Let's talk about hammocks some more.

Direct your hammock related questions here.

Post pics of your set up.

Remember, this is a happy hammock thread.

I know nothing about hammocks but I bought one anyways because it was cheaper than a tent. Can I zip two old cheap coleman sleeping bags together and use it as a pea pod type setup and not die?

No need to sew them both together, use one just like a normal sleeping bag and another one as an underquilt.
Just run some shock cord around the edges (personaly made two small holes in the corners and ran the shockcord inside) and attach some adjustable cords for the suspension

I've only ever seen pics of hammocks being hanged in places where it would just as easy to setup a tent. Anyone got pics or experience hanging in really steep forests or ones with very uneven ground?
>>
>>841458
It's more about the comfy factor, I'd say. I need to carry a LOT more gear to be even half as comfortable in a tent.
>>
>>841186
Is that a Mt. Washington 3 underquilt?
>>
Like 90% of the hikers I came acrossed, that used hammocks, as I got more north on the AT either dropped out or ditched them for tents. With all the accessories they are just as heavy as a tent with much less space. With my 1 man tent I could easily cook in the rain, keep my shit dry and do foot maintenance with ease.

I've not been out for years in mine, but I dusted off the old DD last week and I've realised that I've *just* got back into the ok weight range for my Hennessy Explorer too.

I had a hell of a good time out fishing from the shore, lounging around and whittling a couple of spoons.

I can see this becoming a regular thing as the weather here allows
>>
This may be a dumb question, but I am new to hammocks.

I just bought a grand trunk single parachute nylon hammock, and every time I get in I feel like I'm just going to tear right through the bottom. Is this normal? Is it as fragile as it feels, or can it take more of a beating?

What's a good tarp under $100? I use a Yukon Outfitters rainfly now, it's cheap enough but I want more coverage. Was thinking about the Hennessy Hex, but thought maybe /out/ had some recommendations
>>
>>841186
How good would a hammock and tarp setup be for a homeless guy who just wants space to keep his bike safe and a laundry bag. Two bags. Right now im in a tent with the bike just exposed outside.

Also, just saying

The realreason im making this post is because i went to jersey mikes yesterday and got a sandwitch with tons of stuff, but no oregano.

And im like ok, i can reg up each bit when i eat it. I work pizza so thats easy. I eat 2/3 no prob

Now i sit here in my tent with 1/3 witc and no regano.

Fuck this gay earth. I just want my reg

Can i break up a joint and use that as oregano?
>>

I got the hex 10x12 as my first non-wal-mart tarp. I set it up once as a test and it's huge.

Have any of you guys on /out/ tried the Tentsile? I was wondering if it was worth getting since it seemed like it had the benefits of both a hammock and a tent.
>>
>>842506
In my opinion it's a cool toy, but overpriced, and very heavy.

There is a wow factor, and you'll get a lot of attention, your friends will think it's cool, but I can't say it's really any more practical than a traditional tent or hammock set up.
>>
>>842019
Now that's a good hammock vs tent argument there.

You don't want to use rope on a tree. It can harm the bark and is prone to slipping. Rope to hang a hammock is very much frowned upon in the hammock community.

Use tree straps and whoopie slings with a marlin spike if you want an adjustable, lightweight suspenion option.

>>
>>843373
Do little research before shit posting. Rope can harm trees and damage to the bark can kill a tree. Multiply that over many trees and many hammock users and it becomes a problem. Webbing is lighter than climbing ripe that you're probably using anyways. Ask any serious hammock camper and they will tell you the same, rope is a big no no.

>>
>>843825

>>841887

read the tread- this guy is using a DD hammock, and looks cozy af. no sign of a tarp though
>>
>>842451
I've used a Chinook tarp before and it's pretty darn huge at 12x9.6.
It's a great tarp though. Super durable with lots of lashing points for different setup options.
The pricing on it is always changing too so it could be anywhere from $30 to $100 at times.
Look up some youtube reviews for a more detailed look.

https://amzn.com/B002PULNRC

Another tarp I was looking at getting was the Aqua Quest tarp. I like everything about it except for the size of it.
If only it was about 11x9 or something, it would of been perfect. Price isn't too bad either.

