Want to make an "urban bugout bag".

I don't intend on making homelessness become my lifestyle, it's just that I want to be prepared if I suddenly lose the roof over my head, and I happen to live in an urban/suburban area. The plan would be to make it to the nearest homeless shelter or otherwise survive until I can get a new pad (1 week outside at most).

I already carry on my person every day:

You severely overestimate how much you'd be using any of that stuff in an urban survival situation. You don't lose your apartment and suddenly become bear grylls inna city, lighting fires for warmth and needing to boil water. Having enough layers to be warm is basically all you need in a city environment, assuming you aren't staying homeless for an extended period or living in the north. I'd suggest having a small tarp too. If you have a small down shell sleeping bag that will work fine and fit into your bag well, I prefer to have something to cover with while sleeping but if you've got enough layers it's about the same. I used a cheap down shell rated to 35 degrees for the first year I was homeless.

No, you usually don't need anything special to drive them as long as it's below 33 feet or something. Actually, a bus you need a special liscence if it's liscenced as a commercial vehicle, but if you liscence it as a recreational you don't need anything special. The one in that picture was 22 feet long and a class C, we don't have it anymore but it was a beast.

Look outside your immediate area, everyone's got them expensive there because even the normal people in Seattle are buying RVs to park in Sodo and tailgate with a dozen times out of the year. You'll probably have to look on the other side of the Cascades. Go into Craigslist and set your advanced search options to "Cars/Trucks, Recreational Vehicles, $1000-3000" and then alternate searches between "RV, Bus, Motorhome"

Its good that you have someone to check them out for you. Make sure you check the wheel size too, i had to drop 600 bucks on new wheels because my tire size stopped being produced 2 years ago. Like he said, the license is only needed if you are driving commercialy for dollars. I dont know if it applies where you live but check the size limits of street side parking if you end up with a big bus. Would suck to take it out for fun and end up with a parking ticket. Get it registered as an rv, there are probably restrictions on that in WA but that only means youll have to cover some shit in the overhaul like adding water, sleeping and living space etc. I didnt have to do shit, registered it in KS and they gave no fucks. Insure it as an rv too, my bus insurance is $20/mo.

But I've talked a lot of people about bench removals, ordinances that limit when and where charities can give out food, "eyesore" laws, shit like that. I know it mostly affects homebums, but it can affect us travellers too. That's why I try to limit my time in cities to picking up temp jobs.

I've been spending my last few summers working /out/ jobs and camping in Alaska, then heading South when the winter sets in. But honestly, I think I'm over the lower 48. There's a chick that really wants me to come to Skagway for the winter, she's cool but she drinks a lot. If not I've got a line on a place north of Fairbanks where I can work for a bit and upgrade from a car to a van or truck and that'll make year rounding more feasible without having to rent a place.

What I mean is that Alaska is very big, a lot of towns are very remote and a lot of people work seasonal/transient jobs so theres an infrastructure of services (both official and unofficial) that are more friendly to travellers than you would find in a lot of places in the lower 48.

A lot of towns have a facebook page or webboard (the Talkeetna Trader, Skagway Swap) so you can roll into town, get some wifi and find housing, food, sidework, etc. without a lot of bureaucracy. People in the Interior especially like dealing in cash or trade.
