Are teardrop trailers /out/ approved? I have access to all the tools I'd need to build one (including welders).

Should I? I also drive a fullsize truck so I might have other better options.

What do?

The only drawback is no stealth camping. Deal breaker for me.
Spent a cheap vacation last year going up the west coast camping near beaches. Would have cost me a fourune to be in those places legally

A teardrop trailer doesn't make sense for me.

They're really just a raised hard tent that can have air conditioning.

Only they're smaller than a tent. Less portable than a tent, and less versatile than a tent .

If you have a full sized truck, a camper shell, aka truck cap, is cheaper.

Get a truck cap, put in an air mattress, and you've really got the same thing.
>>
>>862118
Theyre stupid.
Kitchen is outside
Shower is outside
Just get a 12 footer...

>>
>>864467

Dude, you ever travel before, or you just retarded? Just driving up and down the coast can be expensive as fuck in just gas alone. Throw in food, tolls, every thing else and it adds up. I did the west coast trip earlier this yr, in just a week I blew close to 600 in gas alone.
>>
>>864608

Same height as you and I slept in them. I found if I slept in them at a angle, I have enough room to sleep in them. So happy my wife is 4'10" or else it would of not worked.
>>
>>864759
gonna feel sorry for your kids though m8.
>>
>>864774

Oh yeah, me too. My mom is only 5'2" and she gave birth to me vaginally. I was born close to 11 pounds, and my mom pushed so hard to get me out, it literally some how bruised her face for two weeks.

When my wife heard how big my siblings and I were when born, she said she was gonna get a c section, lol.
>>
>>864781
nah I mean, there's a solid chance that one will be a manlet.

however, it would mean that they can enjoy your teardrop trailer more than you.
>>
>>862259
Yep, build it nice and light and that is easily doable.
>>
>>862118

Why do you need random members of an internet forum's approval before doing something? If you want to build a teardrop just do it.

Here is a reason, I love to vacation on the california coast but cant afford hotels or even the 75 dollar a night RV lots (which suck anyway) so I park on a nice quiet neighborhood street after dark and close up all my curtains .
No one can see any light.
I am snug as a bug watching the you tubes.
Wake up in the morning and find a nice breakfast place and splurge on steak and eggs because I just saved myself 50 bucks by parking on your nice street that I cant afford to live on.

If youre in AUS then get one thats made there. there are a number of off road trailers to buy there, made for the rough terrain aus has.
I would buy one of the aus off roaders any day before a tiny teardrop.
>>
>>866426

If you think these are the only reasons to stealth camp, that means you prob not get out much, at least to the outdoors. There is a lot of places you're not allowed to camp, or even be at, those places tend to be sweet as fuck places to be.
>>
>>866449
These things, even for the cheap ones, are about $40,000 US. They are insanely expensive.

Just get a pop up camper OP. You can get one for like $1000, and sell in it 3 years for $995. They hold their value if you take care of them. They are warm, dry, and have anything you need. You can tow them with anything and only takes a few minutes to set up. If you want it to be more off road worthy, buy a smaller pop up, flip the axles (more ground clearance), and put on some black steel rims and a meaty off road tire.
>>
>>862118
Seems like you could get a twenty sevenish foot trailer for so cheap used on Craigslist. Why bother all the labor of making one? Just buy a used one in good condition, or fix it up.
>>
>>865460

Pretty much no. Slight bend at the knees and she is set.
>>
>>866623
You can build an offroad trailer for like 2 grand. I did, and it's nicer than those pieces of shit.
>>
>>866437
Please tell more of your stories. I just got a travel position at work, starting December, and I'm doing this. White panel van, because they're everywhere and no one even notices them.
>>
>>867257
If they give you per diem , you are going to make a ton of cash sleeping in the van,
Add a high end 12volt fridge and a camp stove to cook your own food and you really save some cash
>>
>>864781

The bruising is from broken capillaries. Scary story anon, but short waifus are awesome so congrats.
>>
>>866437

You know, I want to make a creepy serial killer van joke, but this actually sounds like a pretty cool setup. Any shots of the interior?
>>
>>866998
2 grand for heat, a/c, hot water, stove, sleeping for 6, towable by a small vehicle, and doesn't look like a POS?

Seriously I'm interested if you have pulled it off, $2K seems cheap. A pop up is awesome for the price though too.

Most caps have a window or 2 that can be opened. Not sure if his does.

You could also install a small fan in the ceiling. Would require cutting a hole in your nice cap though.

You could also Crack a window in the passenger compartment, then open the rear slider. Would allow airflow without exchanging much heat.
>>
>>862118
I would just put a camper shell on your existing truck. You can remove it if you don't want to drive around with it all the time.

All the advantages of a teardrop with none of the hassle.
>>
>>867965
i have two opening windows and a mil-spec desiccant pack the size of a large burrito back there. so far it's stayed pretty dry

They are in my book, I used to be a tent camper until I had a close encounter of the grizzly bear kind, after that I switched to a teardrop trailer for my sleeping accommodations, I can also use the back of my truck too if I don't want to drag the trailer with me, similar to what >>864602 has done in the picture.
>>
>>868751
I saw a story of a guy back in the 70's who did a European trip from the UK to Italy and then on to a bunch of other places and he took the passenger seat out of his Fiat 500 and slept curled up on the floor.... personally I'd get a van/suv or even an old truck and use that instead.

Why not just get a tent. Pop-ups are kind of a pain in the ass to setup. Bears and cougars can rape you during the night and in the end it's just a tent with a solid floor.

A solid walled truck camper similar to pic related would be more /out/. You could go with a commercial truck box shell and build an interior if you wanted to go more stealthy.

Cougars don't go after people in tents. I bet you can't even find one recorded instance of it happening.

Bears can rip a car door off. They can get into houses that are boarded shut. Your no safer in a trailer than a tent.
