Lets see our sc/out/ vehicles! What do you drive to your adventures?
mine
1999 Land Rover Discovery TD5 Hemi Diesel
I'm slowly converting it into off road rig. stock image cause my phone got cracked while in Cherokee..
>>843129
I like land rovers in general- but you'd never make it out here when it gets muddy.
Random internet photo but this is what my back 20 looks like when it rains.
>>843230
Everytime I see things like this I chuckle.
Since mud especially pic related. Is mostly water. Idk why off road guys dont just seal up the 2/3rds of their trucks/cars like a boat. Put some decent knobbies on for pedal purposes and chooch right along mud. You can cross mud like that in a honda civic, as long as it could float like a boat. Such a simple solution nobody ever thinks of. Well. The us military did... I suppose maybe its more expensive then jacking your truck up 12 feet in the air. Idk really tho.
>>843250
I'd bet that driving what he has is more fun. A utilitarian solution is not what they are going for.
>>843250
You run into drag issues on a paddle wheel mudboat.
I drive a 2005 Toyota matrix XR that has a custom 12 inch lift sitting on 33's with a V8 shoehorned in place of the old 4 banger. I get absolutely maximum keks when people look at my rig. It took 6 months to build but ai love the 'ol girl. Wouldn't do it again, way too much custom work.
>>843129
Love the old discoverys but I think I'm getting a hilux soon. They're a bit more terrain suitable and have more loading space
>>843293
Pics?
>>843293
I have a build thread on one of the Toyota owner forums, use search keywords "bullet beast"
>>843302
Lol I responded to my own post instead of yours. Fuck I'm tired.
>>843293
You have pics too i presume?
Once I get outta bootcamp in a couple months I wanna get a good /out/ vehicle. I'll be in the washington/seattle are and wanna be pretty active when I can. What do you guys recommend?
>>843328
Subaru is the ony acceptable answer but you'll have to move to NH or VT and become a lesbian.
>>843293
Looked up your rig man that's fucking cool I wish I had your skills. Loved the night time shot on the cliff.
>>843328
Bronco/blazer or if you're a die hard dodge fan, the ram equivalent.

>>843129
2001 Lexus LX
>>843439
That's a helluva rack. Straight up Baja 500 or safari style.
I have roof clearance issues as it is though so I can't even run a lightbar. Might take one of those god awful visors and mount some LEDs in it.
>>843443
Im hunting for one but so far this was the best ive found to my price range. I scower the junk yards for parts I did find a wrecked one with a massive brush bar kit with full light bar and running lights im going back for next friday. Need my buddys help getting it.
>>843307
Found the matrix bud fuck you're harious. Sick car/truck/monster
>>843307
Why a matrix and not say a Subaru? Cool build either way, love the "anti-pushbar pushbar" haha
Dont really off road but it's my base camp for outings
Unconventional build here
-ARB front and rear lockers
-full lights all around
-Bilstein 5100s front, 5160s rear
-33" BFG All T''s
-Skid plates
I am currently designing a rear bumper that holds a spare tire, and that also allows for a Recon style bike t be installed.

>>843129
Just got an XJ. Pretty happy with it so far.
>>843591
I will miss my diesel W123, though.
>>843591
I love Cherokees. Very nice.
>>843507
I already owned the Matrix mostly and I loved the car before I started modding it. It's extremely capable now to do whatever I need it to do. I've had offers to sell it but I'll never do that.
Either copping a Cherokee XJ or 80's model 4runner. Can't decide yet.
>>843595
fuck yeah, I love those old mercedes
completely indestructable and sexy as fuck
>>843798
I want to get one but they all have 180k+ miles.
Are they easy to work on? Lots of problems?
>>843515
what is that tent?
>>843883
Get on the Jeep forums and you'll see people posting pics of their odometers for their daily drivers of over 500k miles. At 180k, I'd expect to be replacing most of the hang-ons. Alternator, water pump, that kind of shit.
Some of the things are easy to work on, some make me want to smack the engineers. The alternator is below the AC compressor, for example, and the belt is retarded to get off. Engine mounts are a snap to change though. Also, some of the valves/hoses for the heater and cooling system probably ought to be replaced.
Also, if you get one with 180k miles, do change the engine mounts. The passenger side one is notorious for snapping the bolts off in the engine bosses when they get old. Replace the bolts too. But like I said, they're easy, unless you snapped the bolts off in the bosses. I had that happen. It took a bag of nuts from Home Depot and a wire feed welder to finally get them out.
Another thing that likes to go out on them is the auxiliary fan, but that is easy to replace. You really only need it when you're going slow in the summer, so it's not a big deal.
The 4.0L is a bullet proof engine. Mine has 172k and it doesn't burn a drop of oil.
Just got her 5 months ago
>>843515
Use stability Jacks with This setup?
Gets me everywhere I want to go. All over the Cascades and Olympics in Washington, the Wasatch and Uintas in Utah and then all the way up the Al-Can to Alaska.
the back end is still a work in progress, but it's almost ready. then i can get back to other mods

