#74-"Carp or Crap?" Edition

Previous Thread:
>>832153

Skid is back with a carp recipe:
>You get a board of oak
>Then you scale the carp
>You nail it to the board by it's head and tail
>You chop onions, potatoes, and bell peppers and surround the fish
>Salt and pepper then put it in the oven at 375 degrees for 2 hours
>Once it's done you peel the fish of and scrape away the vegiees and eat the board- it will taste much better than the fish.

Some late night catfishing. First fish was the biggest. Had a gator bite my bobber.
>>
>>836503
Is that a channel cat? Those pectoral fins look really long
>>
>>836508
Pretty sure it's a blue catfish.
>>
>>836509
Wasn't sure if it was just the camera flash or it was blue. Looked skinny though, the pics I see of blues they always seem to be fat.
>>
>>836511
Yeah, it's on the smaller side for the blues.
>>
>>836503

still nice fish!
>>
It is my opinion that with the right recipe, any fish can be made delicious.

Do I want to eat fried bowfin fillet? Hell no. Bowfin balls? Fucking delicious.

I hear that carp is awesome pickled, and it makes great tacos too. I'm told it tastes very mild, like tilapia.

My bet is Gafftopsail catfish

though they're usually found in salt or brackish water
was anon fishing in brackish water?

i caught a bunch of them when i was fishing in texas (salt water)
>>
Caught a nice bass yesterday. He got himself twice on the front treble then snagged the back on its side. Felt bad when we released it because it took forever to swim off but hopefully it survived.

This. Not sure how someone would think blue or channel.

My concern is that the furfaggot is back again.

f+t threads were much better without him shitting it up with his faggotry.
>>
Thinking about getting a kayak but it seems like it would be weird sitting down like that the whole time
>>

its not that bad, your ass will fall asleep after a few hours unless you invest in a really nice seat, Plus if you have a good kayak you can stand , i can in mine but dont too often
>>
Can anyone suggest a good Med-Light spinning rod, preferably 6'6" around the $80 and under price range.

I want a good, all around set up for catching anything I can from the banks.

Picked up a Shimano Symetre earlier today on sale.

I've been considering the No 8 Blackout.
>>
>>836668
gar is good eatin but skinning it is like doing duct work.
>>
>>836694
Yep, Brackish water.
>>836727
I just looked at the FWC manual for game fish and picked what looked the closest.
>>
>>836867
You don't skin them. The best way is to chop them into sections, then you just push the meat out.

I just test it out in shallow clear water to see the action and its reaction to the speed. You can jig them, reel them in slow so they wobble back and forth, reel them in fast so the wiggle fast or even spin, or do cycles of reeling and allowing it to fall a bit. There's more than that too.

Techniques depend mostly on temperature & light conditions and the type of target fish.

so anyway here's my night fishing report:

got drunk and accidentally spent all night talking to some girl.

fish count: 0
lures lost: 1
bites: lots of bites on the mann's foot long jelly worm, probably small fish nibbling

i did put the 30 lb spidershit on the abu/abu combo. come to find out i can get a 7 foot abu vengeance for like 25 bucks online so ima order that and return this 6'6' model to the store because it's $50 in store. rod length is often bs because the way i look at it is from where i'm casting in hand to rod tip, and some longer rods are just longer on the grip end which doesn't do me any favors. that's why i got this abu over the similarly priced lews speed stick since it was actually shorter on the grip end. save that long grip shit for saltfagging.

the abu cardinal is actually a pretty damn comfy reel. for 30 bucks it's legit. except for the broken plastic washer assembly where you change it from left to right hand operation and the outside nut being plastic shit, no big surprise. ten cents of metal is all i ask for.

is anyone here familiar with crystal river? i cant even find my rod online, it's a CR335-X and the reel is a CR285/B

it's not a combo from what i can tell judging by the reel (4-8lb) and rod(6-12lb) recommended weights being different, unless that's normal

Bestiality involves real animals.
Furfaggotry involves people dressed as animals or animated anthropomorphic creatures.

