BC born here, been slowly working on a personal project documenting relatively obscure locations, ruins, derelict buildings, ghost towns, mines, cave systems, waterfalls, and other finds in southwestern Canada, currently spanning coastal BC to Crowsnest Pass, AB. Dumping some of my favorites from the last couple years of exploring.

Carolin Mine, the most popular of the Coquihalla Gold Belt mines, and for good reason, easily the most remarkable place I've ever been. Commercial use of the property is unpredictable, I've visited without running into anyone 4 times in the last 2 years, but for the last 2 months the FSR up to the mine has been blocked and New Carolin Gold is now actively drilling.

Middle floor. None of this shitty graffiti was here last year, a couple of highschoolers found the place in early 2016, brought some neon paint, and went to town all over the inside and outside. When I found the place in 2015 it was still untouched and full of original supplies, a mattress and some candles in the bottom floor, a bookshelf that bordered the entire wall holding dozens of books on survival, conservation, horticulture, music, and some woodsy fiction. Since the vandals found it I believe the original builder has withdrawn all of his belongings, very few books remain, the mattress and all of the cleaning supplies are gone. A damn shame, but nothing this incredible lasts in the woods unless it's remote enough that nobody else will find it for decades to come, this place is only a 10 minute hike from a paved country road.

Should clarify that the upper floor ceiling is not vandalism, it has been like that since I found it and I'm pretty certain the builder painted the attic like that. It's all the bullshit on the walls and windows that the vandals left behind.

The one you're quoting is in southern British Columbia but I'm sure it's a pattern in the US as well. Out here most of the ruins I find are gold rush related, abandoned settler's cabins, abandoned mines, abandoned powerplants and coal processing buildings. So many towns in the late 1800s and early 1900s built themselves upon faith in gold claims, many of them turned out to be built on lies, many claims turned out to be duds, and when the price of gold dropped people literally just packed up their shit and chased a new life somewhere else. No reason for outsiders to move into a boom town if the claims surrounding it are useless.

As for abandoned homes in residential areas, I really don't know. I know the US experienced this on a massive scale with Detroit but I don't know the story behind it or the economic reasons why.

The mountains of British Columbia are full of abandoned cabins, hunters and trappers built them wherever the fuck they wanted, nowadays they serve as free campsites/shelters for hikers and snowmobilers.

Abandoned houses near any urban centers don't last long out here. In fact this afternoon I spotted two from satellite view (imagery dated 2016), jotted down their coordinates, went to check them out after work, and both were completely demolished and the land cleared for resale.

>>856617
how terrifying it is to get in the front door. The ladder from the ground only goes halfway, the next half up to the front door requires you to climb a rope hanging freely 25 ft above the ground. I didn't climb up and into the house myself until my 3rd visit and with a bit of liquid courage in my belly.

The vandals didn't even bother trying, this is actually the worst damage they did, they brought a saw and cut a body sized hole into the lowest floor to climb up into (pic related).

Looks a lot like Carolin Mine doesn't it, it's the old Hell's Gate highway tunnel, hidden in the trees next to the new one. Fraser Canyon, not Fraser Valley.

I don't think you could take a picture anywhere in Carolin Mine without a pipe or some sort of debris in the background (pic related).

Nope, the most I've found out about my land is that it used to be an old scrapyard, and I've found some large chunks of rusted out riveted steel and a ton of prohibition era whiskey bottles.

The dates on the bigger one are mid-1800s if I remember correctly. The smaller one was completely unreadable.

Even stranger is that they're right next to a river. This pic is basically a 180 of the last one

Wouldn't happen to be related to the Twelve Tribes would it? They have a reputation out here in the valley but I'm pretty sure they've only had their commune set up here for under 10 years. I have a hard time imagining them having anything to do with this treehouse. They're a straight up hippy cult but if it was them there would have been religious literature mixed in with the rest of the library that used to be up there.

Whoever built and occupied the treehouse was definitely a hippy of some sort, the huge library of hippy literature and mandolin songbooks he had up there was more than enough evidence.

standing 16 cm tall with mass of 2.2 kg, volume aprox 800 cc.

Photo is by UER user Darkzero, he also runs the Facebook page British Columbia Ghost Mines which is probably the most complete resource online for abandoned mines in the province. I read the other day that he got that picture using "light painting" where you leave the exposure open for a few seconds and shine your flashlights over as much surface area in the cavern as possible before the shutter closes. Before I read that the only way I could imagine them getting much light into the mine was by hauling in high powered flood lights.