>>843273

>>
>>843825

>>
>>844305

Thanks, looks like I might get one.
Anybody know how legal it is to wild camp in a Hammock in Germany/Austria. All I found is its a legal greyzone and probably up to the ranger/officer that finds you, since tenting is usually illegal. Tent is defined as framework and cover. Not sure if you can say a tarp has a framework, tho.
>>
>>844320
Camp out of sight, LNT and you'll be fine.
Source: Erfahrung
>>
>>844305
Making whoopie slings is easy, you just need some 7/64 amsteel and it's cake.
>>
>>843114
strap to tree, becket hitch on hammock. can also use becket hitch to attach to strap, but I prefer leaving a bowline in one end and looping that through the loop on my strap
>>
How would rope damage a bark so bad that tree dies? Legit question, I'm curious as I don't see it happening honestly , but perhaps it heightenes the possibilty of a tree getting infected by some disease if you damage the bark
>>
>>844490
the strap people whine it will AND, they are correct BUT it would take days upons weeks upon months of rope use for this to happen.
The chances of somebody picking the same 2 trees as me and tying at the same height & angle are virtually nil for once, never mind the 100's of times it would take to harn the bark/tree.
So I use rope because:
I have it with me anyway, no extra weight carrying sling straps.
>>
>>844503
But it's only that in the end? exposed trunk being a way for bacteria/insects/whatever to infect the tree? I mean, what else could it be?
>>
>>844506
Unless you're doing it in a fee typ campground there is 0 chance using rope will harm the tree.
I actually have chain in my backyard trees and the tree has grown over the chain and I still hang my hammock from the chain with no issues.
>>
>>844506
The bark of a tree is what carries nutrients, and trees generally have fairly limited means to heal it. Destroying enough bark in a small area will kill a tree.
>>
>>844313
http://www.animatedknots.com/midshipmans/#ScrollPoint
>>
>>844520
Not all trees will be harmed, but some are more vulnerable, and are susceptible to diseases, which can kill a tree.
>>
how warm are woobies? I'm thinking of getting 2, for both TQ and UQ. How cold could I go with them without getting hypothermia?
>>
>>844490
the tree won't die from one person using ropes instead of straps, it'll die from lots of people using rope, not straps. one person using ropes can strip the bark, though. and that's not good. the main thing is we don't want hammock camping banned, so we try to be as strict with LNT as possible
>>
>>844316
dutchware has them. they're not hard to make if you've got amsteel though
>>
>>844782
Stripped bark can be a death sentence on it's own when there's a disease or a pest epidemic going around. Though it really depends on the tree species.

All those amazon hammocks are just Chinese made knockoffs, mostly made by the same company and rebranded to be sold all over amazon.

They're fine, just not great hammocks. They're too short, and a little heavy.

If you really want to hammock camp, spend a little more. It's like tent camping, if you buy the cheapest tent off amazon it'll work, it just won't be great.

hi, stupid question

how bad of looks will i get when my husband and i use our hammocks in a drive-up campground?

we usually hike to a campground and use hammocks, so we don't own a tent, but i'm not sure how weird it is to use hammocks at a drive-in campground, or if there will even be trees to strap them to...

So, okay. I live in a fairly high-rent area and I'm a pretty big guy (height, not weight). I need SPACE, but can afford little. I'm considering getting the massive bed out of my little room and storing it, and using my camping hammock for a while.

My question is, how do I mount it? I don't want to spend big bux on a stand, should I just put hooks into the sturdiest corners of my room and hang it like that? I want to be able to just hang up my bed in the corner and have space to breathe in my room.

If I do end up getting/making a stand, I'd want it to be portable. Most camping out here has plenty of trees but sometimes you get unlucky.

Has anyone done this? Any tips? Is this a horrible idea?

I'll probably just install the wall hooks and chain/straps. I'll just beg forgiveness if the landlord doesn't like it, he never follows through on his own project promises.
>>
>>848344
hammock stand from IKEA is like 50 bucks, senpai. Don't risk drilling and subsequently pulling down non load bearing walls in an apartment that you don't even own.

