let's talk about backpacks.

backpacks, briefcases, duffels, good luggage combinations and brands. also discussion of different types of bags and their ergonomic strongpoints; which bags fit which carried tech; etc.

i know this is from reddit, but no reddit-tier edc circlejerking or bag bragging allowed.

i got btfo'd out of /g/ in record time, can you guys help me out? i need a new pack for my school stuff because i actually have textbooks this semester and my old bag sucks for it. i also wanted to talk in general, but i already got yelled at on /g/ so i'll expose my thinly veiled request thread for what it is now.

No one cares how your backpack looks. That said, just get a jansport or ll bean and be done with it. It's a school backpack literally anything will work

anyone have any suggestions for something like cocoon packs, but translated to pockets instead of straps? i need a bag that has good compartmentalization, but i don't like the general style of the cocoon bag itself. also, cocoon is a bit expensive for me since i already have a dedicated /out/ bag for when i go hiking and camping.

the reason i need good organisation is my part time job is IT and maintenance stuff at my university. i am, in sorts, on call for many hours at a time, so i carry my schoolwork and laptop around as well as a multitool, a socket set, music gear for jogging, and a rainjacket basically all the time. i broke a mouse the other day and decided that i need an upgrade in size, strength, and organization. my current bag is a noname bag i got at a goodwill

all that said, i've been checking out the timbuk2 rogue. however, i don't know if i am paying for the 'style' or if the quality warrants the price. i like the idea of a floptop so i can get going quickly, but the one compartment style is what led me to break my mouse, not to mention pencils every day. i've also looked at targus a lot but with how cheap they are i have doubts about durability

That guy's backpack is really cool

>>
>>828112
No offense, but you're kind of retarded if you spend more than $100 on a backpack. I have the Patagonia Yerba 24L and it's great. They also make it in a fancy turquoise but it was sold out.
>>

Got a jansport because I saw one that was really cool, faggot. Now I'm cool too

im considering this one for a daypack. does anyone has experiance with the osprey quasar?
>>
as i mentioned, $80 (timbuk2 rogue)is already pushing it for me. thanks for the suggestion though
>>828120

dude, i suggested a discussion about different types of backpacks and their application for outdoor urban use, which entails durability, weatherproof materials, and ease of access weighed against stability. have a pleasant discussion thay doesn't rely on reactionary retorts for once in your life.

Backpacks are not specific to urban, desert or mountain, unless you are a camofag.
Any backpack will survive decades of rough use anyway.
Being waterproof is not a priority if you stay innatown.
One day packs ARE light and stables. All of them.

My dad recently gave me his old bag that he used in the 80s and I've been fixing it up. I want to get a rain cover for it but I haven't been able to find any information about the size, any ideas?
It's from Caribou Mountineering
>>
>>828229
>rain cover

>>
>>828236
Well it's going to be taking quite a bit of abuse when winter comes around and hunting season starts, what i'm really looking for is a snow cover, something that conforms around it better than a tarp
>>
>>828129
Have this pack. comfortable enough.
>>828150
Just put them on and check which is the most comfortable for you. If they have the same comfort level then go by price.

Quasar may be too big for you, I would have gotten a smaller one but I also use it for day hikes.
>>
>>828112
I could build an upper-tier PC for the price I could pay for some fabrics stitched together with some pockets. What the actual fuck.

>>
>>828736
depends on the rest of your gear.
Pack as if you're going and see if it fits.

Why do I have to spell this out to people?
>>
>>828112
City pack: burton shredscout
Riding/skating pack: an older shredscout
Day hike pack: some rei 15L
Camping pack: tnf banchee
Work bag: some leather briefcase an old lawyer at my office passed on to me. It's really fucking nice.

I recommend any of these. If it's for school the shredscout had a laptop slot, cooler pack, tons of space, and a built in rainfly
>>
>>828115
I have a Spire and it is my favourite backpack.
>>
>>828829
I know it depends on my fit, but generally talking, i'm neither a heavy packer nor an ultralight packer, and i haven't acquired some of the stuff that i'm gonna pack in the bag yet, i have a 40L bag as well, so i felt that it isn't justifiable to buy another bag for an added 25L only.

What's the consensus on mil-tec assault packs? I'm looking for something in that kind of size range for a pretty minimalist overnight/weekender kit, basically just a sleeping bag, mat, bivvy (and then the obvious cookset, stove, toiletries, spare socks, and the usual suspects)

It's really cheap (almost too cheap at £25-30, building my camping shit from scratch and don't have any money), and most reviews say it's excellent, but there's a couple of negative ones claiming the stitching comes away, colours run in the first rain, etc.

Otherwise, any alternatives in that size range that are affordable and durable?

Pic unrelated.