How do you guys prepare your fish?

I usually just get a few small panfish for a bit of a meal. I don't even bother scaling them since that comes right off easily after being cooked. I eat more panfish than anything else. Though, I prefer 24" or smaller channel cats, but that requires a bit of a drive to get them. They are pretty tasty though.
>>
>>837037
I filet them, then whisk up an egg, then add salt, pepper, ginger powder, and dried dillweed to some pancake batter Then go pancake powder, egg, pancake powder then straight to hot oil
>>
>>837054
>>837037
Unless it's a good fish in which case I mix soy sauce, ginger powder, sugar, paprika, dill weed, lemon juice, and pepper and set the fish in there for about 45 minutes before throwing them on a charcoal grill
>>
>>837037
black sea bass , cod or any other light white meat
>fillet
>skin
>rinse
>salt, pepper, maybe a tiny bit of garlic powder
>coat in flour
> a bit more salt and pepper
>egg and milk wash
>panko/other breading
>bake at 400 ( in a glass pan ) for 20 or so min
> add lemon juice as its cooking
>serve with rice and or some sort of potato and or chips
>>
>>837037
I do love some panfish, though I scale mine first.

I cut off the head and gut them. I leave the fins on, Todd them in mustard and cornmeal breading, then deep fry them. The fins turn nice and crunchy, the meat is nice and moist, and the mustard gives it a nice zing over milk or egg.

For bigger fish, I fillet but fry the same way. This includes catfish. If I'm feeling knifey I'll shave the catfish. I take a catfish fillet and slice it long ways two or three times until I have a few thin fillets. They get nice and crunchy that may. Shaved catfish is amazing.

Sometimes I'll bake a big bass. I like to stuff them with dill.

When I'm lucky enough to go redfishing, I'll bust out the cast iron and make some blackened redfish steaks.

I eat a lot of fish. It's (technically) free and delicious. I don't spend as much money on tackle as some people here, so it helps out the grocery bills.

Will the Dick's sale still be going on tomorrow?

Also, what's a good rod to just toss in the bed of my truck? It's a covered bed, but it gets hot in south Florida.
>>
>>837087
Just go online and look at the sales flyer. I don't even know what is going on there now but they always have a few lures on sale and it changes. I haven't been to Dick's in a couple weeks.

And just get whatever rod you like without spending a ton on a truck rod. Still gotta reccommend those Berkley Lightning Rods for $40. Never had the heat mess with a rod, but I keep them inside most of the time so who knows what the FL sun will do to glue and shit. Either way just drop $40 on something like that Berkley rod and if it gets fucked after 3 years in the truck, go buy another.

Every time I go on long trips I end up spending more time scratching my asshole than fishing, i actually left after just 3 hours yesterday because it itched so badly and I was being torn up by sand gnats the whole time.

I love my yak but sometimes i wish i just had a 24' boat to fly out into the ocean on.

>same as having your gf dress up in a cop uniform

Cat ears or something are bordering on creepy but are fine, fursuits are NOTHING like a cop uniform or something along the lines of because a cop is still a human.

Furries get off on animals. I don't care if its drawn animals or not, they are very clearly not human and have wolf dicks. I don't know the word for it off the top of my head and I'm not gonna look it up but thats 100% bestiality pornography for people who get off on animals.

though when i do any sort of saltwater fishing, waiding or kayaking i hate dealing with the itching and saltcrotch but its more when the water evapotates and the salt stays theat the chafing occurs

I went fishing at a river near my house today for bass and pike, but I got side-tracked because there's a canal that runs parallel to the river that's absolutely full of 24" channel catfish (I live in RI and freshwater fish usually aren't that big here). What's the best kind of bait for those guys? I've only caught bottom feeding catfish in deeper ponds before. Here's a picture of one, though it's really zoomed in so it looks small.

