I wanna get one but budget is tight. Thought about getting one of the $300 ones from Walmart but I figure they'll need a coat of marine sealant right away or something, and they probably still suck ass.

Stand up paddleboards are even worse. The cheaptes good quality one you can get is like $500. It's just a wide piece of fucking foam.
>>
I wish. Haven't been home for long enough to take it out in a couple years.

I bought one of those cheaper two man sit-on-tops for 600 euro. Fucking amazing piece of work for a rotomold

Get an inflatable stand up paddle board, I got this one and it costs 370 dollars (300 when I got it)
https://www.amazon.com/PathFinder-Inflatable-Stand-Paddleboard-Thick/dp/B01G7CSLSM/

It weights like 30 pounds for everything and can all fit into a backpack. It takes like 2-5 minutes to inflate and is very sturdy once you get used to it.

I love mine, I can take it pretty much anywhere, just carry it in my backpack and can take it to remote lakes if I want that normally couldn't be explored with a kayak because it would be near impossible to bring

Did I mention the whole thing fits into a backpack?
>>
>>818519

Not really. He jumped out once on our first trip but hasn't since.

>>821242
He actually behaves pretty well in the boat, just whines when people go by or he sees something he wants to sniff. I've only taken him in a canoe so I can pay attention to him a bit. After 2-3 hours he crawls under the seat and naps.

>>821279
Pine Islander here. We were lucky and got the first nice day after at least 5 days of early afternoon rain. We got an early start and were off the river by 1 pm, so that helps. There is little shade between Nocatee and Lettuce Lake, so it was close to being too hot by the time we finished.
>>
>>821451
Interesting about the canoe. He's been canoeing a few times and I don't remember him whining at all (same thing, will nap after a while). The kayaking thing is new since I just got this one for the explicit purpose of bringing him along. It's pretty big and open but it still might be too small a space for him.
>>
>>821451
>He jumped out once on our first trip but hasn't since.
Mine jumps in after buoys all the time. He thinks they're tennis balls.
>>
Thoughts on inflatable canoes? I don't have a car so inflatable is pretty much the only option
>>
>>817634
My gf got me into kayaking and it's comfy af.
>>
>>821645
I've used inflatable kayaks in whitewater, which was a ton of fun. For open, flat water I would not want one.

Also, to get a good quality inflatable, you'll probably spend more than a regular used canoe would cost. (I haven't looked in a couple years, so google prices it yourself).

I used to put my canoe on my Honda Accord with no problems. It barely fit on my gf's Toyota Corolla, but worked. It's probably more doable than you think. Look into roof racks if you have to.

Just my opinion

someone is selling a tarpon 100 with a paddle and cart for $400 locally. would it be a bad idea to pick it up if i'm 6'2? i was originally hoping to get something thats 12 to 14' long.
>>
>>822234
depends. Price is right.
You'll be able to check leg room when you buy it, at 6'2" I doubt that will be an issue.
Length = better speed and tracking as a general rule.
A shorter wide yak can be like paddling a bathtub.
I sell lives on water try it out. If seller doesn't live on water see if they will let you spend an hour with it.
If neither is an option what is your end goal? If it's long treks on large bodies of water/ocean my opinion is it's too short.
If you're paddling/fishing in ponds/rivers 10 isn't terrible and you can always sell it or 350-400 after you decide what you really want.
>>
>>822248
>If you're paddling/fishing in ponds/rivers 10 isn't terrible and you can always sell it or 350-400 after you decide what you really want.

that's pretty much it. i was just hoping for something longer because i watched videos of guys on shorter kayaks and they just walk all over the place. they seem to be fine for women since they don't paddle as hard.

Yes you can, I did a lot of fishing in a shitty inflatable rowboat when I was a kid.

I have one of these and it's pretty decent. Was out in it for a couple of hours this afternoon, forgot to put the memory card back in my camera though so you get an old picture:

noob here wanting to get into kayaking. problem is I don't really have anyone to go with me?

Is it too dangerous to go alone? I'll have a life jacket of course.
>>
>>827342
Depends. I always go alone. If you're a half decent swimmer, the water isn't too cold or rough, and you stay close to shore you should be OK.

