Any upland hunters here? If so, let's talk double barrel

Any upland hunters here? If so, let's talk double barrel vs pump vs semi-auto. Personally since I'm an old-timey fag I prefer over/under, like pic related (ATI cavalry SX 20 gauge). It feels more solid to me and gives me the option of multiple chokes in one gun.
Thoughts?

I have a Rem 870 Upland Special just for that.

A 12 ga Rem 870 Wingmaster for general purpose. Both have screw in Rem chokes.

My 10 ga is my SxS skybuster! A nice, 30" bbl, very heavy, Spainish double. Sandhill cranes and evil ravens are not safe!

I put a lot of discrimination into these choices because I'm not really a shotgun guy, but the Rems are first and second on the right, pic related.

A nice O/U could be in the future? Prolly a 12ga, for the load versatility.

I would have more guns but I'm a po' boy, hence the $500 O/U. Just got it this past summer after busting my ass as a farm hand, finally gonna take it out quail hunting next week on a little hunting/fishing camp excursion (will post pics eventually, should be fun.) Since I got it though I've just been busting clays, which it does pretty well. For quail I use an improved cylinder and modified, my loads are winchester super x size 6, 1 oz low-brass. any advice on chokes and load choice would be greatly appreciated.
>>
I have a couple break opens (.410 and 20 g) made by some Brazilian company that I always forget and a Remington 870 12 g.

Even though they are low quality, I like the break open single shots. A friend bought the Savage Model 42 (o/u .22/.410) and it is way too cheap construction for my tastes.

When I have some money I'm going to look into a nice 20 g or o/u .22/.410 or .22/20 g. I like both the .410 and .22 for grouse hunting, it would be nice to not have to choose between the two.

Get off your self-righteous moral soapbox and check it.
>>
>>912797
For quail you might be better of with #7 shot. They aren't that tough.

For my 10ga I use #4 lead for both Sandhill cranes and evil ravens. Fixed choke SxS, so hardly upland style hunting. More suited to waterfowl.

I just don't do much upland, yet I live on Dove Dr and can take dove off the wire with a pellet gun, if I had one!

Not even the guy you are trying to reply to, but since when is community moderation a bad thing?

>OP posts about gun
>post has nothing to do with area, prey, weather, landscape, conditions, etc. (anything to do with /out/ pretty much)
>post focuses on gun preference and traits

How the fuck is this post not /k/? Don't act like a child when the man had every right to point the OP to /k/. No one is attacking OP, but instead directing him to a board where he will be guaranteed proper replies. Why did you get so defensive?

Willing ignorance is terrible, anon. It's worse than pointing someone to a more appropriate board.

He's talking about "equipment" for bird hunting. If equipment discussion is not tolerated, this board would be pretty empty.
>>
>>912397
Noob hunter here.

I have access to both upland and waterfowl. If i wanted a versatile gun for both, what would you recommend?

I also would be interested in something with a multiple choke system vs buying many barrels.
>>
>>913386
Cheap and decent multi-purpose gun is the mossberg 500. My dad has one, got it many years ago. I used it up until I bought pic related. Comes with the five standard chokes, and is easy to maintain.
>>
What size shot do you use for rabbits? I know about 6 is good but I got a ton of those 7.5 laying around. Shot squirrels with 6 and had to boot stomp a few so worried about the smaller 7.5

If cost is not an issue a semi may be nice if you're hunting more birds. I've heard 1187 are not bad.
>>
>>914039
That depends on if he is carrying it all day imo.

For grouse n small game I use the single shot .410 since it doesn't butcher the game and it is very light. Only downside is pricy ammo.

And for ducks I use the pump, here I could see using an auto loader since you don't hump it around all day.

Although I'm sure there are some nice spendy light semis, just can't justify getting one to get muddy n wet while duck hunting.

Also single shots rule! They are easy to shoot, clean, and carry! In addition they teach you to not take shitty shots since you have no follow-up shot.

I have been hunting with shotguns for, I don't know, a little over forty years. There was a time when I went every day.

When you talk about shotguns, it's like of like talking about your taste in cars, members of the opposite sex, or whatever...it comes down often to your taste.