1999 Honda civic. Stock manual transmission.
If you can't get to the trail head with a good set of tires, then you have no business driving any vehicle
>>846171
Like this? 99 EX, just got it home.
Couple replacement parts in today, got those installed. Wiped everything down, cleaned up the tunnel a bit more.
Gettin 'er show-ready for next week.
Vinyl wrap is in-design right now, might pick up new skis next week (custom color, so it's not like they've got stock of them on the shelf).
Couple more little parts coming in next week, quick install on that stuff.

1966 Dodge A-100 Sportsmans van.
>>847096
You can do a 4.0L head swap on those and get fuel injection if you want. You'll get better fuel milage, not have to worry about the bowls draining when climbing steep shit, plus you still get the low end grunt of the AMC 258. Just stay away from '01 heads (IIRC, it could be '00) because they have a casting flaw.
Funny enough, the crank from the 258 will fit in a 4.0L. Bored 20 over, that makes the 4.0L into a 4.6L stroker. If you just do a poor man's stroker, that'll probably get you 280 ft-lbs torque. If you want to do some work on the heads, mess with cams, roller rockers, etc... you can get up to 330 ft-lbs. One guy who did that with his TJ was pulling mid 14s or so at the track when he removed his spare, rear seat and any other extra weight he could throw off of the thing.
>>843921
I appreciate your help, I'm a different anon but I'm about to purchase a Grand Cherokee (assumably with 180k+ miles). Could you be a bit more specific with "engine mounts" please? I'm retarded with cars at the moment, and I'm looking to do a lot more /out/ things with my new vehicle.
>>847427
Got the same one but white with a softop
>>847647
AFAIK, it is only with the Cherokees, not the Grand Cherokees. If it is with the Grand Cherokees, it's probably only with the ones with the 4.0L.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bZ38DSwMnI
That guy is doing an upgrade, but it shows you how it is done with a cherokee. What breaks when shit goes wrong is the bolts holding the bracket on the engine block.

Their curb weight is around 3,300lbs. He removed shit just for the track and probably got it lighter than that. Combine that with a very broad torque curve that peaks at 330 ft-lbs, and IIRC he had 4.56s or 4.88s, and that little TJ is going to shit and get.
But yeah, 14 is fast. I remember a lot of kids saying "yeah, I've got a 10 second car!" and me being like "no, you have a 14 second car at best." I've only ridden in a 10 second car once, and with a driver who was only capable of pulling 11s out of it, and that shit was scary fast.
I walk everywhere (not city or suburb even), but I am looking into getting a UAZ. I hate driving because it gives me motion sickness.

Not since the 90s. After the car companies decided to convince suburban housewives that they all need big 4 wheel drive SUVs for safety and security (despite the fact SUVs on average don't have better crash ratings than most other class of vehicle) and a heaping helping of status symbol. Of course the real reason is that SUVs are exempt from emissions standards in a lot of states because they're classified as a light truck.
The trend is starting to shift towards Cross-overs (jumped up AWD hatchbacks) and AWD family wagons like Volvo but plenty of yoga pants moms gotta have them big off-roaders to do the school run.
The FJ is, of course, a perfectly capable vehicle. It just has a lot of extraneous shit that makes it heavier and costlier than a 4runner.
Seriously 4WD's are the worst. Get a motorbike guys, you can cover terrain faster as well as get places you couldn't dream of in a car.
Pic related, my steed
>>856821
Thanks, man! If you're in the states the best place to get a snorkel is eBay from Australia, I think paid $175 (75 for the snorkel, 100 for shipping) as opposed to $300 stateside
Pro tip: relocate your breathers, go to Home Depot and get some Garden Drip irrigation tubing (w/o holes) and T's for it. $25 and an afternoon and I have what would be a $250 kit

Old and worn but it runs nice, and I don't need a tent everytime since I can sleep in the back with the seats down.
>>856819
I'm familiar with Disco's and the TD5 engine, I just didn't know where the Hemi bit came from, most DI diesel engines have their combustion chambers mostly inside the piston crown and have a flat chamber top in the head.
Would it be retreaded to buy a mid 00s Forester for an /out/ vehicle?
>>857368
Kind of hard to get an elk home on a bike.
>>857940
It depends on what kind of /out/ stuff you want to do. You won't do this in one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9A6pUNYO_Q
(Not me, but I have gone up that before.)
However, if you're doing things like hauling your bike to way out of the way trails or getting up to the ski lift when it is snowy, it'll be fine. A lot of stuff that people think you need a bad-ass 4x4 for, you don't, and most Subarus are more capable on dirt/snow than most other passenger cars.
>>857980
No nothing like that, just getting around to hiking trails and down washed out roads. I have a Jeep Wrangler that i'm working on now for hardcore stuff. Just want something comfy I can drive 300 miles in then have it be capable enough to go down a washed out road to get to the trail head. Also wanna be able to sleep in it

