Coat yourself in honey, you'll be too focused on running from bears to notice the insects.

DEET spray on self, squish everything else.

Also where can I buy the spray in your pic?

Does anyone have any recommendations for natural bug repellents (besides smoking)?

Supposedly DEET kills brain cells or something

You're not supposed to huff it

DEET has moderate toxicity. If you're paranoid i recommend just washing your clothes with it instead of spraying it on the clothes. It's also more durable and efficient.

You can also wash your clothes with permethrin. It's nearly as good as DEET and less toxic for the environment.

I use deep woods off

DEET can toxic yes, but as long as you are using it correctly, you will be fine. In terms of killing brain cells, that hasn't been documented. I use sportsman roll on stick repellent, which I like better than using sprays.

As for natural bug repellents, there isn't really going to be anything as effective as DEET as a repellent, or permethrin as an insecticide. I occasionally smoke while out, but the idea of that as a repellent is a total meme, since the amount of smoke you'd need to keep away bugs is kind of ridiculous. One of the problems with natural herbal repellents is also that they don't last very long unless you have a really good way to bind it to your skin. You can go the hippy route and mix a bunch of essential oils or whatever, but I have doubts that you'll be able to find much info on that other than anecdotal shit. Otherwise, you'll probably have to just constantly rub yourself with catnip or something.
