Let's post some pictures of our recent /out/ings!
Mt. Yamnuska, Alberta.
Small cave system just off the trail. Photo is looking up from the bottom.
An hour or two away from the summit at this point. I only took a few photos of this hike but the cloud cover and fog made visibility absolutely brutal later on.

This was in Kansas a couple of weeks ago as I was passing through. Managed to stay in front of it the whole time.
Just got back from my 14 hour drive from Colorado. First time looking through my SD card for the month that I was there, so I'll crop and post a few I think are interesting.

Reposting with a photo where I'm actually smiling.
Wouldn't normally go into a situation with visibility that poor but we were near the summit and figured we could make it.

why do they pile rocks like that?
does it mean something?
>>847889
Yeaaa 'Berta represent
You can almost see Yamnuska in the background here.
>>848012
I'm not really into that habit myself so I'm not sure what it's about. I think they just put one rock every time they're up there, and over time you see if it gets any bigger. I saw a larger pile of rocks in another place.
>>848013
Where is this? I'm visiting Alberta soon (live in MT), looks amazing.

Mt. Sparrowhawk
>>848314
Heard that the climb is steep as hell for Sparrowhawk and that weather conditions can really get tough near the top. True or no?
>>848323
It's a bit steep but if we can get bikes up there hiking shouldn't be an issue ;) It's pretty much fully rideable from the top. Weather conditions can change pretty quickly on any mountain especially when they get over ~3000m like this one.

Another one of Yamnuska. Pretty nasty drop if you were to slip off the chain
>>848727
you guys had a chain. envy you
>>848829
Chain is more of a recent addition according to some articles. You used to have to scale the ledge without any type of assistance beforehand. Not sure if you'd die from the drop at the highest point but your ankles and shins would snap and it'd be a nasty ride down the scree slope below with a pretty good drop at the end of that.
Aiming to do all the notable mountains here in Alberta with Mt. Columbia as the final one. Long ways to go yet.

You seem pretty exposed in that picture, where is it? It would be a pretty sleepless night if you were to do that where I'm from.
>>849886
Well, yeah -- not me picking the site, but to be honest , it's more or less the only flat spot for quite some distance.
We had a near gale during the following afternoon, and it got quite loud inside the large tipi; nothing to worry about though, plenty of rocks and tie-outs.
It's at Degevatn, South-west Norway:

Where are you? Looks a lot like my home.
Comet Falls itself.
Did San Jacinto Peak last week from the idyllwild side. It's shorter than coming from the tram but with twice the elevation gain it's a work out if you're like me and spend more time shitposting than hiking. View from the top is amazing, although it's nowhere near as good as it would be if it weren't for all the shitty suburban sprawl you see. I have a few more pics but they're nowhere near good enough to dump.
>>849867
Why is that a perk to you?
>>847945
Is that on highway 400?
>>847889
Alright I'm gonna dump all the ones from my two week trip I just came back from, lets see if you guys can guess where I I took these pictures.

It only looks like this for two weeks, then goes back to being golden brown for the rest of the year.
Yesterday i got bored so i packed an ultralite kit and took my bike up into the mountains.
I biked for about an hour then i ducked off the road into the mountains.
I hopped a fence and stashed my bike in the trees, then hiked about an hour up the mountain and made a hidden campsite (it was illegal to even be there, let alone camp or light a fire). In fact it was so well hidden that i went for a walk and it took me 30 minutes to find it again.
I dug a 3 foot deep dakota pit and made my fire, the flames barely reached over the top.
I read the first 30 or so pages of the stranger, had a cigar, and then went to bed with this view.
I woke up and biked home.
Because i was biking i didnt bring a sleeping bag or tent, just knife, shovel, hatchet, tarp, serape, food, and some misc.
The serape is great because you can wear it and then sleep in it.
Colorado is gr8. You can get into complete wilderness on one side of the mountains, and get this view on the other.

