What kind of socks do you use during the winter while hiking or whatever you do when you're outdoors? Do you go double, so you always go double?

I use REI expedition weight wool socks with a polypro liner.
Various wool. Alpaca for special occasions. If you double up you need roomy enough boots that you don't restrict blood circulation, or your feet will be even colder.

summer socks are darn tough hiker crew. a bit thinner and come up to lower calf.
winter socks are darn tough boot cushion, go up over my calves.
(short dude, 5'3" so I wear small socks)

The Kirkland brand merino wool socks are pretty good. 70% merino wool, 29% nylon, 1% spandex, $12.99 for 4 pairs.

thick merino wool, and if its really cold absolutely nothing beats a proper fur boot liner. the only problem is you can't buy sou you have to make them yourself
I have some vermont socks and I went kayaking on Saturday, it was about 40 degrees and I stepped in knee deep water. Kept kayaking for like 3 hours after that and wasn't really uncomfortable at all.
