Hey /out/ I'm thinking of getting a nice sleeping bag that will last me my whole life for my 21st. I have no idea what is good in a sleeping bag though and need some help. What would you guys recommend? Is down good? I live in a cooler part of Australia if you need a guide for the climate. Thanks in advance. (Also general sleeping bag thread)

Down is more expensive but has much better warmth-to-weight/volume ration when compressed. Down must also NOT get wet as it takes forever to dry and getting it soaked can actually ruin it for good if you arent carefull.

I'd recommend a synthetic sleeping bag for you because of these reasons - unless it rarely rains where you live.
Chose a bag from a respected brand and be sure that the min. comfort temperature is as low as the lowest temperature that you expect to use it in (the "extreme" temperature rating IS extreme and you will not sleep comfortably in these ranges)

Thanks!

If you want something that will last a lifetime get a synthetic bag because of the first post. Even if it doesn't rain it soaks up moisture over time, ruining it over that lifetime.
Choose a bag that has ratings for 3-seasons, they are more versatile and will do you more good than a very specialized sleeping bag.
Carinthia is very good as the anon above states, but really almost any decent prized bag will do. It just comes to how what ratio weight to money you can pocket out.

Anyone know about slumberjack sleeping bags?

Woot has Sojourn 20 degree bags on sale for cheap and I'm thinking of picking one up:

Get a quilt. Sleeping bags are retarded

Dubs of truth, get a lightweight 20-30degree quilt, temps really depend on your location and season though..

Hammockgear for quality but not crazy expensive, and aegismax for China ripoff poor flag status.

Quilts make more sense once you realize the insulation you're laying on isn't being used, you paid to waste that down/synthetic and you're lugging an extra pound around for no reason.
