Is there any reason not to just use a pairing knife while out?

What are you guys doing that you require such large knives?
>>
>>826457
Your pictured Wusthof is about the same length as my hunting knives but lacks any sort of belly, 1.4116 is a pretty lacklustre steel too.

>Would not /out/ / 10
>>
>>826462
I just took a picture of a standard pairing knife. I don't understand why people need a specific knife for going /out/ if they already have kitchen cutlery.

Unless you are skinning an animal, what is the benefit? There has to be some reason because outdoors knife companies seem to have a larger market than just hunters.

Use you're ferro rods like pic related and you can start a fire and keep that edge sharp at the same time!
>>
>>826467

1) Sheaths. Kitchen knives don't come with any.

2) Thicker blade stock so that the knife is suitable for harder use tasks than a paring knife.

3) Scandi grinds are better suited for wood carving, for people who focus on that.

4) Wanting steels with good toughness (rules out most ultra high hardness Japanese kitchen cutlery) and good heat treats (rules out most utter dogshit heat treated Western kitchen cutlery).

5) A desire for more hand filling high traction handles and better hand-guarded designs for hard use.

Should I continue?

Generally kitchen cutlery is made of pretty rubbish steel, low carbon, soft temper - unless people go out of their way to buy nice kitchen cutlery. It's nearly always thin stock and ground with a very shallow edge angle which is great for slicing kitchen duties, and would work well for game dressing purposes(blade shape is another matter) it's not exactly designed to be durable though and any sort of rough work will give the average kitchen knife a hell of a time.

So in short it's a combination of design, blade shape/edge angles and materials, highly stain resistant but soft steels, designed to handle the rigours of dishwashers and expected to be pulled through kitchen V notch sharpeners.

If you wanted a cheap outdoor knife you'd be better off with something like an Old Hickory from Ontario, a Dexter Russel or a Mora depending on your intended use. All of these have steels and HT better suited to rougher outdoor use, they're all also significantly lighter on average than similar sized kitchen knives if that's a concern.
>>
>>826476
Thanks, but what exactly is the "rougher outdoor use." Personally the only time I use a knife while out is for food prep.

Are you telling me people are using stuff like this >>826420 to whittle?
>>
>>826478

>>
>>826478
>but what exactly is the "rougher outdoor use." Personally the only time I use a knife while out is for food prep.
I think you've answered your own question to a degree, outdoor use depends on the person to a large extent. For me rougher outdoor use would generally consist of game prep, others like to practice firelighting skills or as you mentioned whittle objects.

Where did you go? I have that same problem too. Dick's has a few Kershaws. Bass Pro has a decent selection and lots of CRKTs which I don't mind but they are a little expensive. And then there is a big gun shop I stopped in one day and they actually had a few Esees and other cool shit but very limited selection and prices were kinda high.

I want to check out more gun shops but when you go into them and aren't jerking off on the new Glock, the people working there are useless and no help at all. Seems like that at every gun shop I have been to.

generally i either like to have a smaller knife like a helle paired with an axe and an auger. while im out i use all of these things to build shelter and then make things like a chair and a bench.

as for bigger knives some people prefer not to carry an axe and dont require the precision of a small knife so they just use a kukri or something

I just think CRKT has some of the coolest designs in that price range, especially for fixed blades. Kershaw has a lot of cool folders in that range but I don't see many fixed blades from them. Gerber doesn't have much that caught my eye and the Bear stuff is what you see most often. And then there is SOG with their tacticool stuff.

There are a few other smaller brands in the $25-$50 range but most of it is online and I prefer to see stuff like that IRL before I buy it.

Freehand.

Scandi grinds are really easy to freehand because you have such a wide bevel to lay on the stone.

What types of stone(s) would be appropriate depends on how coarse or fine you typically prefer your edges.

If you need to ask that question the answer is Mora Companion carbon.

If you're going to buy an expensive knife make sure it has all the things you want. Otherwise the money is wasted. I'm not sure what other 'bushcrafters' are doing with their knives but the longer I use my Mora the more I feel I don't need anything better. There are some custom knives I'd like to have, but they all cost more than $230.

You need a special stone(s) for that. If you have a serrated knife maybe you should sell it to some retard and buy one with a plain edge. A Lansky kit I have has a stone for serrated blades, never used it since I have no serrated knives.