You should tell someone where you're going and when you expect to be back, but that's a good idea whenever you go /out/.
>>
>>827342
As long as you're confident in your swimming, you aren't going down some crazy rapids, and you tell someone where you're going, you should be fine

inflatables suck for lakes in my experience (one single time a friend of mine went to a lake with one while i was there, it sucked)
the fact that the sit on top of the water rather than inside means its a ton of work to paddle anywhere. i'd imagine its less of a hassle for rivers

The difference is gonna be negligible and scratches are pretty much unavoidable. If the bottom of your kayak isn't scratched, you don't use it. Plastic kayaks are meant to be abused

I recommend you sand it down and fill with wax or another filler. repeat every time you use it.

My buddy and I are going to yak down Cedar creek tomorrow.

>Fresh Water
>~6 hours
>Plenty of sand banks for breaks

Going to start at around 7am or 8am and we should be done between 1pm and 3pm. Usually we just go out on the bay for an hour or two. The most we've ever done at one time is 3 hours (when we found the bridge) but I'm confident we can do it.

Any advice on gear to bring?

We have so far:

>Yellow Dry Bag
-FAK (non-stick gauze, medical tape, antibiotic ointment, bandages, baking powder, 2oz 70% isopropyl alcohol
-Utility Kit (whistle, Leatherman Squirt PS4, poo-bags, hand sanitizer)
-Anchor Kit (grappling hook and paracord)
-cell-phone telephone
-doggo harness
-doggo flea collar

>Blue Dry Bag
-towel
-3x ratchet straps
-extra shirt
-40% deet bug spray
-sun screen

>Cooler
-lunch (sammich for me, container of food for Jake)
-cereal bowl
-6x bottles of water
-bag of ice

>On us
-doggo life jacket
-paddles, obviously
-kayak caddie
-more poo-bags
-waterproof watch
-UV-5R
-kick ass aviator sunglasses

Am I forgetting anything?

We're not big sea-food eaters, and the creek runs through several state parks - so there's either no fishing allowed or fishing by permit only, and we don't have our fishing permits.

Great idea for future trips, though!

A smaller boat isn't going to be cheaper necessarily. Boats are different for everyone too, you need to go somewhere and sit in a few to see what is comfortable for you. You still have to get a paddle, pfd, and skirt as well. There are various Facebook groups and websites where people used boats for good prices. If there are outfitters near you they might have events where people sell their used stuff , or even the outfitters themselves might sell old demo or rental equipment. Look around.

The trip today was great! It was 6 hours on the nose and Jake stood at the front awe-struck all day! If he could talk I imagine he would say "WOW we found boat water in the woods!!!"

I took loads of pictures but my phone only saved 3 of them, not sure why ._.

Still a great day! Lots of people and some other doggos but plenty of creek for everyone. My paddle snapped toward the beginning of the trip but I was able to call home and have someone drive me out another set of oars - fucking clutch as hell and now I will always bring a spare set.

We had to climb up a dam output on foot to get our replacement oars that was some 20-30ft above shallow water - scary shit but we managed it!

All in all - not a good day but a GREAT day! Jake's got an extra spring in his step and you can tell he so far above the normal distractions of the doggo life. We're gonna try again next week!

I know I'm a few days behind but I noticed the guy didn't bother replying... In general he's correct but let's use that as more of a guide. First thing with playboats is they are inherently unstable. This is what allows them to be used to perform loops and cartwheels. The less stable the boat the harder it is to control on whitewater. But it mainly comes down to ability. I can quite happily paddle class 3-4 in a playboat and many other people do too. As a beginner the best way to look at it is by looking at the learning curve. Mastering the basics in a playboat will take ALOT longer however you will learn alot more. A forgiving river boat will give you the illusion of ability and skill however you will have learnt little. Think about your short and long term goals. For that price however it is worth it. Even if you hate the boat you will be able to sell it on and not loose any money on it. For more help join a local club. I've only skimmed the surface with design there is alot more to talk about

Hey /out/

I just got a kayak this weekend and wanna go sometime this week.

I have only one friend who has a kayak that would go with me, but our schedules conflict this week.

I'm really wanting to go solo but he advised against it. He thinks going alone is risky even having a life jacket.

