Just got my Maine trappers license and was planning to do a few Coyote sets, a bunch of culvert sets (because duke 5' traps are cheap) and MAYBE an attempt to snare a bear and spear it.

I'll probably shoot that last one depending on how much balls i can muster and how big it is. The spear i've got is 8 feet but still, i'll probably pussy out on the bear and use a handgun.

The problem is the guys who bear bait to use their hounds to track them down just set up shop in my territory, i can smell that shit half a mile down wind. Basically imagine a open mass grave and you'll understand the smell. Dead Coyotes, rotten meat and rotten seafood spilled out of a 55 gallon drum.

I don't mind them doing this (i plan to trap a Bear myself, i encourage it) but it is where there are a bunch of timber piles that are prime coyote/Fox trapping areas.

If i set up my traps then for the weekend that they bring in their dogs for Bear hunting i'm going to be harvesting hunting dogs and pissed off seasonal hunters.

I don't want to be a dick but this isn't their land, it is common land owned by my road association. They are using our common land and they don't own it nor do they have rights besides the fact that a road association member gave them access.
>>
>>834107
Put up warning signs in all the parking areas and within range of the traps that there are coyote traps that could potentially injure hunting dogs.

Mark the traps well for humans to see.
>>
>>834107
If one of the hunting dogs bites your face off, oh well, it's not your land, it's owned by your road association. You are a dick just by virtue of trapping. I'm a hunter but trapping is a slow painful death for the animal. We're not living in 1700

Tell me, which one is more natural, clearing land, setting up oil fields, destroying habitat for wild animals, pumping the oil and end up processing it at another facility and eventually coming up with synthetic material that will not deteriorate for some time. Or a guy trapping fur, putting it up and shipping it off to be tanned/made into a garment for warmth. Man has been wearing fur for thousands and thousands of years, it isn't going anywhere.

My trapping association builds hundreds of nest boxes to aid in building pine marten populations, what do you do for conservation? Shitpost on /out/?

Who gives a fuck what some animal rights nut thinks? You people know nothing about game management, population control or anything to do with the outdoors. Not only are your people absurdly uneducated about actual science you get laughed off by the 95% of humanity that does use animal products.

You eat anything with flavor in it, wear perfume or any kind of makeup? Every one of those uses trapping products. I'd say you are a hypocrite but most vegans are ugly and smell like shit so probably not.

Foot traps leave the animal to suffer. It doesn't matter if it break skin or bone. How about you put your foot in a vice and tighten it down to the point that you can't escape then either starve or freeze to death? That seems very sporting
>>
>>834959
most (99.99%) leather comes from farm raised and domesticated animals that are instantaneously killed by a bolt gun rather than left to suffer

The problem with trappers is they're motivated by only one thing CASH. With the possible exception of beavers, furbearers don't need population control, their numbers are always in balance. Every trapper I've ever meet is a loser who can't hold down a regular job and wants unreported income. They carry garnishments and back-support that make normal employment unprofitable. I see no reason that nature should pay the cost of supporting these lowlifes

Traps are typically checked everyday. Most times early in the morning. Majority of fur bearers are nocturnal so they don't spend that long inna trap.
>>
>>835616
>Don't need population control
Even if this were true and people didn't trap because of it all these fur bearers would still probably die. Why? Because the number one cause of death is automobiles for these animals. I just see it as I'm saving them from getting hit by a car and being wasted to rot away in the sun on the side of the road.

I've met hundreds if not thousands of trappers, your post is far from the truth. If they were so motivated by money, why are they still trapping in the current fur market? They all are losing lots of money.

Trapping is one of the oldest trades known to man, it is one of the most /out/ activities and it's a shame that redditfags have to ruin everything. This is the 5th or 6th post on trapping I've seen on this board and it's flooded with memes and macros with poor arguments against it. Can't wait for the next post, only going to be more reddit fags. Time to make an /out/ board on &_chan

I don't trap therefore I had no need to check traps. I worked with a hillbilly technician that used to give too much information about his trapping excursions. He checked them only on the weekends; i.e. 168 hours hence causing suffering. Trappers are heartless trash
>>
>>836262
If I lived in a society that revered trees to that extent then I would understand that it was I who transgressed. The vast majority of people are against trapping and the more they learn about it the less they support it. You don't care cause it's traditional, so is raping and pillaging neighboring people. Society has moved on. I abide by the norms of the society that exists today you don't cause you're a sub-human piece of shit. What part of that flies over your head like a 7 fucking 47?

"In his 1933 book Game Management, Aldo Leopold, one of the pioneers of wildlife management as a science, defined it as "the art of making land produce sustained annual crops of wild game for recreational use"."

Yup, this is basically the extent to which rednecks care about wildlife and wildlife management. Deer, coyotes, beaver, these species are valid targets of population control, but what the redneck really cares about is bloodlust. He will kill any small furbearing animal, and what is his reasoning? "To protect muh pheasants and wabbits!" But what is he really trying to protect? Just another form of bloodlust recreation. He wants high wabbit and game birds species so that he has more small animals to kill, not because it is ecologically necessary. He wants more pictures of terrified animals caught in traps to masturbate to similar to a serial killer photographing his victims. OP says he wants to spear a bear, this is illegal and psychopathic, then he expects us to believe the rest of the foul sophistry he spews.

