Mass animal deaths have been happening for thousands of years, it's just that human globalization has allowed for a larger area that we humans observe, and so we simply witness them happen. 500 years ago you didn't have hundreds of people a year traipsing through the artic circle were reindeer and elk migrate, and so nobody was there to see 10,000 elk die over a week from a disease.