If you have no money, wet sanding paper can be used if you can find or make an object with the right shape. If you have an old plastic ruler just round the edge and use duck tape or similar to keep the sanding paper on place.
>>
>>827980

In that case I'm fairly certain that the Edge Pro Apex is probably the only viable choice for a fully guided system that can go to low enough angles for Scandi grinds, which are typically done at around 10 degrees per side.

MEC is one of my favourite stores tbqh. Their prices are typically very competitive. I am kinda a gear nut though, so I typically don't buy stuff like knives, multitools, and flashlights there (although MEC actually does carry some decent flashlights). I'm assuming your Canadian, so id recommend Amazon. Start with a Mora companion, use it, see what you like about it/dislike about it, and make your next purchase accordingly.

Unfortunately, I don't believe the WE can get to low enough angles for most Scandi ground knives (I.e. ~10 degrees per side( without buying the low angle adapter on top of the regular WE kit.

I would assume an Edge Pro Apex would be a more cost effective solution for this use case, since the standard EP can hit those angles.

I've never used the edge pro apex, but have some pretty extensive use on my Wicked Edge. I have never *so far* ran into a knife that I couldn't sparpen to my high standards. And the other anon is right about the edge angle. Idk if my w.e. would be able to sharpen a Mora to match the factory's edge, however if the blade was considerably larger, (I.e. the blade sits taller when mounted in the sharpener) I don't think it would be an issue. I chose to spend a little more on the w.e. because I wanted that dead accurate consistently, and I also wanted a dry sharpening system. The stones on the w.e. are diamond stones and will last you a lifetime (supposedly), where as the edge pro's system requires some maintenance to re-flatten the stones after they've gotten some use. Since I use my sharpener a lot, I like the benefits of the w.e. and the super quick re-sharpenings I can do once I have sharpener the knife once and have recorded the angles used.

I think it's a fair value. I'm from Canada btw, the prices weren't terrible when I bought, even with the exchange and tax. The handles are a little rough around the edges, Espicially for the price of the knife. The sheath is pretty terrible also, but you can get upgraded sheaths afterwards, or you can also make one is you were able to. The blade shape is my favorite, and I like the steel a lot. Overall it's a nice knife for the money. It's a little rough around the edges (quite literally), and the sheath sucks, but other than that, it's a great knife.

Nice pic.

Here's one of my new M4 PM2. Reprofiled the edge to ~8-10 degrees per side freehand. It's finished on 16 micron CBN on suede.

About the Guardian, honestly I would expect better than a crappy sheath and poorly rounded handle at that price.

Most of the handmade knives I've bought have not had any issues like that at all, but I also don't mind the kinds of steels most small makers use.

Got a Byrd Meadowlark in the mail today

Never had a Spyderco-style knife, and I wanted to try a cheaper version of such first

Seems solid enough

Lots of wasted metal due to the thumbhole, but it's not heavy anyway

Kinda prefer thumbstud openers and flippers, but I can see why people like these things
>>
>>828629
lmao

I was JUST thinking about suggesting it since I recently got a few of them too. I definitely like it better than the cara cara; the blade size is just right. It's much closer to the delica, just with a lesser steel (which is still perfectly fine).

The lockbacks are not as easy to take apart, but they do lock pretty solid. I kind of wish they had better scale options though.

If you want something you can flick open, the frame lock style ones can do that pretty easily. If you want one of those I'd suggest the persistence or tenacious.
>>
>>828641

It seems like a solid knife so far, and the price is good

The black handles (feels like polymer of some type) aren't bad

The belt clip seems like the worst part to me; it's quite obnoxious and sticks into your hand; it's small enough that you can just throw it in a pocket anyway, so I wouldn't use the clip when carrying it

It's razor sharp

The Hawkbill looks like a decent boating EDC knife; I use a serrated Mora for that at the moment, but something that can be thrown in a pocket looks quite handy

Yeah, the Cara Cara looks good; looks similar to the Delica in size, as you said

I think the scales are the same material as on the other models, but the texture is better. I think I bent the clip on the cara cara I used to use to make it a bit looser.

I meant the Meadowlark is about the same as the delica; the cara cara is essentially a larger version.

>why anyone would require titanium scales I will never know
Because they're significantly lighter than SS but don't damage like Al, most of my knives have metal handles and if I can afford the Ti option, I'll go for it, otherwise the Al version.

