I was wondering if that soundfag from Massachusetts managed to record the epic t storms we've been recently having. I just missed the one at my house by a day. I knew I should have caught a earlier flight.

Also t storm thread. Post pics you might have and tell of your experiences.

That's me. It pains me dearly but I have not, for various reasons. The first one (which was beautiful) happened when I was a couple towns away at a friend's house, the second one happened when it was like 98% humidity, I'd taken my mics out earlier that day and they malfunctioned horribly because of the humidity so I had to shut them down. They can be damaged permanently if it's too humid and you're running phantom power through them.

The one tonight I could have gotten except my asspee neighbor is running a gasoline generator which would ruin any recording within a at least a couple miles. HOWEVER we have storms in the forecast for the next week or so and I will be ready and available to record them.

I'm sorry anon, as you know my story and how I've been trying to get a perfect storm for like 3 summer the frustration is real.

Damn, didn't expect you to see this thread so fast. I'm the CT anon that is looking forward to you recording one. I made this thread after checking your channel to see if you uploaded anything.
It will all line up and you'll get a fantastic recording. Hang in there, I can't wait to play it through my stereo.
And what's phantom power?
Btw call your neighbor and ask him to kill his generator for a bit.

Couple good ones earlier this summer.
Good one in Wisconsin after this flight landed. Would have loved to stop and watch it for a while, but I also wanted to get to the hotel and sleep...
>>
Got this huge storm out north Jersey but I'm central jersey and can see it clearly, no sound, but can see plenty of light. According to the weather radar its like 30 miles from here. That normal?
>>
>>836465
>I made this thread after checking your channel to see if you uploaded anything.
Fug that makes me sad. Sorry bro! I'll get something this week for sure. Phantom power is the 48v that you need to supply to a condenser mic to polarize the mic element. when it's very humid, or worse, wet, the voltage doesn't fluctuate the way it's supposed to from the vibrating diaphram because it's actually able to leak out on its own - through the moisture in the air - and it makes for crackling popping audio and build-up of static, which attracts particles and dust as well and it's just a bad time.

>Btw call your neighbor and ask him to kill his generator for a bit.
eh his ~75yr old wife's got pneumonia or something and their current AC trips their breaker so apparently he's using the generator to run the AC so she's comfortable. Idunno man. rumor is they're getting it fixed.

I have been getting screwed by thunderstorms a lot lately while fishing. I always go out in the afternoon though and that is summer in South Florida. Lots of cool lighning tonight, a little storm was brewing just offshore all afternoon and hit land just as the sun was going down. Normally they build over the Everglades and head towards the ocean in the PM so today was odd. The ones coming off the ocean usually happen early in the AM.

The storms and lightning are cool but I can't wait for the fall.

Reposting old shit is for /b/ and /pol/.

The hail this storm produced was unpleasant to ride through. Trails afterwards were amazing... traction for days.
>>
>>836481
Yeah, I'm probably a little too excited waiting for you to get a good recording lol.
Thanks for the answer, it makes sense.

I can see why that would ruin a fishing trip.

Craziest shit i've ever seen though... thundersnow.

Late-season ride, heading back to the trailhead in the afternoon. Storm started moving in, wind kicked up, spit a little bit of snow, little bit of graupel... flash off to my 4-oclock, then ... the sky "growled".
Snow absorbs the sound of thunder so when you're in a thundersnow-storm it's very localized, there may be a storm a mile or two away but you'll never hear it.

Needless to say, we picked up the pace after that.

I think so. Saw a far away storm this summer that the lightning show was clear as day but I couldn't hear it.

At first it was a "What the fuck was that??", like I was seeing shit.
Radio'd up front, "You see that?" "...Yeah, was that lightning?" just before the roar.
First time I'd ever seen it in person, but I'd heard of it before, know a few others that have been in it. Very rare though. "Thundersnow, it's time to get moving".
I don't think we stopped till we were back at the truck (3-4 miles).

DigrPat here, I've got a backlog of about 100 hours of recordings that need to be reviewed and edited. Mainly stripping out aircraft noise. July 28 I captured some storms with pic related setup. What MJC Recordings said about humidity is particularly scary.
2 hours of that rainy session is here: https://youtu.be/UBVeqFYJiEI
longer version here: https://archive.org/details/160728

>>

I can't check-out your recordings just now but I will scour through later tonight for sure!

And don't worry *too* much about the humidity with the Sony. The small mics in our portable recorders are electret condensers and have a permanently charged backplate so the voltage flow to run the mic itself is extremely low - probably a volt or two drawing <1mA, which means there's basically no electron leak, and no static buildup, and it's just not much of an issue the way it is for 48v/3mA true condensers.

But the humidity-hates-electronics-generally still applies of course..!

Hell i've haven't made it through the zing recording without falling asleep. the cloud burst/ white noise puts me out until the thunder later. I would have adjusted levels down to keep rainy ambience going but was 25 miles away during most of this recording.

It's impressive you got one at all. It's luck to get one I thought because of how fast they are and how slow or reaction times are. Then whatever shutter speed is I guess.

This the /srg/ thread?

Currently recording some nighttime ambience. No monster gas wells roaring miles away tonight. I literally have the mic hanging by a thread out the window just so it can be hooked to my main PC for extra power.

Sure! Zoom H6 is nice. What's the signal flow here though? Using onboard mics and an external pre?

Well, had to cut the recording a little short. Winds picked up and there's some sprinkles. I got nearly an hour of audio. There's also some insect that was blaring loud in the first half. Here's a sound bite from it.