It's extremely difficult to take photos inside abandoned mines, it's the darkest dark you've ever seen, eyes wide open for half an hour straight and they won't adjust, just pure darkness in all directions. When I walked into that massive cavern the first time my stomach dropped to my fucking toes, the light from my dinky little automotive mechanic headlamp could barely reach the far walls. It's absolutely mind boggling to be there in person, exploring Carolin Mine is a vivid memory you will have for the rest of your life, it's an absolute MUST for any BC locals (but unfortunately it's active again and completely blocked off from public access for the time being).

>>862328
I wish I knew. The picture is from the abandoned Greenhill Mine site in Blairmore, AB, taken earlier this month. I have seen mine buffs comment on those massive chains/tracks online before but I can't remember what they said.

Today I came across an old Ford Bronco in the woods. Tt's sitting on what used to be a logging or fireroad, but it's all eroded and overgrown now. Nobody lives on this plot of land, so I have no idea who owns the land or whose truck it is. The inspection sticker on the windshield is from 2002. The area directly behind the Bronco is littered with tattered trash and beer cans that look like they've been there for several years. Spoop'd me right the fuck out when I saw it brooding over me.

It could be somebody that decided to dissappear and live off the land. Is it in national forest land?
>>
>>863224
no it's on private property. there's a fairly large forest (for being in a town that is) that's probably 2000 acres or so. it's divided into several plots of private land, about half the plots have a house on them (on one of the encircling roads) and half don't have any houses on them. this is just sitting on one of the plots that has no house, and there's absolutely no access from the street (forest is way too thick, ledgy, with a swamp out front) so it must have been driven-in from an adjacent property. i didn't try to follow the logging road further to see where it goes or if it leads to one of the other plots.
>>
That is kinda weird. you would think if they were off road in and broke something. They would have recovered it by now. You don't just abandon a good trail rig.

I found an old orange crush bottle that i really like for some reason. Was noodling with friends. They making fu because im not fighting a 50lb. snapping turtle and yall can fuck off. Then i had to get balls deep in a beaver damn to get the bottle. Dad found a pretty legit arrowhead worth roughly 500-800 bucks if he sold. Meh. Not much. My wifes grandfather died recently though an was a historian and a "collector" of anything and everything. We may be able to purchase it once the family sells all of the machinery that has use or value. I'll post pics somewhere on the 4chins if interest and for q&a so we can find anything of value thats not sentemental to my wife. Not kidding here. There is like 8 houses and 3 barns on a s acre lot he moved in there and packed wall to wall with cool old shit. There is over 80 chainsaws hanging in one. One house is gutted and houses like 50 old push mowers. I counted maybe 20 or so mostly together forest gump style snapper mowers. 1200 hand saws. 1200. Legit he counted them. Pretty much my dream house. Im gonna have a lot of fun going through it all. And i think he'd appreciate us continuing his legacy. I'm not muchbof a historian and don't ecen talk to half of my family. But i will make copies of all his works and digitize it as well. Really wish i took some pics the other day when we went out. It's pretty much a pickers wet dream out there.

More than likely the graves were not buried in a concrete or metal vault, so they are completely gone by now. The only thing you'd fine if you dug them up would be any metal parts of the casket, like the handles.

Most of all mines have rotted to nowdays.I'd found anti-infantary and anti-tank mines and they would be dangerous only if I put them in fire, however 20-25 years ago you may initiate mine if you step on it. We have a bunch of ol' bridges like that around me (mostly bridges on a train line that has been defunct about 100 years). They're slowly turning the entire rail line into a 100+ mile bike path, so they're rehabilitating all the the bridges along the way. It's a really cool project. about 40% is done but not all the section connect yet. When it's done you should be able to ride from Upstate New York through to Boston entirely on the rail trail!

Breddy much. You could also scope out satellite maps around areas of interest and look for peculiarities. Check different maps (google, bing, mapquest, etc) because sometimes the pics are in summer and sometimes in winter/fall. You can obviously see more when it's not summer. ALSO, the bird's eye view on bing really brings the 3rd dimension out, pic related.

Some pics from Beartown State Forest in Monterey, MA.

Remains of an old structure. There apparently were rough roads going all through here ~125 years ago, judging from the old structures and some an old spoked wheel I found.

The woods in this area are mostly hemlock and other such trees that indicate clear-cutting at some point.

Leaky old water tank closer down to the railroad tracks. Has a newer overflow pipe with the painted-on lettering still readable, plus it's always overflowing when I visit it, so it appears still be in service for some reason. Feed by an old 6" cast iron inlet pipe. The pipe at right of pic is the old outlet pipe, same material, but got way heaved up and busted up over the years.