>the stainless steel version is only $23 but it cannot be taken apart
You can't take apart the $65 Centofante either, still an awesome knife, haven't needed to take mine apart yet.

not that anon but defo not what I'd consider an /out/ knife. I wouldn't carry because of that sheath alone - looks like it'll drop the blade if you even look at it funny let alone have it on your hip up down and over hills.

Looks more like a pairing knife, or a light edc knife.

Get it if you want but 200eu seems a bit excessive. You could buy 2 or 3 decent knives for that much.

you just sold a wicked edge my friend, thanks for taking the time to elaborate on it,

>>
>>828496

If you are buying a guided system it isn't really hard at all to learn how to sharpen with it.

Since you are in the GTA though, you should also consider taking the freehand sharpening class at the Japanese kitchen knife store in Toronto called Knife. They give a decent introduction to waterstone use freehand.

I bought a few waterstones from there, owner of the store is a good dude. He let me try a few of the store waterstones to see if I liked them before buying.
>>
>>828569

Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish on denim will give a mirror shine, but will polish the apex to the extent that there is little or no "tooth" or "bite" left in it, like a straight razor.

The only two ways to get a mirror polished edge bevel but still have an apex with some slicing aggression are to use waterstones to achieve the mirror (an ~8k-10k finish will still have *some* slicing aggression), or to mirror polish the edge bevel and then apply a microbevel at a higher angle using something like a Spyderco F ceramic or an Arkansas stone.
>>
>>828791

As the other anon said, it isn't difficult to learn proper sharpening technique on a guided system.

The main factor is time/knife. Since the w.e.'s stones are diamond, they will *never* wear out. So you don't necessarily have to worry about wear and tear on your system.

For shitty kitchen knives, the steel is extremely soft, and can be sharpened up nicely. I would charge $5 /kitchen knife, and if one was particularly large, I would increase the cost accordingly.

But for modern folding knives and fixed blades with some of the more advanced steels (S30v, s35v, s90v, s110v, m4, d2, 01 etc etc) it can take quite a while to sharpen out chips in the blade and such. So I would charge $10 ~ $40 a knife... Keep in mind though, some of the knives I sharpen cost >$2000. Always remember, it's easier to keep an existing client than find new ones, and the repeat sharpening are the best way to make money.
>>
>>828757
I'd advise against that. I've read some bad reviews. Consider getting a Spyderco with the H1 steel. The H1 steel is "completely rust proof". It's been my primary fishing/swimming knife for years and no rust I'm site for me. Also it sharpens really easily. It doesn't have the same edge retention as VG10, 154cm, or s30v, but is darn good enough when you consider how short of time it takes to bring the edge back to razor sharp.

If the knife you wanted has good steel and the shape seems more useful than a traditional bushcraft shape then go for it. Don't be stopped by someone saying it doesn't look that good. What can one tell from the look of something? That said, the tbs boar is a fantastic knife. Brilliant steel (O1's little brother with fewer 'ingredients' like vanadium and chromium added). Great heat treat, comfortable handle, perfect thickness, good length, the edge geometry is a perfect compromise of strength and cutting ability. One gripe is that the k720 will rust even more easily than o1 in my experience so if you keep an oil pen and a cloth in your kit just incase it gets wet you will be perfectly fine. >>

you can always put a micro-bevel on it to thicken the edge a touch. Any 0 degree scandi is pretty fragile and prone to rolling.
>>
>>829462
I'm not concerned about the edge being too thin, i'm concerned about the edge angle being too obtuse and that it wouldn't bite very deep
>>
>>829455

Why not the Mora Companion Heavy Duty? I have both myself, but wanted to get a stainless Companion because all of my other ones are carbon and they rust after a simple meal prep: s
>>
>>829551

Two reasons:

The HD will not be much thicker immediately behind the edge than the regular version, and this will be equally susceptible to any type of failure that starts at the edge and propagates upwards.

Secondly, because a 2mm stock Mora is already easily strong enough to survive anything short of batoning, so making the blade thicker is just throwing away cutting performance for no reason at all.

Go ahead and see how many people online have managed to break the blade of a 2mm stock Mora who weren't batoning.
>>
>>829562
It's usually the blade to handle junction that fail on Moras anyway. The 2mm versions are nice, not sure if I'd get on with a Scandi style grind on thicker stock.