A nice solid over/under is the romantic choice. A classic, especially in a lighter gauge. But of course you are limited to two shells. A little like fly fishing, it's partly about the equipment.

Auto shotguns, like your Rem 1100, are very popular and you can put a lot of lead in the air in a very short time. Some tend to waste shots. The action of the auto takes a bit of the kick away. The down side, if they get dirty, or if you are hunting in icy conditions, they can freeze up on you. They take a little more care and cleaning.

My gun of choice is the pump. It always works, even when covered with ice. To me it is just the right weight. I have been shooting the same Rem 870 since my college days. My daughter shoots a youth model.

When I bought that gun, there was no such thing as adjustable chokes. I got two barrels, an improved cylinder just for quail, and a full choke for everything else. I have been shooting full choke for everything for years and years.

Yes, you have to be a better shot, sometimes let the bird fly a bit before taking the shot, but it hits hard. You can use it for everything and it give a bit more range.

There are not wrong or right answers, just opinions and preferences.
>>
Why would you attach a handsaw to a rifle?
>>
>>916491
>I.C. & Full

But no Modified?

What's your take on that choke, wjat is its use?
>>
>>916508

My take is the modified is sort of a split the difference. Not perfect for either, but trying to be more versatile. When I take a new hunter dove hunting, which I seem to do almost every year, I give them a shotgun with a mod choke. Yes they can't shoot as far, or hit as hard, but they get more birds on the shots they are just off a little.

I don't shoot trap or skeet all that often, but when I do, I really like a mod choke.

A decent amount of my hunting is/was for waterfowl, and they are hard to bring down, especially geese. I like the full for them every time.

It really comes down to the length of your shot and the spread of your pattern. If you are hunting woodcock in a thick wood, you don't want a full choke, but if you are shooting high flying whitewings, you can't get there with an IC. Well, you can, but they are not suited to the job at hand.
>>
>>916508
Also, I would have loved to have all three, and a skeet barrel as well, but money was tight. Besides there is always other costs, like decoys, gas to get to the hunting spot, and shells, etc...

Think of it as IC short, Mod medium, Full long range.

You are looking for your effective distance where you have a big pattern, but yet you are still hitting your intended target (bird, rabbit, squirrel, whatever) with several pellets for a quick clean kill. Once your pattern spreads to a point that you might only hit with a single BB or two, or perhaps even miss even though you shot a good shot, you are just hoping to get lucky.

I really recommend anyone new to shotgunning, to shoot several shells into paper or a cardboard box at a few distances, they think they might be shooting at game, just to learn what is happening down range to their pattern.
>>
>>916511
>>916519
Thank you.

I assume Cylinder Bore chokes fall under the Modified for range?

>>
>>916534
Cylinder bore wider than skeet. I would hesitate to use it if you think any shots are beyond 20 yards.

I've only really ever used Ithaca model 37 pump guns. I can't say for certain that they're the best, but they've always suited me very well. I have a 12 and a 20 and use them for both deer and small game.
I also have a .410 Winchester, but I just use it for plinking and varmints.

>>
>>923728
Varies a lot state by state but its generally fairly restrictive and bit of a touchy subject in "polite society"
Where it is permitted there are strict seasons and licensing requirements.
In this instance I was interstate in NSW where it is permitted but only on private cropland as pest control, no limit on how many you can shoot but there are a few protected species.

Yeh I eat them, just take the breast and make schnitzels, sausages and salamim. Got about 20lbs of breast from two weekends shooting.

Guns are lighter, way easier to point, better patterning, generally superiour in every way.

I also reload my ammo because I'm an adult and can spend 400 on a reloading press, so all of your other points are moot.

Beretta silver pigeon a best.
>>
>>927140
>>927156

These points are valid. I am glad you like the 28 gauge, I think it is great that you use it and reload your own shells.

I live in a major city and you can not find any thing 28, or 16 either. You can only get 12,20, and 410 easily. Everything else would have to be ordered.

If someone was only going to be a casual shooter/hunter getting a 20 gauge would make much more sense. Getting into reloading makes you dedicated and serious, not necessarily an adult.
