Went out for a nice little hike the other day and came back with a rash on my whole neck, face, belly, and right arm. Its been 3 days and im on corticosteroids with no real relief yet.
How can I go and do longer hikes, camping, all that jazz and not get major allergic reactions to every tree and plant under the sun? I was wearing boots, jeans, and a sweatshirt. Are gloves essential?
Try some antihistamins on the way

learn to recognize poisonous plants.

don't roll around in poisonous plants. and wear pants, long sleeves, and even gloves if you are afraid.
mosquitos and biting flies are a far more serious irritant imo than poison oak.
Learn what plants in your area have irritants and what they look like. Avoid at all costs. If you think you've had exposure be sure to isolate what ever part of you is exposed. Wrapping in bandage can work to isolate, you'll just have to fight the urge to scratch.

Also don't touch your clothes in places that come into contact with said poisonous plants. Permethrin works great for ticks if that's what you have a problem with.
I've spent 4 days /out/ since last weekend and I've got some cuts and bruises, but they are really inevitable with what I was doing. Sometimes you can't do some /out/ things without some pain. Just the way it is.
Avoid having anything brush upon you.
