>tfw Sara Underwood had no idea how to fish
I'm not even mad. She is a babe, but seems dumb as a box of rocks. I would not want to go fishing with her. She can hang out on the boat topless if she wants but I would prefer to see her when I get home from the lake.

Fuck moving. I'm exhausted. Now I have to take another day off work tomorrow because I'm still not done. Maybe I will be able to get a line wet by Halloween.

Finally my walmart is carrying 8lb triline in green.. One of the small spools (330yrd) but its enough for two reel spools and maybe a leader or two.

This is unrelated to fishing but do any of you hunt? Specifically wild hogs.

I'm in north central Florida and want to get in on it. I've never been hunting and have absolutely no clue where to go, whats legal, what to do, and what licenses I need. I've already googled everything and all I get are confusing & conflicting information.

If anything maybe a recommendation of a WMA within a couple of hours of gainesville

Do you already have a hunting permit? And how far is the green swamp area from you? Turkey's coming up..
>>
>>860113
Wait, what's wrong with swivels in salt? I understand avoiding it in fresh water when you go for small trout or bass on a 4-6lb line, but is it really that important when I use 15-20lb line?
>>
>>860121
Yeah I have my saftey course, hunting permit, and a rifle. I think I'll need to get a 5 round magazine for my AR though before it will be legal to use in WMAs.

Green swamp is about 1 1/2 hours away, definitely doable if it's a good area but my eyes were on Mallory Swamp or Steinhatchee Springs because they're a bit closer.

>>860122
I don't know, I've always used barrel swivels for attaching 1 1/2-2 ft leaders when fishing with live/cut bait and snap swivels for lures like spoons.

I've never really noticed a difference in bite vs not using them but the extra action with snaps & less line tangles for baits are good enough for me to keep using them.
>>
>>860127
Yeah I use a snap swivel and no leader. I saw that sharkman (from YouTube) was not using any leader and still catching giant stripers so I thought why bother.
>>

There's a lake near me that I wanted to start fishing at. Was told there's 5-10lb catfish in there and some decent size bass.

I got a Daiwa Regal spinning reel for like $45 at Walmart and an Ugly Stick GX2 medium action spinning rod for $40, with 10lb braided line.

Did I do good for first rod and reel?
>>
>>860242
What size is the reel and rod?

If you got a medium size (3000-3500) reel, 10lb mono would be good but you could've gone a lil heavier with braid.

Otherwise sounds straight. If you start going for bass a lot with lures, might be nice to get a rod with faster action but Ugly Stiks are good for bait and catfish.
>>
Are there any affordable fishing guides in the Chesapeake Bay area? Been fishing in Virginia all my life but never had the chance to go saltwater fishing. What kind of gear should I get?

Also, are there any good YouTube channels of people who just do average joe saltwater fishing. Every decent channel I find they are on like $500K boats using $3K rod and reel combos fishing shark and other huge fish.
>>
>>860234
Also filter Skid. Now you have a clean fishing thread.
>>
>>860249

Also, could I run my boat with a freshwater outboard in the bay? I don't expect to go out deep, just within a mile or so of the coast line. I don't want to lose visibility of it.
>>
>>860251
And end up with 200 posts, 50 posts asking "How do I into fishing?" and 150 posts of 2 anons complaining about something or other. Quality thread.
>>
>>860249
Google and research some info on saltwater fishing. No need to pay for a guide to dick you around for your money all day.

>>860256
Your boat should be fine if you flush it. I'm from Tampa Florida and my Dad takes his 26' Carolina Skiff CC out in the Gulf a few times a year and it hasn't hurt it's freshwater motor. Just wash off the exterior and flush it after using it. Saltwater fishing can be fun when it isn't too hot and you're fishing with 1 or 2 other people. When you get on a guide service boat with 10-20+ other people, there is no fun in it at all.

I have an old Abu Garcia 5000 that I restored a few years ago.
I love it and it's a great all around reel that I use almost exclusively for salt and fresh water.
This year though it's started to make a loud grinding noise when I cast. Only when I cast.
It started off quite but it's got so loud now that people stare.

Any ideas on the problem?

It's gotta be a bearing, right? Spool is spinninf much faster when casting than retrieving so maybe that is why it is only making noise then.

Bobber fishing vs. spinning lure fishing,
I understand they require different rods, reels and approach.
>>
>>860312
Dammit, just typed a whole thing out that got erased.

You can use one rod for live bait and lures. A medium weight spinning reel with 8lb-10lb line will handle most freshwater lake and river fishing.

Live bait like nightcrawlers on a bobber are great because they are easy to use and tons of different fish will bite them. You can focus more on casting and setting the hook with worms on bobbers and then start with lures when you are comfortable with that.

