For all of you who doesn't know what geocaching is. It's basically a scavenger hunt that you use a GPS (or your phone) to find hidden "geocaches" that your community members have hidden for you to find! Download the App or go to the website and try your hand at it if you haven't already!

Getting a presentation on GPS use together. Want to cover the basics, clear up some of the confusion people have with it and go over some of the acronyms people find confusing. 1-hour presentation.
Feedback is welcome.

Things i'm covering, in the general order i'm covering them:
>GPS System: Quick summary of how it works, who's in charge.
>Other systems: GLONASS, Beidou, Galileo, but focusing on US's GPS
>3 pieces to get a fix: Almanac, Ephemeris, Time; why it takes 15-minutes to get a cold-fix, and why phones are faster (download almanac/ephemeris from network)
>Sources of error: SA, Multipath, Constellation/HDOP
>Spheroid/Datum - "Shape of the surface", and why it's important when using a map
>Increasing accuracy with more data: WAAS/EGNOS, AGPS, adding other country's systems
>Probably touch on GPS-receiver vs. Phone - Screen size, network, software/apps, mounting options/durability
>Receiver basics - It knows where it is, what now? Explain routes, waypoints, tracks
>Augmenting that with mapsets - POI's, birds-eye/raster images
>UNITS! Decimal degrees vs. DMS, MGRS, etc. "Like feet vs. inches", different ways to describe a point in space
>Using GPS "in the field" - Magnetic vs. true north with a compass and map, degrees vs. cardinal directions
>With a map, making sure the datum is the same (WGS84, NAD27, etc)
>Touch on some of the advanced/computer features - download to Google Earth
>Some things to keep in mind when shopping for a GPS - features like external micro-SD storage, mounting options, map compatibility (OpenStreetMap, OEM)
>Other devices that use GPS - SPOT/PLB, Garmin Rino radios
>Leave some time for Q&A at the end

Every time I think of getting into geocache'ing I remember these threads, and just how /out/-unsavvy most everyone who does it as a hobby really is. Maybe someday I'll get into shitting in them since every goddamn time I do something /out/ related I have to shit.
