I've got some and am looking for more mines. This is the entrance to one. Most of our mines weren't company owned but just guys getting in on the gold rush 100 years ago.

more inside. I liked this mine because the sides were dug into the rock and didn't come off as sketchy. The problem was the water. I couldn't see the floor and the water was only about 6 inches deep.

This one was super sketchy. The entrance collapsed so someone dug into the top of the original mine entrance. You had to superman dive to get in.

my last pic. It was so creepy in this one because it seemed as if it could collapse at any minute. Water was dripping all over. The piece of plastic was something I found to try and keep from getting so wet and dirty crawling through the entrance. I look on a site called mindat.org to try and find them.

We camped on a waste rock pile. I assume the miners covered this vertical shaft with waste rock as they were moving it from another site. The collapse of the collar created this sink hole.

I honestly don't worry too much about air quality. Most of these mines have had some airflow. I don't know enough about geology to really answer that. I've seen quartz, lava rock, granite

Depending on the rock type, carbon monoxide in the air can be forced into the rock during periods of high barometric pressure, and can be released as the barometric pressure drops.
>>
>>909731
What rock types? Most the mines I've been in have multiple portals or open stopes allowing air to blow through, but even the single tunnel mines I've been in have all been fine.
>>
>>909888
Technically this could happen for any rock.

Your fine grained igneous rocks (i.e. granite, basalt, gabbro, etc) will be the least porous and least likely to exhibit this behavior.

Porous rocks, like sandstone, can be very prone to this.

If you have flowing fresh air, then you should be ok.
>>
>>901842
how was the air quality? could you taste it in there? hard to breathe? dusty?
>>
>>910820
Some parts are nice fresh air. We wear dusk masks in some areas. It just depends on the mine.
>>
>>910062
These have all been hard rock mines. I've never heard of big mineral deposits in sand stone.

In many areas the timbering seemed to be the only thing keeping this mountain up. These mines were all multi level, and we walked several miles of tunnels and still only saw about half the mines. The mountain was Swiss cheese with all the adits, drift tunnels, and stopes.

Are the holes made by explorers?
Why is there a need to seal off side tunnels inside the mine (far away from the adit entry)?

It was cinder blocked at the entrance. It wasn't done by the miners, more than likely it was sealed by the BLM or Arizona state mine inspector. None of the drift tunnels were sealed other than one that had been back filled by the miners.

Another San Diego bro? I enjoy the odd mine on occasion myself, though not as much as I'd like to. My experience in the area has basically been limited to the Warlock mine on the Old Banner Toll Road and the Ready Relief mine. Know of any other interesting mines in the county that are worth a visit?

Pic related was the entrance to the Golden Gem mine a few years back. There's since been a fire in the area that's burnt away the major foliage. I don't know the status of the mine itself. Last I checked, the entrance was partially collapsed but it opened up further in.