Inline spinners like Mepps and Rooster Tails are really easy lures to use for beginners. Floating Rapalas and other baits like that too. They have a straightforward retrieve, any predator fish will hit them in lots of conditione, and setting the hook is easy.
>>
wat size swivel should i use for carolina rigging? im on 20 lb braid

>>860314
thank you i'll start with bobbers with live bait
how important is it to have someone show casting, setting the hook, putting together the rig?

is it something you can learn by looking up vidoes/books and practicing?

Youtube videos and practice. You will get it. Palomar knot is easy enough and strong, get that down for tying hooks and everything. Make sure you know how the reel works and casting will be 95% practice.

What kind of bobbers do you have? For nightcrawlers, I just use an aberdeen hook (regular "J" hook) and you want to pretty much use hooks that are just big enough for whatever target fish to get in their mouth. Attach a split shot (weight) 6"-12" above the hook, and then a bobber 12"-24" above the hook depending on the spot you are fishing.

Then wait for bites. If you are getting tons of nibbles, go with a smaller hook and smaller part of the worm to catch the small fish or cast firther out where the larger predators will be lurking. If you don't get any bites in 10-15min, change spots.

And for setting the hook, you want to wait for the fish to really grab the hook. Don't try and set it at every little nibble. When you see the bobber really go under, give it a second or two and then jerk the rod tip to set the hook then start reeling the fish in.

Seems like the Yuros are either fishing salt or they do lots of streams and creeks for freshwater. In the US, there are so many still water lakes and resivoirs and that is really popular. Depends where you are too because trout fishing is popular lots of places but living in the Midwest and now FL I have never caught a trout but there are plety of small lakes with bass and bluegill everywhere. And catfishing is really popular in certain spots too because they have monster blues and flatheads.

So I haven't found any cheap bucktailed Kastmasters and here's my plan:

1oz Kastmaster copies, chrome

1/0 Bucktail hooks, Chartreuse and White

What does anon think? Would this work? Is it an appropriate hook size for the 1oz lure? Thanks.

What fish are you using them for? But when I was first looking at it, I thought 1/0 would probably be better for a 1oz Kastmaster.

You gotta get down on one of those free shipping days if you order from Bass Pro. It's gonna suck to grab a couple $2 hooks and pay $8 for shipping.

>>
>>860625
Sign up for their emails. I know if that one Nascar driver they sponsor does good in a race, they will do free shipping for a day or two. Otherwise they might have free shipping on $25+ for a couple days a month and that would be easy to do.

There is always "ship to store" which is free if you have a Bass Pro nearby but paying the $8 for shipping might be easier than going there.

Just throw them in the icechest whole and alive, they'll die within 10-15 minutes and I've never noticed any quality difference in the meat over any other method.

Only exception is with shark or big catfish, you'll need to cut the end of their tail off and let all of their blood run out before putting them on ice or their meat will taste bad.

Any hardbait with treble hooks will be just as easy to snag as an inline. I always start off new people with a Rooster Tail or Mepps, It's really easy to get good action from them and most of the time you don't even really have to try to set the hook.
>>
>>861036
I kinda have to agree with the other anon. While I was in Canada this spring I brought multiple large pike specific mepps and I would get snagged on rocks almost every other cast. After I switched to a Doctor spoon the hang ups stopped. Not sure what it was that made the mepps more prone to hanging up on the rocks but it was certainly annoying
>>
whats this generals opinion on using live fish as bait?
>>
>>861039
It was probably running deeper than you expected. I agree, they do get snagged a lot if you are fishing shallow spots you don't know well, but not anymore than Rapalas and most stuff with trebles hanging off the back/

Light is good, and depending on the river, a short one. I used a 5' light rod when I used to trout fish. I fished around a lot of trees and had to walk through them once in a while, so a short rod was better, and it's not like you have to cast very far.

I use a 7ft 6" ultralight rod for almost all my trout fishing. It works like a dream. I'm a bank fisherman and I fish the American River, which is very big, so I appreciate the extra range. If you are catching trout mostly under 15" or so, ultralight is the right choice. If you really want to target big specimens or throw lures over 1/4 oz, move up to light instead. Good luck and if you catch any, post 'em here.

I don't really do trout, but to elaborate on what he said >>861090 you don't have to go full UL with 2lb line on a 500 size reel. Lighter combos with ~20/2000 and 4lb/6lb mono or 10lb braid are great for anything from <1/16oz panfish baits to 1/4oz+ baits and medium bass. Before I switched everything to braid, I loved running 4lb-6lb mono for all different stuff.

Idk, sometimes that clear yet stained water they like to hit natural stuff, and sometimes the bright stuff.