The first one looks like a waste of money.

The second one? Kathmandu is a shitty company that makes overpriced shit, for that much you could get

http://www.bivouac.co.nz/gear/camping-and-tramping/packs/osprey-mens-kestrel-68.html
Or you could wait for a sale at Bivouac (good folks there who actually go /out/) and get the Aether or the Atmos 65 from them. Osprey warranty is godtier and the packs are light and well made.

You've also got Macpac with some of their packs but I cannot attest to their quality or warranty, I'm also hesitant to recommend them when they tried to argue with me about a pair of Superfeet insoles and their 60 day warranty even though it was 2 days and I had tried them on ONCE, with no signs of wear.

The Urban Prepper EDC v3.0 pack is awesome for EDC/tools/compartments, if a bit pricey at $120. I forget the name of the actual pack though. Search for the video on JooTube. I really like his use of subdividing things into modules as well. And the color coding will appeal to your autism.

All I need is a durable backpack for college, but there are a billion different options that all look pretty quality.

Guys I'm heading back to school and I need a tactical ergonomic assault pack to navigate the urban wasteland.

Requirements
>urban multicam for stealth (most architecture in my area is sandstone or limestone)
>quick access laptop compartment (I plan to do a lot of hacking and network infiltration missions)
>water-proof compartments (to prevent condensation from Mountain Dew cans getting on my Nintendo DS)
>No excess straps or cords (increases drag when sprinting, pic related)

I'm buying a butterfly knife for self-defense this month. Is it possible to line to pockets with tin-foil to prevent metal detectors from seeing it?

Max budget is $35

Don't buy it, I once bought a m65 military jacket from mil-tec and after wearing it for 2 weeks a lot of the stitching started to come loose, after 3 weeks the cotton lining detached itself completely from the jacket. The outer fabric itself also rips super easy although it is quiet thick. In total i wore it maybe 30 days, of which maybe 8 days rough use, but i had to throw it away cause it was beyond repair already. Even the thin material of a cheap ALDI or chinese import single wall tent is stronger than the thick polly cotton on that jacket. It's almost as if they would not just buy materials from the lowest bidder, but deliberately went out of their way to find the least durable materials out there.

Fuck that brand really

Don't buy it

>>
>>839940
yeah buddy, you definitely could. I would definitely make use of the bottom straps to hold rolled up rain gear/tarp/sleeping pad whatever can fit. If you were careful with what food you packed you maybe could eek out more than an overnighter.

You're more than likely going to catch flak from gear-queers on this forum telling you your pack is tacti-cool or that because it isn't ideal for your exact purposes you're going to suffer and have a horrible time. But that's /out/ for ya.

I of course am saying that you could use this pack so long as you're intending to do pretty normal hiking (no mountaineering or what have you) and that you won't be going out in the dead of winter. One of my favorite mid-summer light weight and compact sleeping blankets is the USGI poncho liner- I've used it in similar setups to what you're trying to do.

Best of luck homie. Be sure to take and post pics if you do it.

My brother was an exchange student in Germany a couple of years ago. He brought me pic related as a present.

Its a Gebirgsjagers ruck - german army mountain troops. I looked it up and it seems like there are tons of repros out there. But mine is an original one - sturdy as fuck. Has about 35l

Basically its the ideal pack (imho!) for two days of hiking and camping. I really love it. But as stocks seems to dry, I may order myself another one as spare. They are cheap in Naziland.

The only con: it was designed with the strange german sleeping mat in mind. Its not rolled but folded and serves as back padding.

So what I did: I bought a cheap mat at Walmart and cut it down so it fits the compartment. Works like a charm.

Abisko 65l, straightforward looking backpack with some great features like the height adjustable and removable compression straps and the molded bottom. Was between this one and the Osprey Atmos AG, my friends dad who works for Fjällräven as agent in my country had this exact model as sample model and I got it for half the price and went with it. When I'm hunting I carry 3 packs. 1 backpack and 2 dufflebags. The backpack carries everything until I shoot a deer. Then I unpack the dufflebags & butchering gear, butcher the deer and stuff the meat into the dufflebags to carry home. I can hang the dufflebags on the frame of the backpack when I'm walking. I can kill 2-3 deer and stuff the meat like this before I finally go home for the night or reach the base camp.

I'll take a guess at "no." It very well could be, but I paid 10 dollars for it at a Harbor Freight not too long ago and paracord wrapped the handle. Hasn't properly been /out/ yet. If Granfors Bruks is a quality name, I'd be willing to bet what I picked up is not Granfors Bruks.

I am actually in the same dilemma as you were, although I can't get anything half price :(

Did you have a chance to test the backpack with multiday hikes/heavier loads? I read on various forums that Fjallravens don't handle heavier loads well, so based on that I am leaning more towards Osprey.