Also, I'm heading to Lake Wononscopomuc in CT in a couple weeks and it's supposed to have a lot of bass, pickerel, perch and trout. I usually use texas rigged worms, some rooster tails, storm lures and crankbait. What other kinds of lures should I grab before heading out there, and how do you guys know what to used based on conditions and visibility/depth in the water? I usually just cycle through things till something hits.
>>
>>837445
i got a Penn Battle II and an Ugly Stik GX2
>>
>>837460
that's not a channel catfish. its a carp of some sort.
>>
>>837462
Is that what that is? I've never fished for carp before.
>>
>>837463
yeah. you can tell because the head comes to a point. a channel cat would have a flat face and also not be as "round" in the body. i've never fished for carp before but it can be done with certain rigs.
>>
>>837461
SPEAKING OF WHICH

My dad said to soak the spool on the reel in hot water for 10 minutes after I've got the line on
Should I be doing that?
>>
>>837464
The area they were in is kind of tough to cast in, so I was just planning on using bait instead of lures for them (I lost a few lures while going for panfish and small bass in that canal). Any idea what kind of bait they hit?
>>
Are there any spots in Southwest Connecticut where I can catch some chain pickerel?
>>
>>837466
I'm not him, but the only bait I've ever been able to catch carp on is corn
>>
>>837465
I've never heard of doing that. What is it supposed to do?
>>
>>837471
Just like a can of corn you'd buy at the store and then pop it on the end of your hook?
>>
>>837476
Yeah
>>
>>837465
Ten minutes probably isn't necessary. Just run some warm water over it for a little bit.

>>837474
It helps mono line from to the reel
>>
>>837474
He said it'll form the line to the smaller spool since the size difference will cause tangles when it comes off the reel
>>837478
Alrighty
>>
>>837477
Oh nice. Large bass hooks or circle hooks, and what else do you have on the line?
>>
>>837478
>>837480
Interesting. I'll try that next time I change lines.
>>
>>837484
What I do is I get a #2 baitholder hook and a 1 ounce weight on a fish finder rig tied on #20 mono and gob on all the corn I can. Recently I've started fly fishing for them though.
>>
How do pike bite in the later months of summer and early autumn?
>>
>>837465
they make a spray for mono and flouro that does the same thing. spool up your reel and pjt a couple squirts on and it relaxes the line so its not all loopy and casts better
>>
Can I take a catfish rod and just cast it out there with some liver flavored dough and then bass fish while I wait for a bite?
>>
>>837599
Probably. What state?
>>
>>837599
If I'm throwing out a rod for catfish or whatever, that's how I do it. I just try not to stray too far from the rod set out with bait. But like the other anon said, make sure you check state laws on rod limits.
>>
>>837602

>not catfishing in the cool, cool breeze in the middle of the night
>>

I suppose it depends how much time you have. If you have tons of time to actually get out and go fish, get some gear.

If you can't get out the house too much, but want to dick around at home with something, go fly vise.

As an aside, you can make money tying flies. I will always buy flies from a fellow hobbyist over Kenyan made crap from a big box store.
>>
>>837616
Tying flies is fun. I'm not very good at it, but it's cool to make stuff and see if it works.

They're $80 and they look real nice. They have good reviews everywhere I've seen. I almost bought one today, but I'm not 100% sure if I want it yet. I'll upgrade eventually because it seems kind of wasteful to have a sedona on an uglystik lol.
>>
>>837684
Sounds nice. What size you looking at?

Idk why but I'm just getting sick of Ugly Stiks now. They are horrible for fishing lures. Especially with braid when I'm expecting sensitivity and some good action.
>>
>>837694
6' 6" ML. I'd rather have a 7foot but I didn't see any in that size.

And I'm the same with the uglystiks. I have one I use for cranks and it works alright for that, and then another one for catfishin since I can just watch the line and not have to worry about feel too much.
>>
>>837701
Personal preference being paramount, I like 6'6" for ML rods.