Go over to hammockforums, do some research. IIRC someone with the handle 'turtle lady' or similar came up with a DIY bamboo stand that might be worth considering.
>>
>>845993
It is. But again, straps do it better. Also many places ban the use of rope, so you'll be more limited on where you can camp. Also the more people that settle for rope instead of straps the more likely hammocks could be banned outright.

Straps are also easy to make out of old seat belts if you can sew, or some tie downs of you cut the hooks off
>>

I've been looking to get a hammock for going kayaking I've noticed at my college everyone and their sister uses Enos, are these just a meme or are they actually pretty good for more than just a couple hours of use a week?
>>
>>851556
ENO is fine, but you can get the same quality for much less money. All are plenty comfortable for a good night's sleep if mounted properly.
>>
>>851556
They are too short to be used as a camping hammock. The only ly people that use them are people who have never used anything else. They are a meme, a marketing gimmick. Any serious hammock user has at least a 10 foot long hammock, with 11 feet by far being the most popular. ENO hammocks are 8'4" laughably short. Don't buy one under any circumstances unless you have down syndrome and are an actual idiot. In that case you get a pass.
>>
>>841458
No pictures, I went car camping with some friends the first time i used my hammock. The "pad" of the site whoever planned it chose was at an angle. Everyone in tents complained because they would slide down their tents over the night. And then it rained and they had small rivers running under the tents. I set my hammock up between two trees with a bunch of roots and rocks underneathand slept comfortably and dry the entire time. Only thing that got wet was a towel i had left in someone elses tent. I often cose the worst spots to pitch a tent when im with friends so that im not over a spot they would have to use to be able to sleep on the ground.

>>
>>842483
you cannot use weed as oregano, wait until you get back to the pizza and reg it up then
>>
>>848344
If you have concrete walls you need a rotary hammer and mounts. Even a tiny hole should be able to hold a hammock, but you may want something a little bit beefier so you can use proper mounts. When you move out, you need spackling paste and paint the same color of your wall and it takes minutes to restore it (properly done, it's difficult to see anything's ever been there). If it's drywall, you need expansion anchors. If this is the case, you really need to know what you're doing, or you risk pulling out a chunk of the wall, which will be difficult (expensive) to fix.
>>
>>841458
It takes a while to trust your hammock. you don't want to fall half a meter onto a rock/root in the middle of the night.
and bushes usually means more insects and moisture.
then you want a nice view, too.

I'm going backpacking/rockclimbing in South East Asia come December. The lowest it gets is 65 degrees fahrenheight.

I have a eno doublenest hammock plus straps. What else do you guys recommend so I stay comfy on those nights I decide to camp by a crag. I've already purchased a tarp that was recommended on an earlier post. Not sure about sleeping bag and any other things to get.
>>
>>854428
At that temp a sleeping bag would be fine probably. As long as it isn't a down filled bag. Honestly I don't even use an underquilt for temps above 70. If the temp goes to 65, even the lightest layer below you will be fine. Even laying on a wool blanket would be more than enough.

I'm a huge fan of underquilts though, so if you have access to one, they are amazing.

Jacks R Better? I have a Mt Washington 3, I like it but I would like a little wider quilt.

Good advice. My issue is weight of course. The rock climbing is going to add additional weight between the shoes, rope, harness, quickdraws, and chalk bag. I'm only taking a 35L bag. I'll need some time to think of what I can and can't do

Anyone ever go hammock camping with a long gun?

How did it work? Trying to figure out good ways of storing it while sleeping.

sorry I'm a noguns but sounds like rigging a sheath or just loops on a ridgeline would give you easy and secure access.

I'm still sleeping in a tent. I hate it. I always sleep horribly and feel like shit in the morning. Also, occasionally I get this weird tent claustrophobia thing and I feel like I'm suffocating in the middle of the night and I have to stick my head out the flap. I'm gonna try hammocking.

I hate tents too. I'm tall and I have back problems, so most bags and pads are too short, most tents too small. For years I avoided camping very often because as much as I liked getting out of the city for a few days, it meant sleeping on the ground in a damp bag inside a bigger damp bag.

Now I want to go out for a night or two every weekend. It's night and day for me.

