for instant meals currently but I also had a Texsport Bugaboo pot set which was awesome it came with pans for lids and pots for other things I cooked eggs and all kinds of stuff in it and it was so good I actually used it at the house. I burned up my major pots Teflon cooking chicken and wanted to replace the set but they made it different now and it looks like it sucks. pic related is one made by GSI but it looks like it has plastic on the lid so probably cant use as a pan.

I was at work one time, don't know why but I ended up drinking around 12 of those. Later that night, I was out that night with some buds at a bar. Ended up having a paranoid breakdown and thought the waitress drugged me, standard paranoia BS. Everytime I see those my teeth feel like chattering.

Zip-top mini breast milk bags are very useful for this kind of kit. Very secure, very cheap, and collapse and roll up nicely.

DMT makes a nice flat diamond sharpener, one side coarse the other side fine. Like 5 bucks.

i got two sets of trangia with only the pan as non-stick. It's good for bacon and the likes, but it's hard to keep in good condition. I cover my pans in a thin towel, which dubbles for cleaning, so not extras there. but the pots i never figured somthing smart out, so they're regular (and i'm happy with that!)
>>
>>919020
Also, do get gas or multifuel. The time savings are worth every penny, including the ones you saved on the regular pots

I straight up look down on people who bring dedicated coffee making equipment out.

Just use your cup, let it settle for a minute, and drink it carefully leaving the grounds at the bottom.

Turks have been doing it for centuries.

Anyone dehydrate meals that they rehydrate in freezer bags?

Doing some red beans and rice atm, and searching for some other food ideas.
>>
>>930326
>Are you talking about propane/butane anisters?
Yep.
>>
>>931857
The shape of both the rice and the beans is unsettlingly similar.

Also: make jerky.
>>
>>919165
would there be an advantage or disadvantage in angling the intake downwards? I've seen it done on other rocket stoves to induce some degree of self-feeding so that you don't have to keep poking it.
>>
>>931857
I've done rice, it takes as long to rehydrate as it does to cook raw, so it's not really worth it. Whole beans would probably end up being the same, but I haven't tried; I have done bean paste, which rehydrates very well, as well as chili, which was pretty awesome, but you have to make fat-free chili and add oil when you rehydrate it. Same with whole pastas (ditalini works really well); you have to make a fat-free sauce to dehydrate and put the oil in when you're rehydrating it.

Banana mango paste with banana chips makes an incredible trail pudding, especially if you put some 'nilla wafers in after. Pumpkin pie sauce can be done the same way with graham crackers (but I like it better as chips).

You can also blend up potatoes with enough water to keep it runny, add whatever flavoring you want, and make giant rectangular pringles. Grind up salt in a coffee grinder to give it that "just like a pringle" saltiness.

Final Note: Don't buy those overpriced tray liners. You can get silicone placemats for next to nothing online, they work like a charm.
>>
Why are canisters so popular?

Are they cheaper than liquid fuel stoves that use white gas?
>>
>>932283
I think it's a combination of the fact that they boil water extremely fast (though they suck to cook on) and that they're very clean, since all you're doing is boiling water. My friend has one, I usually take the charity of quick morning coffee before we get the fire started and I can afford the time to boil water myself.

The advantage is to prevent hot coals from popping out and for fuel to autofeed. It doesn't help updrafting. The inlet for mine is very slightly angled, but not really noticeable. I've never had anything fall out of it. Though, I don't use wood thick enough to pop when burned. A future design I'll be making will have an angled fuel-air intake for testing.