TFO makes a 7' ML spinner do 99. Every once and a while you can catch them on sale at BPS for 80ish.

I've never used one of their conventional rods, but out of all the fly rods in their price point, I found TFO to be about the best.
>>
>>837747
>>837701
I like that $70-$100 price point on rods and reels. You normally don't get garbage, but at $80 for a rod it won't be the end of the world if you break it being a dumbass after a year or two of use. Much more than that and I get concerned throwing them in the back of my car all the time.

I like my Abu Garbia Orra S a lot.
>>
>>837788
I almost grabbed one of those Orra S or SX reels>>837809 , whichever it was. Dick's had them on clearance, but they were the clamshell models with the low capacity spool so I was thinking about ordering a regular spool.

Shimano Symetre is supposed to be real nice at $100 and you can't go wrong with a Sedona or Sahara for $60-$80. Pflueger President is a standby for $60, and the President LE for $80. I have one of each of the Presidents and they are nice. When you take them apart, they put a lot of thought into them and build them well.

What did you catch it on?
>>
>>837832
A simple hook with a worm, I was using a weight to fish on bottom.

as for the Rod and Reel, I dont know. I borrowed a buddies gear that day, I dont think it was anything special. I had him pull the anchor because it started to pull the boat. When it got close to the surface i had him use a net to pull it in.
>>
>>837831
i mean if we want to make a competition , i could call out of work tomorrow, Call my buddies and go out shark fishing, and try to get something 400+ lbs, Or with a day or two of planning we could go try to catch some huge tuna,

>>837854
The $50 ones? I was actually lookin at them at Bass Pro like a year or two ago when setting up my President LE combo but passed. They just aren't great rods for lure fishing. They are fine for hucking out weights for catfish or anything like that, but the sensitivity and action isn't there for feeling nibbles on lures. Plus setting the hook quickly and casting isn't nearly as nice as something with a faster tip.

For fishing lures, it's nice having something with a fairly stiff backbone where mostly the tip is doing the work. It's strange because it's not like they are heavier weight rods, but they just work different. I don't even own anything super expensive, but I think it's just how other rods are built with carbon blanks or whatever compared to the fiberglass type Ugly Stiks.

Maybe I need to get a boat and give up on shore fishing
>>
>>837866
Where are you at?

There are lots of spots where shore fishing is straight, but this summer heat is really making me want a kayak one of these days. The bigger bass are just being lazy and staying deep. And the smaller bass won't bite until right as the sun is going down.

He's right about boats. I had a couple Jet Skis when I lived in IL and it was such a goddamn waste of money. Now I'm in FL so at least I could use one more, but I would like to get a kayak for some of these little lakes where I can't get to certain shorelines because of either trees or property I can't reach.
>>
>>837872
It is nice than standing around, i currently use a john boat with a decent sized motor. But ive been thinking about getting into kayaking. The problem is i hate alligators like idiana jones hates snakes and where i fish is gator central.

anyone have any tails or stories about kayaking and animal run ins.
>>
>>837877
Kek that's another thing. Some of these gators are larger than most kayaks. I don't fish a ton of places with gators but they are all over if I go out west. A few of the spots the gators love hanging out right by the anglers looking for an easy fish to grab. It's sketchy when you are standing on a rock in the water and a 10' gator that was right beside you disappears under the murky water.
>>
>>837879
my dad ruined me as a kid, we went camping at some lake and there was a paved land bridge across the lake to a island everyone camped on.
and i shit you knot was a gator every 3 feet going along the bank of the 50 yard bridge. We went fishing the next day and dad started telling me about what a gator does when it gets a hold of you. After a few minutes after that we sprang a fucking leak on the boat. We couldnt get the engine going and a storm was rolling in. We ended up paddling and using the troller motor to get back to shore. But in the time it took to get to shore, i was in a all out fucking panic.