Problem is, in my eastern yuropoor country we don't have reps for these brands so I'll have to order them online without testing them.

Any feedback would be appreciated, ty.

Unfortunately I didn't have the chance to test it over a longer hike with a heavy load. Heaviest I carried was around 18Kg and it didn't feel uncomfortable at all. When I first adjusted the shoulder straps with that velcro it felt kinda sketchy, but once I had it on my back you wouldn't notice any of this.
Just in theory I'd think that the Anti-Gravity carrying system would get too soft and mushy for very heavy loads, but is much more comfortable with regular loads. I am although a very big fan of the front opening lid, wouldn't wanna miss that again on bigger backpacks.

This is what I usually carry everyday but I forgot to list some books. Overall its not a lot, but I haven't tried carrying more things. I also can put a small folded adult sized poncho inside in case I get caught in the rain. You can adjust the straps so that you can have more space to put things in. But if you need more space then I recommend a jansport backpack thats atleast 32L.

>you dont need an external frame in a 35L pack
Yeah I don't really *need* it. It's just cheap and simple, no pointless tacticool stuff.

Besides, isn't the LK 35 (external frame, 35L) a popular choice for /out/doors? pic related
>>
>>844748
I spend my summers hiking 20km + a day around mountains while I do research. Theres no way I would ever bother with an external frame as its just unnecessary weight. The frame itself is "pointless tacticool stuff" when its in that size/weight class. Sure if you're going to be putting 25kg worth of stuff in that small pack then it would have a point, but not for everyday use.

I use a 35L Kathmandu Canetoad and when thats not enough for my gear I use a 65L Black Wolf pack. got them for $10 and $40, respectively (thats inflated aussie dollars too). Both bags have lasted years and will probably last years more.

Lighter, better, more appropriate bags can be had for much less.
>>
>>844755
Yep my issue is I currently have no middle ground: a small EDC backpack for the city and then straight up to 65+ for long trips. Nothing intermediate and simple for short trips. Things are inflated here too (south america) and the options very poor.

Alright then, I'll keep searching. Thanks for the input
>>
>>844772
Get it if you want; but at 35L most of the internal frame ones will be significantly lighter (The CaneToad I use is literally just a one conpartment canvas sack with very very minimal frame).

If you want the frame, get it. They do have a nice look (if thats you're aesthetic). but I just go for the best price and weight combination I can find.
>>
It's arguable that a 35L even needs a frame unless you're carrying tools, a lot of water or something else really heavy.
>>
>>842161
I remember reading that.
Considering I took it to Utah, which has next to no running water that I would recommend swimming in, probably not. Though it could be mine after someone else had fun with it.

Gets me everywhere, takes a normal 15" laptop and a bunch of gear on top.
32 liters might be a bit excessive even, but I don't mind the "extra" weight/space since the carrying system itself is bretty gud under any weight, light or heavy.
>>
>>844748
Popular? No. It has its fans, but I wouldn't call it popular. A.L.I.C.E. is probably the most popular milsurp on /out/, but most use retail or new tacticool packs.

>>
>>828298
It's about quality of fabrics, stitching, whether or not it was made in the first world etc. This affects durability and how it ages

A lot of the more expensive ones on this chart are from fashion brands/designers, a lot of time and money goes into picking out proportions, making really fine details, and many times making custom materials for a small batch of items, all of which drive the price up

That $800 pack there is from a Japanese designer, it's not really an outdoor/school bag (though it would clearly fit the bill) it's more for people who make a hobby of fashion and spend a ton of money putting together concept outfits

The LL Bean Quad is durable enough to handle three years of high school, three of college and every summer in between as my work bag at a summer camp. I've got the earlier version without the webbing on the upper outer pouch, but I doubt much else has changed. It's comfy enough for school commuting usage. Stuffed to the gills, it serves as a bag for a 3-4 day trip and is still carry on size. Not the best shape for extended hiking, but that was never it's intended role. I just wish sophomore me would've chosen the black over the green. Black goes with everything after all!

Upgraded from my 45L Kelty of 8+ years to the Atmos 65L. Did a 30 mile hike on the AT this weekend through the Narrows. I never felt unbalanced, the pack hugged at my hips and there was plenty of room for gear. The "anti-gravity" feature is legit, I would recommend it.

I'm in desperate need of a backpack that would look good in an urban setting but would still fit enough inside.