I went out there in the beginning of summer, took this route up this mountain.
No trails at all though. I went along the side of the dunes by the river for a while, then climbed the first mountain. From there I dropped back into the woods and got lost, so I climbed this 40 foot tall 5.9ish spire and got a good look at where I was. I went straight up the avalanche chute to the top.
At this point it was like 4pm and it was hailing, and I was super unprepared. I only brought like 2l of water because I diddent expect to actually climb it but I did anyway. I melted snow into my bottle but after that I went like 35 hours without water. Bad dehydration sucks anus.
I went down the backside of the mountain into this aspen forest along a river, it was quite beautiful. I followed that until I got out into the desert and made my way to the edge of the dunes.
At this point woods panic set in and I could no longer tell the dunes from the mountains. I wandered for a little, then decided I was fucked and bedded down. I went on the dunes because there were a ton of snakes in the desert. I shoved my head into my backpack and my hands into my pants and shivvered all night. I had these crazy astral projection dreams where I was walking around on the dunes meeting spanish ghosts. It was strange. I got maybe 3 hours of sleep overall.
I woke up at 5am, and because the only checkpoint I had was the mountains I headed towards them.
From there I had a clear view of the mountains that the campground nestles against, so I decided to cross the entire dunefield.
I walked for about 8 hours to cross the entire thing. I fell over a lot, and sometimes I just sat down and thought about water for a little.
I got back to the touristy section by the river, and I remember seeing the first humans, these 2 college girls.
The enthusiastically asked "Did you climb the high dune?" and I let out this raspy croaking noise and fell down a hill.
>tldr;do what you plan to do.
>>851051
The looks you get from serious cyclists when youre riding a 2000 dollar bike in baggy jeans with a backpack is priceless.
>>851064
So am I.
I once went 3-4 days without food in the san juans but that was because I went for a walk and a bear was rummaging when I got back, and when it saw me it ran off with my food bag.
It was literally a 20 minute walk, but since then I always hang it up, not just overnight. Starvation is preferable to dehydration though.
The sand dunes situation was different, I thought I was going for a day hike and I just kept going for some reason. I reached the top and I had this brief moment of happieness before I had the dreaded fuck me moment.
Your other reply was also to me, and yes, the serape is king. My dad slept on the beaches of Belize and mexico windsurfing in between college and law school, and he would just go on the sand with a serape.
He passed 3 down to me, theyre all nicely made and have animal shapes on them. The one in that pic was deer, the other 2 are turtles and armadillos.
>>851065
Happen to know where to get a good serape?
The worst I've done is to start dayhikes too late, so I've had somewhat less impactful fuck-me moments. Hiked down a mountain after dark (thank goodness there was a full moon but I still lost the trail at one point and was trying not to panic). Tweaked my back last weekend when I was walking in the dark on a very wide trail and it was unexpectedly unlevel; hope it's not serious.
>>851069
Ive never bought one, just google for it and make sure it wool.
I just googled and theyre like 200 bucks, holy shit.
Mine are probly worth like 500-1000 each considering their quality and uniqueness.
And to think ive been dragging them around in the woods so much. I would never sell them though.
I would say your best bet is go down to mexico and get some woman to make it for you, or just find a super ragged wool blanket and cut a whole in it.
And walking in the dark blows. Ive ran into a shitload of fences in the dark. I can move around for days without seeing one, and then i walk 200 feet in the dark and run into a 200 foot long fence in the middle of nowhere.
And theres nothing close to legit woods panic. When you think you know where landmarks are and suddenly your mental map no longer matches the things you see because you cant see shit.
People will exhaust themselves by wandering around all night looking for what theyre looking for. After 30 minutes its best to just bivy and tough it out until you can see where you are.
>>849867
It has its own charm.
>go camping
>realize after that the group I'm camping with is insane and wants to walk 16 miles per day from sun up to sun down
>leave after 2 nights
Why do people do this? I like walking, but I also want to explore and see things and enjoy myself. At one point, we were camped at spot called Twin Lakes but since we got there at dusk and left at dawn, no one had a chance to see either lake. That was the point I said "fuck this" and stayed behind to sight see and hike back.
>>851579
Thru camping is retarded and I really can't get my head around it. Why take a vacation and then put that kind of time restraint on yourself? Go from having a lovely time /out/ to having to sweat about hitting every campsite at the right time or be that dick/ group of dicks who comes in late and sets their shit up after dark.
And then after you get done with the hike you have to figure out some logistical nightmare of how everyone gets back to their cars when the trail head half the group parked at is 20+ miles away.
It just doesn't make sense.
>>851583
Yeah, it started to feel like an anti-vacation. Everyone was popping caffeine-loaded snacks to keep themselves going. Why do that do yourself?
>>851586
some people just treat the outdoors like a huge gym
>gotta burn those calories breh
I find it annoying to go with those people too, specially when skiing and they want to build up a sweat in the middle of winter..

Timberlands. I think they're winter ones because they have a faux Sherpa lining.
>>852057
Nice, thank you! Do you remember how long the break in period was?
>>852083
I got them for Christmas last year from my girlfriend so it's a little fuzzy but I do remember distinctly that the section where the leather tongue attaches to the boot rubbed my foot bad enough that I actually took some scissors and trimmed the leather back a bit until it didn't bother me anymore.
As for the break in period, they're Timbs. They're nothing like the pairs of Redwings I've owned. Modern insole and lining that's comfy. Just wear them around for a week and you'll be fine
>>852086
Great! Thank you so much. Been thinking of getting some hiking boots that can do the job and still look good.

>>858287
Well I live in southern France along the Mediterranean, population density is actually rather high, pic related civilization wasn't far and a lot of my walk was in vineyards. But sometimes in between two hills it felt isolated enough and really quiet
And anyway there are proper mountains not far and I'm 1h30 away from the least populated place of the whole country so I don't complain. Having been to Germany I'll admit you guys have it worse than us, except in some places in northern France along the Belgian border where it's really crowded