>>
>>837273
Yeah fur trapping hasn't been profitable for over a decade.
>>
>>837278
Then why are people still doing it?
>>
>>837279
Muskrat and Beaver taste delicious and they make cool hats. There's not really any other way of getting them and I understand that you disagree with 'getting them' at all, but I don't think anybody really cares honestly. It's just not significant or prevalent enough to be an issue with any momentum.
>>
>>836797
There is absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying hunting. There is everything wrong with condemning someone because you disagree with something basic as hunting. Are you a vegan? Because if you aren't the thousands of animals I've killed had a fair chance, unlike those from factory farming in those chicken nuggets you love so much.
>>
>>837278
HA BULLSHIT, 4 years ago people were making BANK. One guy caught a thousand fox in 50 days at a 60+dollar average. Several people caught 1,000+coon at a 30+dollar average plus all the mink and rats they caught. Some were catching 300+ marten at a 150+ average. "No money in the past decade" haven't laughed my ass off that hard in a while. The ONLY thing thing people will still have a chance of making money at is muskrats but very few will do it, very, very few.
>>
>>837279
Why do people still hunt after market hunting was banned? Why do people fish for fun if they aren't making money?
>>
>>836554
Wow, you met one guy out of hundreds of thousands that is unethical, they must all be unethical. You're one anti, out of hundreds of thousands, and you make a blanket statement off of experience with one individual, I suppose all antis are as stupid as you.
>>
>>837523
Problem with this statement is its scewed by those up north that have animals with higher fur quality and density. It should also be noted just because some sells something at some perceived high price that isn't all profit. Fuel, lures, depreciation, and baits all cost money. Lets not forget about thw time it takes to find a good place to set, checking and maintaining the trap line, then skinning and fleshing after a catch. I wish coons around here were worth $30. I've heard some going that high, but these aren't the norm. I've caught somewhere around 50 coons and only one would have the potential to have that high of a value.
>>
>>837540
Yet again, 4 years ago people were making money. Even with expenses they were still making money want to know how I know this? Because I know these people. They aren't hobby trappers like you, they do it for a living. Even with southern fur people were making money. Let's say an average day on a professional southern line is 5 beaver, a grey fox, a coyote, a bobcat, an otter and 5 coon. At that current time the beaver could have easily gotten 20 each, the grey 20, the bobcat 50, the otter 70, the coon 15. That's 315 dollars a day ON AVERAGE. I have no idea what kind of expenses you have but there is no way it's over 150 bucks a day. So thats 165 bucks a day profit. 7 days a week and that's 1155 a week.
>>
>>837549
>>837549
I think your problem is you been around these so called "pros" and you somehow think you are one too. Regardless hearsay isn't something I make a habit of believing.

Also the NAFA averages from 2012 disagree with your statements. I would post them in a SS but thread reached image limit.
>>
>>834884
hello
>>
>>836797
Spearing a bear that has been caught in a foot snare is perfectly legal.
>>
>>837580
4 years ago was 2012, the fur caught in the 2012 season was auctioned February of 2013. The averages I gave aren't far off one bit considering the smart people that put up those numbers are doing so in January-early march before they move back up north and rack up numbers of spring beaver.
http://www.nafa.ca/wild-fur-auction-reports/
>>
Actual trapper here. Got in this line of work after being screwed over by lawyers. The bac meter was rigged and I had no insurance. Anywho things were grate then fur prices fell rock bottom. I supplement my income selling live yotes to a outfit in Tenn. They got dog fightin down there and city slickers pay to shoot them.
>>
>>836652
So if the majority of people don't like it, you shouldn't do it? Literally tyranny of the masses.

Also it's laughable that you're arguing that people should care about trapping but shouldn't care about deforestation.

The double standards of you idiots is hilarious and you will never argue further than 'muh feels'
>>
>>837417
>there is absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying killing and death and suffering

Lol wut?

With the exception of a handful of animal derived base products (which come usually from farmed animals and not trapped ones) the majority of products traditionally derived from animals have been switched to synthetic sources with the rise of industrial chemical engineering and scales that go far beyond what could be supplied by wild populations.

What does science have to do with trapping for profit?

If you followed your own advice, you'd know that science is at a point where we know animals suffer tremendously in traps.
>>
Funny story.
Friend caught a fox in a trap.
Went up and popped its neck.
Was carrying it out and had to climb over a fence.
Tossed the fox over the fence, soon as it hit the ground it must have popped his neck back into place- fox jumped up and ran off.
Friend has seen the same fox a few times, I swear the bastard taunts him. Pretty funny.
>>
>>842714
No they don't. Also, don't bring science into an idea like suffering. Suffering is not empirical. Aswell, the culling is only allowed if the environment is deemed, by biologists to be able to support such a cull. The value from the cull has nothing to do with the environment as it is a free market and people simply wish to buy from sonething that is clearly not permanent i.e. a good deal

There is nothing evil about it.

Also, did you enjoy your 24 hour ban?