My #1 for all conditions is the one on top, natural brown skirt with gold or silver blade. Then if they are going for the bright stuff, yellow skirt and firetiger is about as bright as it gets. And if neither of those are hitting or the water is real murky (or night) the Black Fury is the way to go.

A lot of people are fans of the silver blade with white skirt too, I'm sure that would stand out quite a bit in the brown water. I used to have one with a chartruese blade and brown skirt and loved that thing until I lost it and haven't found another one.
>>
>>861126
I have a PDF of how to clean them, it was the first time I used this method. I used to just cut the head off, pull the guts out, and grill them.
This way gave me boneless fillets that I can freeze instead of having to eat the fish within a few days. The images may be shit quality because I had to take screenshots of the pages.

And I wanted to add, I still haven't figured out exactly when the fish want chartruese. It's strange. I do better with chartruese stuff in clear water than in real murky water. But I think if the water by you is just stained but visibility is pretty good, one of the firetiger blades might be a good choice.

The 3 above should cover like everything. Those gold blades always do work compared to silver, especially when the sun is out and the really bright reflections will freak them out but gold will still show through.

It takes some practice. I found that when you get to the dorsal fin, push your knife through to the other side and complete the cut, then go back until you see the Y-bones and remove that fillet, then slowly cut the rest off with the method where you rake the knife over the rib bones. You should have 5 fillets per fish.

>one moar post with spinners as long as I'm in the garage with my tacklebox

If you have trouble finding bright ass Mepps but the flourescent colors are hitting good, it's really easy to find bright Rooster Tails and those Booyah Pond Magic spinnerbaits.

Not sure what retailers you have nearby, but a handful of the Mepps I either bought online or stocked up on some years back. My local Bass Pro only has like 5 color schemes for Mepps, so if I want something bright from there I can either get a white skirt with a red blade or yellow skirt with a silver blade. I know most Dick's will have the yellow skirt and firetiger blades so that's cool. Bass Pro has these newer metallic firetiger colors which I'm indifferent towards. But Bass Pro also has these silver and gold blades with the natural skirt and black/red paint on the blades which seek to work well.

There's also this new pink blade on natural skirts and I'm not sure what the deal with that is but that #4 has landed a lot of snakeheads and bass.
>>
>>861168

Bass is for faggots. Stocked pond/lakes are for bigger faggots.
>>
>>861168
Gotta find the structure. Dropoffs, weed beds, and areas where creeks or whatever go in and out of the lake. Best bet is dusk or dawn, fish parallel to shore right along a dropoff or just past a weed bed and the bass will be hanging out there waiting for a meal to stray from its hiding spot.

I need help because my googlefoo is failing me. I have a 20 series Skeet Reese carbon Victory reel and can't find a schematic/open it guide and it's baffling me. I've opened over 15 reels and can't figure this bi@tch out.

I would also NOT recommend this reel. Loved it when I got it 5 months ago but it's grinding and hard to turn now. Used to be smooth like butter. I'm probably returning it unless I can get it open and it just needs grease.
>>
>>861178
Did you pay $160 for it?

A few months back, the Victory and their other Carbon reels were on Dick's Flash Sales for $60 off of $160 and I really wanted to get one.

There aren't too many parts in a spinning reel so it can't be that hard to find the issue. I believe those have the ceramic bearings too so hopefully you didn't get sand in there or something.

If all else fails, just email W&M and I bet they could send you a .pdf, Abu did that for me when I was having trouble finding my exact reel on their page of 10,000 schematics.

Yeah definitely email them. If anything it should still be under a 1-year warranty. Maybe you can exchange it in-store for another one or go tell them you paid $160 and get credit towards a nice Shimano.
>>
>>861186
>>861181
That shit is really hard to find a true answer for. Guy from Bass Pro said Abu makes their baitcasters but then I looked into it online and couldn't find an answer.

Are they made in Korea? If they are, then they are probably Pure Fishing which does Abu, Pflueger, Penn, and a bunch of other stuff.
>>
>>861194
Yeah thats what I would guess too. As to what specific manufacturer under Pure fishing makes it? fuck if I know
>>

Well lots of them are made in the same factory by the same people. OE manufacturers or whatever you call them. The same line could be making Abu reels one day, Penn the next, and Bass Pro reels the third. It's interesting. When I was reading up on it, they mentioned how two completely different bicycle companies are made in the same factory.

I can't believe it either. I thought for sure when I showed up at the dudes house there would be something extremely wrong with it. When we went to get the title transferred we ended up drinkin beers and playin guitar until midnight or so.

All I really need to do to get it in the water is rewire the trailer and wire up the batteries. There's other stuff that can be done to it, but it's not 100% necessary. I'll probably work on it a lot this winter if I have time. Of course I'll post pics so y'all can tell me what I'm doing wrong and why I'm retarded.