Like 40-50 liters would be excellent. Any tips or brands?
>>
>>856376
No dude, have you been to van? All these rich kids have millionaire/billionaire parents from Hong Kong, they get their shit from Canada and the USA
>>
>>856026
Is fjallreven actually good? Was looking into getting some hiking gear and their clothing is really cheap here.
>>
I am looking for a daypack for hiking 10-15km trails in the Ardeche (france). I have two jackets from Fjallraven and love the brand and quality so my first thought was to get something made by them. This led me to the Friluft Lappland 35 (pic related) which goes nice with my Fjallraven hunting jacket (boar). It costs 175 euro dollahs, which i find high in comparison to cheaper options but i like the ascetics and the brand. Also i dont mind paying extra for something that will last longer.

After reading this thread there was a lot of butt hurt about the >100$ prices. So i am quite aware that this is a luxery option.

I checked out the 24L Patagonia pack and since i live in the Netherlands the 40 euro price holds true for me. It doesnt really look as comfortable or technically advanced (gimmick, compartments + materials choices)

My questions:
1) If money isnt a main concern, why should i still not buy it?
2) Since i will be doing most hiking during the summer, does the pack ventilate well enough?

Bergans Powerframe vs Norröna Recon.

Any fellow Norwegians with input on which is best?
>>
>>857106
I got a Norrona Recon, bought it on sale from XXL. Really satisfied with it, very comfortable hip belt that moves with the hips, so you don't easily get bruises on your hips from long hikes.
Sturdy back panel, good amount of customization.

Keep in mind it's pretty big tho, 125L.

Haven't tried the other one, saw other forums recommending the Recon, so I bought it, considering the price.
>>
>>857020
So, sleeping bag, pad and tarp on the outside? What are you planning on putting on the inside?
>>
>>857144
Well, i'd jam it inside if it fist.
Food, clothes, gear, mess kit etc. Planing on backpacking and camping for a couple of months
>>
>>857144
Seriously. I put my tent on the outside, or a tarp if I'm using one, but sleeping bag and pad should go on the inside.

If he's using a foam pad, not an inflatable, it'll have to go outside though.

I think you will have plenty of room for tying a few things down if you get creative. It doesn't look particularly sturdy and I would spend more than $30 on something I was using for 'long term hiking'. The last thing you want id your pack falling apart 20 miles in and then have to pay even more $ for something at a brick and mortar outfitter, assuming you lug all your gear there.

I have something similar, the High Sierra Titan 75L. It is bigger than I really need but it can be tightened down when I have less stuff in it and it feels really sturdy. I have had it almost a year now with no issues. There are also more points to attach things to than the Karrimore you posted. It retails for about $125+ but I got mine on sale online for like $60 shipped or something close to that. Pic related, except mine is black. Trailmate has the green.

I have it and it's fucking awesome. I use it for work. It stores my laptop, powerbrick, lock and so on. It also stores several notepads, loads of small rubbish and my keycard. I load it up pretty heavily, and it's still one of the most comfortable packs I know of.

I cycle to and fro mwork wearing this pack most days. It's about 35 minutes in each direction. I am still happy with this pack after using it daily for a couple of months.

So got for it, man. It's pretty awesome.

Hey guys, I need a decently cheap ($100 or less? I'm willing to go higher if not possible) backpack to use when me and the wife go camping. I need to be able to carry a smallish 3 person tent, sleeping bag, mat, and other basic camping odds and ends + a little bit of food. I live in the PNW, so water resistance would be a plus but in this price range I know it's a little iffy.

Make sure it's a decent one. cheapest decent one I've seen is LAPG's 3 day pack. Don't get stuff from more civvie brands like Rothco or Nike. That stuff is more for style than actual use. Nobody with those Nike SB bags even knows what the molle is for "it just looks lit", therefore manufacturer doesn't care to make it too functional anyway.
>>
>>856098
Made in USA. It's one of those cases where you're actually paying more for less features, as if it is a benefit. Gorucks goal is to have a military pack that doesn't look too military and blend in to civvie life. So since there isn't much competition in this area, they can charge like crazy.

>>856883>>857004
The kanken definitely is. It's cringe worthy seeing people stuff shit ton of stuff in those things and see the thin straps dig into their body's. well I seem to be the only one here but I went with a deuter bag after thinking it through earlier in the year. Specifically the Deuter rise pro which is a 34L that extends to about 42L mountaineering pack apparently. Of the kinds I tried I only felt like Mammut and Deuter were really comfortable for me. The Mammuts were pretty basic but the deuter rise series had lots of attachment points and were pretty versatile and well made. I went with the smaller pro because you can open it at the back to get at whatever without totally unloading the thing. Size is a tad small but most of my gear is pretty compact. I'd say it's good for a weekend trip comfortably. It also has that internal rubberized coating which I also liked. Everything about the bags just said to me well made. The rise tour 45+ was also in the running but I got the pro for a decent price. It ended up being a just big enough size though for my needs.
