Labs have soft mouths, meaning they don't bite down on what they're retrieving like most breeds do.

Still hurts.

Soft mouth should be an innate characteristic of a good Lab. Always reward pup for a speedy retrieve, don't play tug, and keep designated chew toys distinct and separate from retrieving toys.
A "forced fetch" can be taught as part of formal training after the secondary teeth set, but it's pretty intense. Best done by a pro, or with a very light touch.
My last Lab didn't need it. I tried, he was like" WTF? Get me off this table and just throw the goddamn thing."

This one needed it. Within a month he went from an incorrigible disobedient Alpha wannabe to my bestest and loyalist friend.
>>
I have a border collie/Labrador mix. She will not retrieve. She either gets too excited and runs past the toy or picks it up and then doesn't bring it all the way back to me.

No way, Brutus is a pit bull.

You can teach a dog to retrieve; you may need to use some positive reinforcement so the dog is more inclined to actually come to you with the toy. Then you have the joy of training 'let go'. Border collies are smart and labs are natural retrievers so I have no doubt you can train it if you look into it.
