Does /out/ wear softshells? I just got pic related and love it. They're so fucking versatile but nobody seems to talk about them here.

Softshells serve no purpose by doing several things poorly.

What are you talking about? They're a great active layer when you have no reason to expect rain or when snow is only a possibility.

Softshells suck in snow. Not waterproof over hours when its only around freezing, not warm enough when its really cold. Not really windproof in the storm.

What is the purpose of a softshell?

Have you heard of layering? Softshells are the fucking bomb. Put warm layers under a waterproof exterior and you'll stay warm and dry.

Midlayer+softshell for active winter/fall days with clear skies. There's no beating it.

I wear a softshell and just put my raincoat on if it starts raining or snowing, it works fine for me.
>>
I tried to use soft shell jackets but can't make them work.. I'm in Aus and rarely hike below freezing though.

I just wear a long sleeve hiking shirt and put my rain jacket over the top if i'm cold. When I want to stop and set up camp I put on my thermal top and down jacket.

Softshells are excellent for start-stop or high output activities. The whole point is that they're way more breathable than a hardshell or puffy. It's a relatively technical garment that is mostly appropriate for alpinism, mountaineering. Not really suitable for slow walks in the woods.
