Milfag here, it's both lightweight and compacts well. I imagine it would be great for ultralight type stuff, when we drop rucks and go out of our assault bag I always bring it with me, along with the poncho. Great little makeshift sleeping bag, when the full sleep system is a little too bulky to carry in your AB.

Also is enough to take the edge off when it's too cold, or cold and wet when attached to your poncho. Nice little blankie, and even if you're using the full sleep system, it's just a malleable little extra piece of fabric you can purpose use to cover whatever bits are still cold.

I used my woobie they way most everyone did in the army, for everything. Now its used for extra insulation when camping, its pretty awesome as an underquilt when in the hammock (no modification necessary).

Vets write the new ones in ACU are worse than the old woodland ones, issued in 'Nam and later, is that true?
They also write to be carefool of fake chineese ones. I'm guessing, if its in woodland and is sold as new, it must be fake?

I have both, the old woodland one is thicker, and is only one ive used in real cold (-10 thru +15) i bought three new ones like the OP pic and they definitely work well but i havent stress tested them. My friend was issued a newer woodland one innastan and he swears by it. Ymmv.

I wouldn't use it solo as a sleeping blanket. Entirely depends on what you're using it for, just in general adding another layer is good.

This is the impression I've always had of them, too. It's a synthetic blanket, there can't be very much special about it. If you already have a warm-weather sleeping bag, it's probably going to be more effective and smaller/lighter in your pack.

I can understand having affection for one if that's all you have, but I fail to see a reason for all the hype. Other things will be able to do the same job (even other blankets - when I was a kid, my mom kept something similar she got from Kmart in her car) and without needing to wear a used piece of camo-colored equipment.

My dad was an ol time infantryman and i grew up to like all the "hoah shit" and personally would have picked 18X/18B active duty as my mos when i enlisted instead of reserve side 68A.

But i understand the value of getting something out of the army i can use civilian side after seeing my dad leave with no real skills to use afterwards.

I do really well as a 68A and i do like what i do, but there will always be the craving to still go out and do crazy shit. When i heard that SERE was technically open to all MOS's i really wanted it, sounded like something id genuinely enjoy but then i heard that anyone outside of aviation/special forces never really get into it and i got a little bummed out, and never really asked about it thinking id be wasting mine and my commanders time.

By the way, I know of these new things that work as actual poncho (that is, as an insulating garment AND a blanket) which apparently the original poncho liner doesn't have. They can also be zipped and corded shut to make a bag rather than a blanket, dunno wether the original can do that.

I think it's pretty overrated and really has become a meme. But then I did spend most of my time at Drum where it could be -10 and our heaters would stop working at night so you needed the proper sleep system. My guess is most people who like the modern UCP poncho liners spent their time in warmer climates.

i think so, i have more than one and have used them for years under many conditions and although not perfect, if i had to start from scratch that would be one of my first purchases.
it would appear for some of the comments on this thread that the "poncho liner" has more than a few detractors. i really can't explain why that would be unless there was something more to their story than they have told.
if all you're looking for is a damn blanket than maybe keep searching, but if you need a versatile/quality piece of /out/door gear. then by all means snag one.

I have mine from when I was in the army. I have always used mine as a sleeping bag liner. When too hot to have sleeping bag zipped up, the poncho liner is great and lightweight. When its freezing cold, the poncho liner insulates your body heat and keeps you toasty.

I always bring mine when camping. It lines my lightweight and heavyweight sleeping bags

Hey, if you want a quality "woobie" go check out the norwegian "jervenduk". It's by far a better one than the american made (inb4 usa usa usa shouts). It's more expensive, but I would recomend it to the ones who can afford it.

One question, does annyone know if I can get a woobie look-a-like in morocco? Would love to know some brands.