>>858625
I don't know about the earlier AMC models, but once Chrysler bought them out, they put the AX-5s behind the 4cyl engines and the AX-15s behind the 4.0L I6 for manual transmissions. The 4cyl engine is a fucking boat anchor, so it really doesn't matter if the AX-5 is good or not. The AX-15 is a good transmission, and is very similar to the manual transmissions that went into the Toyota pickups at the same time.
As for the automatics, yeah, I don't trust much of anything from Chrysler in the '90s.
Anyhow, I have a '92 with the AX-15. Never had a problem with the clutch. My only bitch about it is that '92 was before they went to an external slave cylinder.

I really like the TJs. You get the coil suspension front and rear and they're still light like the YJs and XJs. The JKs are heavier due to safety regulations. In my XJ on 31x10.50s I was able to out climb a JK Unlimited Rubicon on a sandy hill, and I am convinced that it was 100% because I weigh 1,000 lbs less than it did. He did better on rocks, but that extra weight kills you in sand.

Currently bulding pic related. Using a 60's volkswagon for platform. Get cucked 10hp briggs. Volkswagon powerd wheelies are moving in.
>>843129
I take Lawny.
>>843250
Expensive and hard to do. Water in exhaust and coiloacks and such sucks. It would look absolutly retarded. And most of the time there is soots where mud is thick enough u drag frame and get stuck. You're not wrong with the civic. I watched a tuner in a mudrun one time make it because it wrapped like a 2 stroke and floated. Plus, "muh murica!" Gotta have 12 foot truck
>>864185
How the fuck do you steer that thing?
>>863982
BS
mah subbie us awesome it can beat a jeep but I losted my pictures
>>864196
Yup. I'd kick the hell out of a Subaru in terms of getting into nasty places just based on tire size alone.

(Not me, just an example of what Jeeps can do.)
I want one of these.
>>864331
>>864285
are you a fucking retard? thats obviously a rc car.
but i do agree, based mostly on tire size, the jeep can destroy a subaru.

With this. Lol. :D
Its dangerous as fuck compared to what i thought it would be. Building a 48" 18hp riding mower deck for it over winter. And a camera so i can drink beer and mow from watching my tv. Working on making it a giant roomba over summer.
>>862805
the whole assembly just slides out in 2 mins when you need to haul things. weighs like 95lbs total since its wood underneath and the foam is kinda dense.
the bed cap comes off too, but that's a much bigger pain in the ass

Rust and or cracks on the seat brackets. I just dropped $400 for a new seat and bracket for my 2000 xj.
Granted it's a nice seat that I wanted anyways but the factory stuff has problems with busting.
>>870325
The seats? Really? Well shit anon, I'll keep my eyes peeled. Good lookin out.
I just got myself a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee. She's my new project. I've got SO many plans for her.
>>870553
Here's the majority of my future mod plans. Between this and a few other things not in ebay, I'm looking at close to $8000 to make her exactly how I want.

Nothing says glamper like a WJ
>>870674
They're kinda... Soccer mom-ish.
>>870685
Maybe stock, they are. But I chose the WJ for its popularity. Parts are super easy to come by. I'm doing SO many modifications, it won't look like a soccer mom vehicle when I'm done with it.
Pic related is close to what I'm aiming for.
2016 ram rebel. Since pic, added a canopy and light bar behind the lower thin grille

I have an '02 Jeep Liberty thats done pretty well by me so far. I splattered a deer with it and managed to rebuild the entire front end in my driveway with minimal tools.

>>850937
Won't regret it senpai, I've got a 95 that I bought for 900 and works like a charm.
>>874441
I'm no yank and IMO that's the best powerplant the Hilux has ever had, tell me it's not an auto though.
>>874511
Unfortunately it is, but I don't really mind because i live in a busy city so it's nicer for traffic and my girlfriend can drive it when I've had too much to drink.
>>873891
They're slow as hell but it'll go over anything if you baby it.
Also its a fucking unkillable tank. I've overheated it twice (accidentally of course) and a lesser engine would be fried. She keeps tanking on and it doesn't even burn oil.
>>874615
So many of the Surf's are though, hardly ever see a manual one which is sorta weird for Hilux's, still a good vehicle though.

I'm actually considering the Dacia Duster which is basically the cheapest 4x4 SUV on the market where I live. It has sparse interior, but that doesn't matter to me.
