>live in hilly paradise
>wouldn't mind digging tunnels into the hills
>have really good knowledge about such structures and drainage, etc
>have all the time in the world to actually do it
>actually have the tools to do it if I wanted to
>too scared to do it simply because i have all that knowledge and know all the risks

Doper detected.

/diy/ has bunker-anon, might also be worth a try.

DO NOT mention shipping containers!
>>
>>881088
Well now I'm curious why I shouldn't ask about such things

We get a lot of anons on /diy/ trying to make bunkers out of buried shipping containers. If you want to be taken seriously/don't want your thread deleted - do not mention shipping containers.

Pic related explains why such a thing is a stupid idea.

Well, they tried.
>>
>>881166
only a dumb redneck would spend that kind of money and effort on something they didn't bother to research on even a rudimentary level.
>>
>>881149
I don't understand, shipping containers are meant to be stacked on top of eachother while filled with stuff... how does this crumple under a little dirt?
>>
>>882105
Cause of where the weight is distributed

Just put them in vertically
>>

I guess that makes sense, if I was going to build an underground bunker or tunnel system, I'd use a shit ton of lumber. Larger scale version of "The Great Escape". I'd also make sure I had lots of people there with me in case of collapses
>>
>>880935
So why not do it, taking all available precautions? E.g multiple redundancyin exits/entrances, refuge spaces, timber supports at intervals.

Or better yet dig trenches, put in prefabbed concrete corridor or pipe sections, and backfill. That's my plan for when I eventually build my super spergy manchild base. I love the idea of being underground - the idea of digging with tons of soil above my head, not so much.

They stack with the corners as the points of contact, meaning only the corners of the top are load bearing. The rest is relatively thin sheet metal.

It's a ridiculous shape to use for a structure anyway. Theres a reason bomb shelters, subway tunnels, bridge arches etc are usually tubular or domed. Even if we supposed the flat roof was strong enough to not cave in, you'd have the issue of rainwater pooling on top.
>>
>>881149
How did they expect to breath with the door closed.
>>
>>882105
I guess containers rest only at the corners on top of each other

But the bottom has to be strong or otherwise the contents would fall out when they put it on a crane.

So why not just put it upside down?

Sides still cave in.
