What type of dogs are best for outdoor activities? I want a dog that can go on hikes with me. My family has 2 but they both are small dogs the can't go on long walks.

huskies are a great choice for anywhere that isnt desert. they will walk/run tirelessly and require very little maintenance. the drawback is that most of them MUST be on a leash/lunge line when camping or they will run off never to be seen again.

the best way to avoid that issue is to start them on offleash training as young as possible, but even still i'd keep him/her on a 30ft lead when you set up camp for the night
>>
>>844764
Do huskies got a bad homing instinct or something?
>>
>>844769
no, they just lose their god damn minds when they get loose. they have a high prey drive and can sustain speeds of 30mph for hours.

they're a very defiant breed. often times they will blatantly ignore you. they require very strict training or a very vigilant owner.
>>
>>844495
Yellow/golden lab
Didn't you get the brochure?
The american dream is 2.5 kids, white picket fence and a yellow lab.

But seriously, its a good all around dog.
Besides guard duty. Because petting beats looting in their minds.
>>
>>844786
they tend to get cold during winter activities though, around here you need a fairly thick coated dog for winter camp trips.

labs are great other than that, damn shame most people let them get obese
>>
>>844781
Oh.
>>
>>844764
>>844781
well then, sounds like huskies would make the absolute shittiest choice for what OP is looking for.
>>
>>844495
How old are you and what's your height, different breads respond to different ages and heights
>>
>>844795
Not him, but 23 and 186cm, curious what if anything that would mean in relation to dawgs
>>
>>844791
they're fine if you keep them in check. it's almost impossible to get them cold, and they do fairly well in heat as long as you dont live in arizona. their coats stay fairly clean and are low maintenance, and they have nearly unlimited endurance. they also require very little food.

if raised from puppyhood to be an offleash dog, odds are you could trust one to hang out around your camp, but dont adopt an adult thinking he/she will be easy to train.

i'm not trying to sell them as being the best dog for the job, but they are a solid contender.
>>
>>844495
>>844799
Little dogs will fuck your shit up. Stay away from anything that ends up with 'terrier'. Fuckers have the manlet syndrom and will defy you forever.

However, you'll fall in love with them and they'll make you their bitch. 184 here and my pupper is an 14 year old rat terrier. Keep away from them.

Get a mixed breed bro. Keep away from huskies. Srs. You are going to be sorry within a week. Labs are bro tier. Same as boxers.
>>
>>844806
Huh, well I'll keep that in mind. Thanks anon.

I like Australian cattle dogs.

Smart, loyal and stubborn.

They also avoid some of the interbreeding problem because they are slightly less domesticated. This is due to having some wild Dingo in them mate .They can have knee problems when older however.
>>
>>844851
>having anything strayan in the house
Yeah, no, thanks
>>
>>844861
They are also cute and live very long lives.
>>
>>844786
Labs require to much attention as they'll eat anything and even posion themselves.

>>
>>844877
I prefer human centipedes.
>>
>>844788
>>844869
Yes.

So try a "full size" (normal actual breed standard not a terrier that look like) poodle.
Yes I said poodle. Research that shit.
Its like a rottweiler and a Labrador had an AKC baby.
>>
>>844764
>require very little maintenance. the drawback is that most of them MUST be on a leash/lunge line when camping or they will run off never to be seen again.

Have two malamutes and not ideal for the outdoors, unless by outdoors you mean the Alaskan wilderness. If not, then unlike other dogs they're stubborn and must be kept on a leash if around sheep, horses, cows etc as they will naturally run towards a larger animal to shoe it away from the group or run after a smaller / similar size animal to either kill or play (my two have eat countless rabbits).

A border collie would be better as they don't need to be only leash and will listen to you instead of having to tie down two big dogs down on a line wherever you go.

exactly. though they're good breeds when fully grow if you're lazy. mine pull me around big farm fields and woods all day. though wouldnt recommend till theyre +2yrs old.
>>
>>844764
is it true that a husky can die of overheating when running in >60 degree weather?
>>
>>844788
why not a golden retriever then?
they don't get cold and they are cuter and less crazy compared to labs
>>
>>844919
Yup. been known to die of heat stroke in Scotland if the owner hasnt prepared for heat and brushed their summer coat away fully. Not ideal unless you live in a cold climate. Could have strangled a man i saw with a husky pup in florida.

It does get upto 26-28C in the summer in for long periods but if you live somewhere that gets hotter you're basically torturing them. Mine have a pool (big plastic former dog bed) to splash in and a cool shed in a perma-shaded area in the garden.

Might just be my opinion but I'd say either a German shepherd or that Aussie cattle dog are best in terms of travel companions. Some of the most loyal breeds and if raised from puppies they will protect you and your sleeping place with all they have
>>
>>844851
I had an blue heeler like pic, he was stubborn as fuck, but loyal and he lived to about 16. I definitely agree with the knee problems, but he was hit by a car when he was a pup so that may not have helped.
>>
>>844495
a lot of the "best" dogs for the outdoors are known to be darters, hearders, and dominant.

what you want is the best dog for you. any midsize dog can be an amazing hiking partner. just go to the shelter and ask for a dog with a warm disposition that can go off leash.