Well, at if you don't need a Scandi grind specifically, at least the F1 or A1 has a much taller grind and shouldn't be quite as thick right behind the edge.

In a few days I'm going to camp for weeks in the alps with hundreds, maye thousands of hippies.
I don't know much about /out/ things, and I want to keep my expenses as low as possible. I bought a tarp, planned to get a sleeping bag somehow, and made myself a knife.
I took an old pair of pruning shears, sharpened and lengthened the blade, replaced the missing hinge with an old bolt and nut.
I thought it would be useful to be able to use it as a knife and as shears.

What do you think ?
Also, should I make myself a sheath and carry the knife part alone ?
>>
>>830233
oh yeah, made the handle too. Drilled a hole of the rough shape of the metal part, hammered the wood over it, and added a screw in the hollow of a S shaped curve on one side of the iron (like is kinda visible on the other part under the shoelace). Then shaped it.
I don´t think the screw touches the iron, so it is probably not useful to keep the blade and handle from moving, but it's hammered in tight.

>>

I've tried the F1 today because a friend has one, and i'm now wondering why anyone would want one, it lacks any distinct bite, handle is uncomfortable because the "diamond" shapes and it's sooo heavy for a 4" blade, i'll just get the Boar or some other decent priced "bushcraft" type knife, maybe i'll order a Pekka and just wait the 6 months

Ummm the first inch is only the part of the blade that can apply the most force and accuracy, but yeah you never need to cut that close. A few mm's of ricasso is good for sharpening, but anything over a quarter of a cm is too much
>>
>>830402

Just try to find a bushcrafting knife that isn't overly thick. 2mm at the spine is plenty for a Scandi ground knife.

Worst comes to worst, you could literally get a Mora, meme though it is.

Define hard use

The Salt Water series is good if you are talking about water

Delica and Endura are find for basic pocket knife stuff

I like the general looks of it, but don't like ricassos anywhere near the working edge. I like an edge that uses the full length of the knife and has a consistent grind all the way along the blade. If not for the ricasso, I'd very much want one of these.

>>
>>830959
I never said it's true, i personally don't care since i have no intention of getting an Enzo Trapper for unrelated reasons
>>
>>830959

Well, seeing as the Enzo Trapper has 3.5mm blade stock vs 2mm blade stock on a Mora Companion, I don't see why you would be surprised at its inferior cutting ability (I.e. "bite").

Thinner blades with similar height grinds will definitionally be thinner behind the edge and thus have higher cutting ability.
>>
>>831021
I do not disagree with that, as that is actual logic and not ''some guy said - ''

Are the bevel heights the same on both knives?

Are they both equally sharp?

fwiw I'm not a fan of Enzo knives
>>
>>830849

Works pretty darn well for everything I used it for. I reckon I must keep my edges a bit sharper than most because I've had that and a TBS Boar as mentioned above and also called out for having a shallow grind and not biting as well. Both seemed to function just as well as, if not better in carving than either of my thinner Moras.

My only criticism of the Enzo trapper was it having a fantastically sharp spine which can really do a number on your thumb in certain carving scenarios.

so can you give me an option that isn't garbage?
price is irrelevant

i've been thinking about the buck 119, is it a solid choice?
>>
>>831079
Well in that case i will most definitely get a Boar since it seems to fill out all the check marks i want it to, i might end up comparing it to my puukko
>>
>>831087
More info would be great, but go with something small, a sub 4.5" blade will do you good, Fällkniven F1 is supposedly a bad choice but the WM1 seems to be pretty good, Bark River are great all-round knives if you have $300 or more to spend, the 119 will do you good, there's thousands of designs out there, go to a store, handle some knives and look at the different materials and competitive options and then decide.

that's wrong. The chart should be a quadratic function, to show diminishing returns - ie a 200 dollar knife is only slightly better, than a $100 one (and i carry 200-250 dolaryddo blades on a daily basis, so i'm speaking from experience here).

Tru, point of inflection at (x=100) which is where the diminishing returns begin imo
>>
>>832307

why the point of inflection though? Just a simple quadratic function with price on the Y axis, and quality on the X axis.

The way you drew it, implies a big increase in quality for a small increase in price below $100, and it really doesn't work that way.
