OK serious answer time. NOLS is basically a nonprofit school for /out/door guides and educators. They teach people specific skills like mountaineering, flyfishing, caving, rafting, etc. But they also teach broader things like outdoor ethics, wilderness medicine, risk management, expedition logistics, etc. Probably their most popular offering is Wilderness First Responder, which a lot of guide and tour companies require their employees to be certified in.
They also do a lot of outreach programs and helps develop the Leave No Trace program.

Is it a school in the sense that you have to enroll, or do you just apply for their courses? I'm not from the US but they have a couple of courses that are run in Scandinavia which I'd be interested in.

Because so much of the courses take students into the back country students typically have to submit forms verifying their physical and emotional fitness as well as insurance forms and the like. You can get college credit through University of Utah if so inclined.
But there's no enrollment per we, you pay to take a class and if you fail it you can take it over.

>Leave No Trace program
Can we please end this meme? Everyone leaves traces and hardcore LNT'rs are pussies of the nth degree.

Is there any age limit?

Not sure, never looked into it. Most of my friends that did NOLS were college age.
I'd imagine 18, but some classes might be younger with parental consent. I'd just e-mail them and ask.

They appear to do "prime" courses for people aged 23 and over. I guess that would imply that all their other courses are targeted towards people 22 and under, although it seems you can apply for their regular courses at any age
