Any one with minnow trap experience?
So basically I bought a regular metal mesh minnow trap and a small mason jar style minnow trap. Every time I go to my local state park to fish, I use both traps and same bait (dog food) to catch live bait, but what's strange is that the mason jar one catches the minnows and the other one doesn't for some reason. My buddies tell me maybe the minnows are eating the bait from the bottom outside the trap and don't have to go in for the bait. What can i do? Any suggestions?

this design looks really simple, if it isn't working the fix should come to you just by looking at it.
could also be bad luck.
Take some string and tie the bait in a way that it stays in the center of the cage? Like, suspended from two sides.

The holes in the metal one are probably too large. I've had that problem with some that I made. You can use a bit of hardware cloth or metal screen to make the holes smaller and try it.
Suspending the bait using string also helps as >>829717 suggests. Just make a little bait bag from a plastic garlic bag.
I always use a can of wet cat food. I just pop the top open to make a hole and throw it in. It'll usually last all night (I set mine at night so I have fresh bait in the morning) and will attract just about anything.

that is what I always used as a kid with these things and would catch a full thing of chubs everytime
Change your bait, cut up a fish you catch and throw it in. When I gut suckers I toss the heap of guts in the trap and the next day I have a trap full of minnows and crayfish.