Drove from Baltimore to somewhere in New Jersey, with a neighbor and friends of his, to go fishing for Bluefish on a charter boat this past weekend.

Any suggestions for a small aluminum boat that can navigate shallow water, narrow streams/rivers, calm water, light enough to carry, can transport in back of small pickup, and hold 2 people & gear of no more than about 600lbs distributed? Upright seats are not wanted and the most motor it'd have would be a trolling motor (and oars). I don't want something with seats that hide a portion of the bottom, due to difficulty in repairing if needed.

Like what would the best style be? I was thinking a 10ft john boat like pic related, but I'm not too familiar with them verses other styles. Anyone with hands on experience who can recommend anything?

This one has foam under the seats (in case of capsizing) and no access to under the seats.

Boat for women or kids. Gotta go otter mode. Single person max is 275lbs at least, so no popped rivets when a guy of "average" weight (175-185lbs) steps into it by themselves.

A 2 person Jon is going to be 14ft so not that easily transported off a trailer. I've got a 12ft aluminum and after 210lbs of me, 60lbs of battery, motor, and coolers, I'm left with only 145lb til I reach the coast guard weight limit.

But those are excellent boats for one person fishing tight waters. I draft at maybe 4 inches and can stand in it much easier than in a kayak. Plus I've got room for 5 rods in clips or rod holders, a net, a 20 gallon cooler, many jugs, a live well, and tons of tackle plus a rotating seat.

I fish the north end of a lake which is a mixture of flats, small channels, and flooded forest/submerged timber. My boat isn't fast like the bass boats that run the main lake but they can't fish the spots I can unless the lake is way above table

>>838239
Quit spending money on that shit if you're trying to be frugal. They're neat and, yes, cheaper than buying the lures individually but still...

Every time I go to the hardware store or walmart I pick up one fishing related thing. May be a 90 cent bobber, may be a 5 dollar frog. Just one thing. Usually I try to stay under 3 dollars. It adds up fast in your tackle box without your wallet taking a 50 dollar hit because you wanted a lot of gear right-fucking-now.

While I'm unintentionally shilling for walmart I'll add that their sub $10 Berkley sunglasses in the fishing aisle are an incredible value. UV protection and polarized and I don't flip shit if I beat them up. I've got 4 pairs.

I usually swing by the store every pay day and blow 10 or 15 bucks on some little odds and ends. It's usually panfish stuff, lile jigs or bobbers (I like the Thill Balsa ones at $4 a shot) or some soft plastics.

It adds up fast as long as I don't loose a bunch of shit every trip.

>>838417
That's fucked up man. I live in RI and have chartered plenty of boats to go for stripers, bluegill and shark fishing and have never once not caught tons of fish. Although, since the state is small and everyone knows everyone, we always know the captain or know him through a friend.

I'd be fucking pissed if I dropped that kind of money, spent the whole day out there and didn't catch anything.
>>
>>838420
Oh, yes. Pissed is the right word for it. It's been a few days since then, and I'm still bitter over it. I was hoping to bring home a couple days worth of dinner.

One thing that got really annoying though; we kept sailing past MASSIVE schools of bait fish, jumping at the surface. Any good fisherman will tell you those small fish are running from something bigger, below them. Captain wouldn't stop the boat.

I never even saw that post. But for channel cats, I always like using dip bait. The shit that comes in jars like pic related. There are special hooks and rigs for it that you will want to buy, but they are cheap anyway. Otherwise nightcrawlers, chicken livers, or shiners/bluegill dead or alive.

And for the bass and pickerel, your lure choice looks fine. A lot of days when I'm running Texas rigs, I do better with lizards and crawdads instead of worms since they have a bit more action. Color choice is strange. With the soft plastics, I have a lot of luck with darker stuff like Junebug around here where the water is slightly murky. And chartruese seems to do well in clear water if nothing else is working. If it is really sunny with clear water, try and avoid super bright silver spinners and cranks. At least that's whay I heard. When using crankbaits or jerkbaits like Rapalas, gold is always my favorite color and works well in so many conditions.