>>861210
I just really like those 2000 size reels because they feel more natural to use instead of tiny 500-1000 size stuff.

>>861216
Pretty much what other dude said, I will have multiple rods and try 3-4 different baits in the same area to see what they are hitting. Once I start getting bites, I will stick with that one.

Seconded
2k is the size reel I go with most
From my ultralight
To my bass rods
To my lightest salt rod
All 2000 size reels
>>
>>861326
I like my Pflueger President LE 30 because of that. It is a little smaller than mosr 30/3000 size reels. Perfect for 6lb mono or 10-15lb braid. Then I have that Okuma Stratus V 25 which is a tiny bit smaller than the Pflueger and I run 10lb braid on that but 6lb mono would be good on that too. Feels so much better than a 10/1000 size or 30/3000 and I land everything from bluegill to bigger sneks on it.

I want to drive a semi with a 2 stroke diesel but they don't make them anymore because fuckin EPA.

My Waverunner and Seadoo were 2-stroke, it was an 03 and 04 I think so right before they killed em off and I always wanted to drop the 900CC 2-stroke Rotax in a go kart or something. The Yamaha had a bigger one too, 1200cc or some shit.

It actually works bretty well considering the lower RPM if diesel engined and the fact that they are almost all turbocharged anyway.

Those giant engines for cargo ships you see on TV that are 3 stories tall, those are normally 2-stroke and I think maybe supercharged? Could be turbo.

Literally snook heaven. Don't use a kastmaster like skid said since you can easily loose them if the fish swims around a pole and they aren't cheap. Get some cheap soft lures like stormies or zooms.

Give it a shot.

Snook are the perfect "transition" fish for freshies going saltwater fishing for the first time especially for people like Pepsi that want to use lures instead of bait. They love a lot of the same lures bass like, they make a lot of jumps and you can use your bass rod. You literally don't have to go out and buy anything new to catch them. I bet you anything you have a ton of Zoom flukes right? Put some white ones on a jig head and just cast along the wall at dawn or dusk.

Because freshies are always salty.
>>
>>861689
Too name a few off the top of my head Id say:

1. square bill crank (in a color you think would imitate the food in the water local to you)

2. Spinner bait (white, chartreuse, or black/blue if water is really stained)

3. lip less crank bait (chrome, or same as square bill)

4. senkos/trick worm/yum dingers with some 4/0 ewg hooks get slide weights if the water is deep

5. frog with a white/eggshell bottom

6. zara spook

7. gambler big ez swim bait/zoom flukes/keitech impacts with 4/0-5/0 1/8th oz swim bait hook with the little screw lock at the top of the hook
>>
>>861705
senkos are the ultimate meme worms. Yum dingers are a little bit stiffer but at least they won't become useless after catching a single fish.
>>
>>861698
>storm swim shads
I'd 2nd this and add Storm eel-like things. I crushed spring striper migration with these.
>>
>>861705
they all work the same for me so thats why I just put all three
>>
>>861689
Zoom 6" lizard in chartreuse pepper, any stick bait, chatterbait, spinnerbait, shallow crank, some kind of jerk bait, a craw imitator (I like yum's designs), and a hollow body frog. I would base the color off of the water conditions you'll likely be fishing in.
>>
>>861687
Yum crawbug. It isn't always the best but if you find a place where the bass are in "crawdad mode", it will kill.
Yum dinger is pretty much a senko for 1/3 the price, I use the 4" ones and they do their job.
I can't think of any other "must haves". What type of water do you generally fish, that influences the lures you will want.

I like these a lot but sometimes I have problems with them wanting to stay upside down. I think what happens is air gets trapped in the little opening and makes them not stay upright.

Fishing clear water
>>
get out wind REEEEEEEEEEEEE

yak fishing in wind is so shitty.
>>
>>861678
I usually just go into the sawgrass backwater.
Don't know if you've got much of it there compared to florida, but find bends and structure and just back your yak into the grass to hold you still. Cast out some bait or just paddle along slowly throwing artificials along the edges.

Yaks are fine for the flats too though. I'll usually go out with the outgoing tide and get 1.5-2 miles out and come back in with the incoming, although I highly suggest against that if you aren't an experienced paddler with a VHF radio you could use if you drifted out too far or got into trouble somehow.
>>
>>861746
Drag chains save my life during winter months with high wind. Getchu one.

>>861698
I got one of these in a lure box my family bought me. Thought it looked interesting but I never touched half the stuff because I don't fish freshwater, although now I might give it a go for some trout or redfish.
>>
>>861165
I should add that when I cut the top part off, there were no bones that I could see. I might not have gone deep enough or something, but I got a nice fillet anyway. I could feel my knife clicking on bones, but I cut the center part on one as the PDF says and there weren't any bones, I just ruined a perfectly good fillet.
