eh, prolly not long-term. olive oil goes rancid because it's all organic fats. you should probably get some mineral oil. in a pinch with my hatchet and my murrah I've greased the blades with chapstik and that seems to work fine and i know it's non-toxic

Good blade, make sure to keep it all oiled up. Including hitting the handle with boiled lineseed oil.

You can, you need to clean it often and re apply, or it does get nasty. You can always put a patina on the blade, that'll help against rust.