I want to get out fishing now. I really want to get down somewhere with peacocks but don't feel like sitting in traffic.
>>
>>837650
I've literally never caught one. I've only ever caught bass and trout. I'd really appreciate any suggestions or places you might have. They like inline spinners right?
>>
>>838443
Have you had a warm summer? It may be kinda tough.

They bite a lot of the same shit as bass. Inline spinners, jerkbaits, swimbaits, they will all work. Maybe topwater too.

, whats worth keeping in mind, is they like to hide by clumps of weed etc, and they also like when you pause a for a second

>>838445

My buddy got a house on a small lake in MA that's completely private and no one outside of his family fishes on. I've already been a couple of times and I'm going back again soon. The fish are small, but there are lots of them, the water's beautiful and they bite a lot.

Sufix 832 is smoother, slightly smaller diameter, and made from different materials (dyneema and gore fibers vs the spectra fibers in PP).

Also, 832 has slightly higher breaking strengths for its rated strength then PP.

Well time to find another thread to participate in since this ones being fagged up by dog fuckers and weaboos now.

Any tips to get better hook ups with small flies on carp? I had 3 take on size 12 pheasant tail nymphs, but they just destroyed the fly without getting hooked. How can I make my flies hold up to it better? Superglue down the bottom of the fly to hold things together? Why did only one get hooked and spit the hook after only a second? Any other patterns I should try? Prince nymph? Hares ear? Are any of those more durable or more likely to get bitten?

moving to japan for school rather than literally any western school. Do you even speak japanese beyond the five words you picked up from anime? Just fucking kill yourself, degenerate.

Nope but he's on the internet on 4chan saying he's gonna move to japan (which is probably a lie in the first place) so he's pretty much guaranteed to be a weaboo.

Name one legitimate reason why someone would go to school in japan rather than in their home country aside from very specific education they might have or just because well.. they're a fucking weeb. Like you and the other guy.

Anon you seem really angry to have been born with Japanese blood. If you really want to know, I wanted to travel abroad for grad school because I worked as an assistant in a lab at one of the top schools in America and didn't like the academic environment. For research schools outside of America, University of Tokyo is pretty much the best. I could have looked at schools in the UK as well, but I've been there and to Japan and liked Japan better, and Japan is pretty much the last country that isn't being filled with muslims. On top of that, they have one of the biggest and most thriving industries in my field which means good school and work experience for me.

Also, weebs are people who blindly love all things Japanese. You're Japanese, and I think you're a fucking idiot.
>>
>>838616
Let me just pose a question. Why do you care so much?
Why don't you just let him fuck himself over then laugh privately so we tan discuss fishing instead of clogging the thread with your autistic rage?

>>
>>838745
Did you learn your lesson about riding peoples asses?
>>
>>838746
Its really not that hot, I usually get sweaty and then feel cooler than I do without anything on. No matter how much sunscreen I put on I still burn after 2 hours or so and I usually go out kayaking 8+ hours so it's not really an option to just lather up. You should try it sometime, worst comes to worst you just undress but I think you'll be surprised.
>>
>>838749
I wasn't riding his ass, I was looking behind me to merge cause he was driving like an idiot and my mirror was broken then when I looked back he was at a dead stop- no tail lights, no turn signal, no traffic in front of him. I had room to stop but I psyched myself out and only locked the rear brake, stalled, and skidded into him. Both of those were when I first got the bike and hadn't been riding or driving for a few months- I was rusty
>>
>>838756
I honestly can't believe you haven't killed yourself yet, but it's probably coming. You're a fucking idiot and whoever gave you a license let alone a bike endorsement did nothing but endanger everyone else on the road to your autistic ass.

