Anybody who actually knows military/tactical gear can instantly tell the difference between "military-inspired" fashion stuff and the real deal.

That said, that's not the reason to avoid the stuff. Tactical gear is designed around a different set of priorities and needs compared to /out/ gear. It may not match your climate, it tends to be heavy, it's designed for use with a plate carrier, etc. Low visibility may also be a disadvantage in non-SHTF use too, in many normal situations you want to be visible so rescuers can find you if you get hurt or so hunters don't accidentally shoot you, etc.
