I want a good watch for going /out/ but i don't know where to start.

Wants
>sleek simple design easy to understand in any condition
>durable in tough environments
>does not need frequent charging or battery replacements

Optional
>compass
>barometer
>altimeter
>some sort of gps thing? I dunno...battery...

i wanted a GPS watch too until i realized they had to be recharged every ~3 days. then i got the:
casio protrek PRW-3500-1CR
>solar charging never have to change batteries
>compass to know where the fuck you're going
>altimiter to know how high you are
>barometer / rapid pressure change alarm to be warned if a storm is coming
>atomic timekeeping always accurate
>waterproof to 200 meters
>looks bretty cool
>sunrise/sunset time display
>all your other standard digital watch features
>>
>>855634
I use a Casio protreck. It's solar powered, has an electronic compas, barometer, altimeter, thermometer. Several alarms, stop watch, atomic time keeping and shit like that.

I prefer the Timex to the Casio, but honestly they are both the same thing.

I have both the silver and the black, my brother has the gold. It exudes 80's charm and it got damn bullet proof as a watch. Time, date, day, alarm, stopwatch, Indiglo for easy effortless reading anytime and the battery lasts for years. They are 30 bucks.

I wear auto's because i'm a watch snob. Automatic movements are fragile though, relatively speaking. Innawoods, i usually wear my SNZG13j, or my Glycine Combat Sub.
If you want something really robust get a g-shock.

SNZG13 is a nice budget auto field watch, if you want auto.

Mallard Combat Edition
Pros
>100% stainless steel
>sapphire glass
>screw down crown adding water resistance
>screw on back adding further water resistance
>water resistant 100 meters
>American made
>has additional clasp to go over the first one, ensuring it stays on your wrist
>very durable
>very dependable
>has a lifetime warranty (I think)
>each one assembled by hand
>$150
Cons
>nothing fancy
Each one is hand assembled in Kansas City at Jules Borel & Co. Dude I bought mine from has had one in his shop in a jar of water for 2 years and it's still going. Said that a farmer lost his in a cow field for 6 years, found it somehow and had it dried out and had a new battery put in, and said it worked like new.
They can be found online at sites like this one. Highly reccomend this watch.

I would guess it would be relatively ok depending, you have to account for your own body heat. unless you wear your watch outside of your snow gear

>>
>>855782

I've had one of these for years and can vouch for it being awesome. I like to hike out here in Colorado where the weather can change rapidly, and the storm watch has helped me before when I was on a 14er. It's surprisingly light for as big as looks.

>>856274

I wear mine skiing and haven't had any problems. I dunno about full exposure for hours (it's inside my sleeve are under part of my glove most of the time), but I think it would hold up. I've worn it many times for a whole day out and never had a problem. The thermometer can get wonky and read your body temp. (I'm fairly certain it's not 96 degrees on the mountain) but honestly I rarely use that function anyway. Not gonna lie, I'm clumsy as hell and gotten snow, ice, mud, etc. in the sensors and such and it still works perfectly.

Threadly technology reminder that

>The more gimmicks your shit has

>The less skills you have.

Technology dumbs you down.

I have picrelated because it ONLY tells the hour, plus chrono, timer etc...

I pack a compass in the backpack IN CASE I get lost and it'll always be more accurate than the watch.

All the technologies that will save you effort in learning something or acquiring some skill will always make you not learn and forget skills.

I love this watch. I've only had to change the battery once in the 11 months I've owned it, and I can say that's because
>A. it was a display model
>B. I had the storm alarm on since I bought it

It's been incredibly comfortable and rarely gets caught on clothing - Only time it does is when I want it to like in pic. Has a lot of nifty features I really don't use, but it's been worth it. TFW the only time I had to replace the battery was right as I arrived at my camp site.

The Sunnto Core has been pretty rugged for me, there's been times where I've knocked it against rocks / steel and thought it would crack but there's been nothing catastrophic yet. I will say that the Low Battery icon is a bit subdued, I never noticed it until the watch was already dead, but again that may have been because I was leeching the battery so fast having the storm alarm on 24/7. There's been minor wear and tear on the paint but I feel that's to be expected from any watch that's painted black.
>>
>>860370
And you can tell me from your vast experience what operators wear in country?
I can tell you that I've seen both used, the problem with the fenix is you need to charge it with it's snowflake charger, i own both a fenix 1 and 2, I've used them extensively they are pretty rugged, but they are a little pretty for field work. And i solve the charging problem by having a 5590 scavenger in the field

I use a Garmin Vivofit 2. they have newer models including ones with a heart rate monitor but i think this one is perfect. doesnt look too bad, isnt bulky, battery lasts about 10months with active use, waterproof unlike fitbits, tracks your steps and mileage which is useful when on trails to know where youre at based off of distance, and ties into your phone when theres signal available to make pretty accurate mileage and height gained measurements

My only thing is the latch sometimes gives if you pull too hard on it cause it is all rounded. Just have to check every once in a while to make sure its still locked.