>>

I've found that you have to let them run with it a little bit. If you try and set it right when they take it, they tend to spit it out. If you let them have it for just second longer, it'll hook better.
>>
>>838757
>I honestly can't believe you haven't killed yourself yet

Well, it has to be a jon boat. There won't be any passengers over 110lbs, so that isn't really a problem, but two places to sit is a must. I really can't seem to find any other style of boat that fits everything I need.

I suppose a coracle would also work, but not so much when it comes to room. Too much pole battling between two people I'd imagine. lol

I just tie a granny knot like this. I've never had trouble. The line doesn't pull through. I either cut my hand pulling or break the line if I really pull hard. This is for freshwater fishing.

>>838928
It really depends on where you are fishing. In freshwater you can often get away with running out of line because most fish won't break the line (exception of big stripers, big catfish obviously.) Most fish don't have the pull and instead only snap a line if you don't give the line enough springiness by having your pole angled correctly. If your pole is as close to perpendicular to the line, you can most times land fish without trouble.

Though, I suppose if you have low test line, you may have trouble. But, really though, you need high enough test to pull in your target fish that may temporarily get the line tangled around an obstruction without breaking.

In saltwater, if you run out of line, that's normally the end of the story. Hope the line snaps or the knot slips otherwise you may lose your entire pole.
>>
>>838969
Sounds like a jon boat will suit you perfectly. They really open up a world of fishing.

Yeah I never gave the buzzbaits much of a chance. Last spring was the first time I really got into topwater and the Rapala Skitter Pops were my best by far. Plus they hook up better than most topwater baits. But I had to give up on topwater by like late March.

I still hear about people going after sneks with topwater, but they seem to hit inlines the best.

If you see the Strike King Perfect Plastics frogs, grab some of those. Rig them weedless with a 4/0EWG worm hook and no hook and just run them across the weeds. I seem to do better with those things than the hollow body frogs.

Can I get some beginners advice on ice fishing? I know it's really fucking early but I won't even have time to fish until winter so I figured I'd learn to ice fish and start looking shit up now.

When's the best time to start buying ice fishing gear? I won't be able to afford an ice house of any kind so I'll be going the minimalist route, what's the best way to protect against frigid wind chills? What kind of gear should I buy?

I think I'n gonna run one of those Pond Magic buzzbaits this afternoon at a snakey lake. My only issue is the smaller ~12" sneks don't have a big mouth. Plus they don't inhale lures like bass, they like to flgeab the end and rip them away (which is why the inlines hook up pretty well). But if they strike at them, at least I know I can use them when I see a bigger snek.

I also saw these interesting spinners whn I was at Bass Pro that I want to try. Can't remember if they were Strike Kings or Booyahs, but they had a single colorado blade and the wire holding the blade was much shorter. Some name like "Rocket Shad". They still had a larger head and hook so they should hook bass fine, but the whole profile of the lure was smaller so they seem like they could work for clear(er) water or picky bass tuat don't want to go after a huge target.

Look to motorcycle shops to get a fleece balaclava and some double paned snow-mobile goggles. Those will protect your face and neck from the wind. Then from there, layers, layers, layers. I'd say buy a union suit then many layers of thin wool- it will keep you warm even if you go through the ice which is important.
Consider building cheap crampons, you can find design plans on www.instructables.com with instructions. I'd say start with a quality auger and look at the cabellas whuppin stick for a budget combo. One with 2lb and one with 6 lb should be good for everything from bluegill to walleye. Look into cheap tipups too. Consider buying some size 16 bare hooks (check the fly fishing section) for fishing a small presentation of a single maggot or waxworm. Also get some tiny floats and sinkers while you're there. Jigging spoons and other jigging lures are a staple too. Fish similar places to where you would in fall during the early season, and hit weedbeds as the season goes on. Clear ice is stronger but cloudy ice is easier to fish but always remember- no ice is safe ice. If all the ice is clear try to stay on patches of snow so you don't cast shadows.