Made one of these. Works pretty well for the cost, and you can stuff them with more insulation if needed.
Currently looking to modify it with some clips or something to keep it stretched taut.

Most people would be fine to 40, some people say freezing. There are a few warm sleepers I've heard say they have used it closer to 25.

For me, I wouldn't use it below 40.

The only compact tier lightweight hammock I can order to my place is a hammock made out of parachute fabric.

I plan on buying a hammock I can use while outing and just in my backyard. What all would I need for this besides the hammock itself? Also is an ENO a solid hammock, or should I shoot for something else. Must be purchased from cabelas or dicks as that's where I have money for

What's the advantage of a double nest hammock over a single nest

Just picked up a Kelty Noah's Tarp 16x16. Holy fuck it's big. I'm excited because the gf and I can hang side by side and be able to close off the end flaps like doors. It's going to be like a tiny house this winter.
>>
>>865208
They both suck.

They are both too short.

They both cost 3 times what they should.

The difference is that the doublenest is also too wide.
>>
>>864869
Not really.

>>865205
ENO is overpriced and not that good. You'll spend twice as much for a setup that's half as good, but that's all Dicks or Cabelas have besides Grand Trunk.

Grand Trunk is about the same. ENO has better tarps than Grand Trunk, but I like Grand Trunks hammocks better.

Cabelas also has Kammock hammocks. Which are for people that want a hammock as shitty as an ENO, only want to spend 20% more for it.
>>
>>865408
What are the disadvantages of a parachute hammock?
>>
>>865402
What do you recommend instead
>>
>>865408
Would you recommend a single or double hammock then?
>>
>>865598
Most people I've seen who enjoyed the single bought a double after trying one someone else had
>>
>>860231
What am I supposed to see in this picture?
>>
>>865598
There's really no such thing as a "double" hammock, and any company that markets one, isn't worth buying.

2 people just don't work in a gathered end hammock. "Double" hammocks are just wider. The wider fabric just flaps in your face.

Buy a quality hammock from somewhere like Warbonnet, Dutchware, Arrowhead Equipment, Simply Light Designs, Dream Hammock, or just make your own. If you can sew, you can make a hammock many times better than an ENO for 1/3 the cost.
>>
>>865424
I have one, and I find the fabric too stretchy. It's also heavier than it should be.

Would lining a hammock with a rescue blanket be enough to compensate for not having a sleeping pad?

I love the idea of hammocking, but I'm not sure about how warm it is.
>>
>>865869
A sleeping pad and blanket are fine depending how cold it gets at night where your camping and the time of year it is
>>
>>865852
RBTR has a kit, use heavier fabric for a stronger hammock. I'm making mine from hyper d 70 (2.2 ounces per square yard, 4 yards for the hammock).

If you've ever tried it, it doesn't work well with a double. The grand trunk single I have though, works well.

Some cheap chinese shit that has a "M-tramp" logo. Bought it without camping in mind, cost like 30eu couple years ago. Has no size written on it so pic has cd for comparison.

The side and front pouches did not come with it.

This looks like the same bag

No, all done by hand, last time i held a sewing needle was back in primary school. It took like an hour to sew on the loops for lines (thats all the sewing you need to do).

The green line shows where the shock cord runs through the top of the sleeping bag, just make small holes at the top end, run it through and add cord locks (same on both sides even though you cant see in the pic)

Repeat same thing at the bottom of the bag.

Here's a closeup of one of the loops, its just a patch of green cloth that seconds as a reinforcement point for the cord locks (you can see the shock cord hole is just on the edge of the loop)

A 1.6 fabric is plenty for a 200 lbs person. Even a 1.0 fabric is plenty for a 175 lbs person.
>>
>>865869
It would only help a little bit, and you'd get condensation. You'd also have a crinkly blanket making noise all night with any slight movement.

Hammocks are chilly without insulation. A pad works fine, and underquilt is king.

Durability is very good, all the holes are reinforced, loops are firmly attached to the tarp itself.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1_0Dn_v5R8

It is waterproof, you can see (at 50s) it has a hole at the center but i have filled it with hot glue and it never leaks.
