Im a kiwi fag so you mmv depending on your geographical location. My location is hot or wet to the extreme.

In summer -

On body:

merino liner socks
oily wool outer socks
leather mountaineering boots with goretex liner and swazi ali-gaiters or skellerup bullers with neoprene puttees for river work
merino trunk underwear
swazi poley shorts (synthetic tricot material).
cotton singlet

in pack :

merino base layer of longjohns and longsleeve top
Swanndri bushshirt/goretex raincoat.

In Winter -

On body:

Socks and footwear as above
Merino longjohns with polypropelene longjohns on top (merino keeps me feeling fresher but isnt as robust)
Swazi poley shorts
Merino longsleeve top
Shearers singlet
Swanndri bushshirt / goretex raincoat

In pack
Fleece trousers

Lately I have been ditching the raincoat for the swanndri and just getting soaked with a merino baselayer meaning I am wet but still warm.

With a raincoat I am still wet from sweat when pumping up a hill and genrally uncomfterable. Also every patch of blackberry or gorse I hit I cant help but think "Im ruining my $600 coat". The swanndri is alot tougher and dont have to worry about it around sparks or snags and it is quieter. Just heavy when wet is all.

Only for stuff in reasonably good weather, where I can get home within 3 hours at max, if the weather turns to shit.
apart from Fjällravens poly-cotton mix, properly waxed.

Shells and softshells and briefs (why does nobody make good, good looking merino briefs that wont grill my balls?) and maybe some fleece, but only if I will never encounter other human beans.
Wearing synthetics for more than half a day just smells so fucking bad.
