It's the ultimate /out/mobile though.
AWD
Lift kit.
Solar panels.

>2WD with locking diff can outperform an AWD

This is not true, especially now that they all have traction control.

Do you have any sketches ?

I spent 6k on an 05 chevy astro, got halfway through the build and blew the tranny, doing it yourself can drop the price to 8-9k
spent 2 years researching vans and stuff before i bought it. After working on it for a month and after totaling it im changing to a overland truck build, like out of a land cruiser. something to keep in mind, vans are a bitch to work on
>>
>>820428
>vans are a bitch to work on
This is why I want to buy a pretty new one.
Do not want to have to wrench on it

>Vans are a bitch to work on
True, but they offer the most space. You could go for the middle ground in a truck-based SUV like a Suburban, but then you lose a lot of vertical space.

Trucks are nice, especially since you can take the camper part out when you don't need it and drive it like a normal car, but the cab and living space aren't connected which kind of sucks.

I keep tossing this one around and always end up going with tent camping because it's the most versatile and I already have all the stuff.
>>
>>820853
>already have all the stuff
fucking thank you.
God i wish i could afford a fuckin bus or van or some shit ....
dammit!
>>
>>820863
I know how you feel man. I already have a truck and it's tempting to try and build my own camper, but those kind of projects have a tendency to always cost more than you thought, plus I have nowhere to store it.

It's hard to beat backpacking gear, even with a few luxuries thrown in. Weight and space is minimal, packing and unpacking is quick and easy as fuck, and you aren't tied to your vehicle since you can just throw your gear on your back and start walking.

The deals are out there. You can a conversion van for 6-800 bucks, my short bus was $500.
>>
>>820870
$500....
no fucking way.
Police auction?
>>
>>820870
>>820887

>Transmission exploding in 3... 2... 1...
>>
>>820887
Nope. Like i said, the deals are out there. I have spent a total of 1200 bucks on it and that includes wood and building shit. Most of what was wrong was electrical/small component stuff that took a lot of labor hours. I had to have 3 lights completely rebuilt because they rusted out for example. Dont listen to the people who say it is going to be a money pit. As long as you play your cards right you can have exactly what you want and not break the bank.
>>
>>820916
This is true, I have even seen 4x4 schoolies for pretty cheap since there is no market for a used one.
>>
>>820792
Soap and water
>>
>>818896
I was thinking about buying that exact shit! Colorado yeah? After a couple weeks of conversion van research, I've decided they're just too overpriced. I've chosen to forgo the 4wd for more room/amenities in a class b rv. I'm also going to live out that shit tho, so...
>>
>>818986

Why?
>>
>>821825
Can't stealth in that rig and there is very little space.
>>
>>818896
Just get a beater truck and buy/build a tiny house. Tow that shit around and boom, mobility and housing.
Or get an RV, that comes with lots of amenities you'd have to build in. It'll work if you can handle the social stigma of being technically homeless. Or is this just a side vehicle? It's different and we need to know if this is your future home.
>>
>>821874
That rig is 10x more stealthy than your fucked up hippy filth short bus.

I am a trucker so I am on the road for three weeks, then off for threel days.
This van will be for camping on those three days. Winter and summer.
>>
>>821874
Stealth is a myth. Get out there. The only time stealth would be necessary is if you break down and have to stay somewhere for a few days. You have to be fucking retarded to not be able to find a secluded spot for your vehicle. Even at a fuckin walmart people leave you alone.

>>821902
If you are a trucker then fuck it just buy the premade shit. You wont even feel it in the long run.
>>
>>821909
I used to be a cabinet maker.
Want to do all my own custom stuff inside .

Yes I think they are about five to ten grand high.
I am pretty much going to recreate though except for adding a high top.
>>
>>821911
Get something big. Fuck a regular size van.
>>
>>821940
>>821940
I am in a big ass truck all day long.
Also want to be able to stealth camp in urban places once in a while. Bigger vehicles draw too much attention.
I have done it a bunch in a minivan and no one even noticed me. Even near the beach in So Cal.
>>
>>821959
>draw too much attention
You are a trucker. Please do not confuse this. You will not draw unwanted attention.

>>
>>821994
I have done some time in a westy and in some parts of the country it's getting tough.
And I was in a totally refurbished 60k syncro
>>
>>818896
If you can afford it, then why not?

Personally, it seems like a waste. You can find land for $500/acre if you look hard enough. Hell, even if you paid $3k for one acre... you could build a premium shack, drive a well, buy solar panels & batteries and do a shit ton beyond that - for less money.

I say, go for it. If it's how you want to live, then make that shit happen.
>>
>>821914
I might go look at it and offer 22k cause that's about what it's worth.
>>
>>820428
>This is why I want to buy a pretty new one.
>Do not want to have to wrench on it

If you off-road you WILL have to fix shit.

Best source of useful ORV info in the universe is Pirate 4x4 forums. Some have vans but they are rare for good reason.>>820891

I'd prefer a short bus to a van. Always buy vehicles which are successes in commercial fleet use. Parts are cheaper, aftermarket support is top-tier, and maintenance sucks much less. You can easily upgrade trannies on such things if needed.

>>820870 is fine for his area. Dual rear wheels are a good thing for heavy loads.
>>
>>822851
Always lowball when buying. People HATE turning down money, especially since specialty vehicles aren't in much demand.
>>
>>823104
>If you off-road you WILL have to fix shit

4 wheeling is not my hobby. I will not do anything like rock crawling and i will only make slow advance when things get a bit tricky.
This is one reason I am going with AWD instead of 4x4. I do not want to beat up my vehicle
>>
>>820428

yeah ti is cheap in $, but not in labor.
only poor people think that they have a good deal when this situation happens to them.
>>
>>824098
like the normies who buy a cheap flat with lots of work to do and then claim ''yeah totally worth it, so cheap, plus you know all the weekends spend on doing fucking tedious work fixing my flat wow what a bargain, I regret nothing amirite''

please stop thinking like the middle class.
>>
>>824040
>Where are you looking?
You're srsly joking? Right?
If you can't find land for 500/acre you're doing it wrong. I live in one of the most populated areas of the world and I can still find land or < $700-1k/acre within 4 hours of me.

*protip
Look at larger parcels.
>>
>>824098
Nigger you what? Please, live innabus before you tell me what it's like okay?

This looks comfy in cool weather but I dread what it would be like in a hot summer area.

montana, idaho, wyoming, utah, colorado

anywhere that is neither prime farmland nor ranchland, nor close enough to civilization or any tourist attraction to really be worth anything.

Do you expect to make your next oil change without breaking down?