Goldens are notorious for having REALLY bad skin issues.

Chesapeake bay retriever is a good dog for a single person going /out/. Also good for families, but they're typically one person dogs- get them as puppies and they'll be yours for life. Downside- they shed 12 months a year.

A blue heeler or heeler mix can be amazing dogs. Black labs are great too. Avoid hunting breeds. They're stubborn and difficult to train. I have a yellow lab mixed with some sort of deer dog and she's as stubborn as a mule.
>>
>>844925
I want a dog for a long time now, but I'm not sure how well it works if I'm still in University and have to stay there the whole day.

I actually could get a Border Cullie for free from my uncles farm, they get whelps every year.
Are they good for maybe even 2-3 week long hikes in German Alps climate?

back in the day they were breed to be the best, toughest and strongest police dogs.
they dont get sick, they dont get tired and they are really intelligent.

loved him, spend weeks out with him.
i was a cub scout leader and he was always with us.

he passed away in his sleep 2004 at the age of 15. he never showed a sign of being old.

Collies in general are great loyal dogs, around kids especially, a hiking holiday would be a easy day out for a scot collie though they do need a lot of walking through out the year. Same with all breeds bred to work desu, unless you get them plenty of bones to chew on while at class.

The rest of us believe it's the one you leave at home.
Hey, if you're on your own land go for it. If you are on any public land at all bear in mind every other person there doesn't like your dog, doesn't want to hear it barking, get licked by it, etc.

Leave it at home if you are going /out/ where other people will be.
>>
or a good dog from a shelter. Though there are so many types of german shepherd out there, you might wanna look into they before getting one, but defenetely better than huskies if you're not making them pulling you though the ice

Everyone here in my part of Montana has a lab or an unidentifiable mutt, and they take them absolutely everywhere. Unless you own a casino, then you have a pit.
>>
>>846026
I would never want a pit.

I was at the county animal shelter a year or two ago because my mom wanted a car and like 80% of the dogs there were pitbulls. So many dumb nigs get their tough dog for a year and they all end up at the shelter.
>>
>>846031

Absolutely. I had a dumb exgf who got a pit as a pup without knowing what is was. They're a commitment that most people are unwilling to make. Nobody kept up with training her after I left (I couldn't take her where I moved), and she was euthanized less than a year later.

I had a Dalmation when I was younger and the people who had her before had no idea what they were getting into. They had her for a couple years but it was a couple with no kids who both worked all day and didn't even have a fenced in backyard. Not that she was abused or anything, but they realized they couldn't give it the attention it needed so we brought it to a house with 3 kids and a backyard.

How has someone not said hunterway
"They are required to have great intelligence, agility and stamina for days of working on steep, rough country over large distances, driving very large mobs of sheep. Their bark is deep and repeating, usually with a short pause between barks, which allows the barking to be sustained for very long periods"
>>
>>845728
This. Doesn't have to be short haired though.

Colliesand herdering dogs are just constantly keeping everything in check which gets a irritating.

Any breed almost will be good for walking around and being outdoors. Dogs love it. Note: I said "dogs" not shitty purse rats.

I have (and recommend) a Belgian Tervuren. Less genetic issues than GSD, owner-focused so no worries of running off like a husky. They are working dogs, so they're biggest downside is you need to work them. Every day, preferably. Fur isn't as bad to deal with as you think, brush every week or two and it won't get bad.

I would also thumbs up GSPs, Border Collies, and Aussie Sheps

They were bred specifically for independence; in the winter they'd be fed by their owner but in the summer they were turned loose to feed themselves.

At least they're not KBDs; they have the same independence but they go after much larger game.

How I've trained my adopted husky mixes to hang around and be off leash is this. (disclaimer if you aren't a runner this won't be very effective)
1) Run the dog to near exhaustion, or at least to the point they aren't crazy hyper
2) Start taking them off leash in the garage near the door. this way if they go nuts and try to run off you can stop them.
3) start taking the leash off farther and farther back from the door until you are near the edge of the garage.
4) start taking the leash off outside of the garage and gradually take it off farther away from the garage
5) Drop the leash about a block away from the house and keep running as if nothing has happened. gradually push this 2-3-4 blocks away.
6) just take off the leash 1 block away and back it up

This method builds confidence and trust in both the dog and yourself. And it molds a dog who is naturally independent and has an already pre-established behavior how he can use this behavior in a positive way.

Also their prey drive is still strong, so the amount of training that you are going to have to do to suppress that with verbal commands will take a while. Literally working with them everyday to develop that trust. Northern breeds can be super loyal, but you have to earn their trust and respect and not be an asshole. They don't respond to beating them like normal dogs, and will in fact reject you if you do it

Depends on your lifestyle. Im a farmer/hunter so I have a jack russel as a pet that can do anything plus a heading dog (NZ Collie thing) for work. Theyre both fine /out/doors but they can only carry their food. I prefer to take the JRT during winter since hes a good footwarmer but the heading dog is a good pig hunter. Rescue either a retired working dog or go to the pound, anything that isnt a toy breed is naturally /out/.