His reasoning was what if you flipped kayak and hit your head; a life jacket wouldnt help. His other reasoning was if a snake got to you in the kayak and you got bit etc.

is he over exaggerating? Is it really that risky?

That's avery broad question. Yo answer it you need to ask yourself a series of questions.
- am I competent to prevent a capsize
- am I competent to right and recover a capsized boat?
- is the venue shelter or exposed?
- what risks does the venue present?
- if i where to campsite and be unable to rescue myself what are the consequences?

I spend alot of the time paddling solo including white water. However as a coach and role model I teach that paddling solo has increased risk. This dosnt mean it should be avoided, just that the risks should be understood and mitigated. If it is not possible to mitigate the risks, don't go alone. If having a partner does not mitigate the risk, don't bother going out.

Most importantly, go out and have fun!
>>
>>852495
>am I competent to prevent a capsize
I think so. I've only been out once but kayaks are pretty hard to capsize.

>am I competent to right and recover a capsized boat?
I would hope so, but pulling it to a river bank shouldn't be too hard
>is the venue shelter or exposed?
I'm not sure what you mean by this?
>what risks does the venue present?

>if i where to campsite and be unable to rescue myself what are the consequences?

I drown
>>
>>852496
>I'm not sure what you mean by this?
I think he means where are you paddling and what are the dangers. Kayaking in a stable fishing kayak on a pond or a slow lazy river is fairly safe even for a beginner. The open ocean in a relatively narrow and tippy sea kayak, or a fast river with rapids, are more risky. I kayak alone on Lake Ontario all the time but there are usually other people on the water and I stay fairly close to shore, so I don't think it's too dangerous if I don't go out in bad weather. Especially if I go out in the harbour not the open lake.

It's always a good idea to tell someone where you're going and when you expect to be back, just in case.
>>
>>852508
It's on a river. Not a huge one or fast moving one. It's not as calm as a pond or lake, but it's definitely not rapids.

I plan on paddling up and floating down and fishing back to a boat dock. That's about the extent of what I'll be doing.

I go alone all the time. something could happen but if youre prepared and have the essential items to save, repair and signal you should be fine.
there are checklists for this for a reason. you accommodate for the items specific for your paddle. A good life vest should keep you buoyant enough even when knocked out to be rescued, just be sure you wear one.
>>
>>852513
Sounds OK to me. If you paddle up then you won't come across any surprise dangers (like weirs, snags or fence wire across the river) on the way back down.

I don't mean to be a dick, but this is the least appropriate price of kit for the job. This is a life preserver, it's main job is to roll an unconscious casualty on to there back to prevent drowning. They are a bitch to swim in. A bauyancy aid would be more appropriate for your needs. Designed to make swimming easier, but will not roll you onto your back
>>
>>855129
Well as I said earlier im not the best swimmer so I think a little bit more protection would be beneficial.

>>
>>853951
Yeah bro if you are bad at swimming I would definitely recommend something like this. If you got a buoyancy-aid like someone else said you would still need to swim to keep yourself floating in a safe position. With something like this it does all the work on its own. Does look kinda babyish though, but the benefits outweigh the cons.

This is passive and would lead to an incident in nobody was to recover him. You do not need to swim to stay afloat in a bauyancy aid. It will just not roll you onto your back. This makes it considerably EASIER to swim in. Do a little bit of research before blindly recommending a peice of equipment that has the potential to compound an incident.

Too late now I already bought it. Looking at most buoyancy aids. They dont seem to have the safety features that I wanted such as the collar and crotch strap.
As a beginning kayaker I think I need all the help I can get especially since i'm not very good at swimming. And how would my life jacket "compound" an incident if anything it would prevent one.

Both missing the point.

Sit on top kayaks and sit in kayaks both have their uses.

Sit in's are good for recreational paddling and camping with because they are lighter and tend to (not always) have more water tight storage. You can easily portage a sit in while a sit on top is much more difficult to carry by one's self (generally). Sit in kayaks are also better for open sea kayaking because they sit lower in the water and are more manuverable.

Sit on tops are great for fishing and hunting from. They are more stable (you can stand on many of them) which means they can be used for things like duck hunting. I know a guy that fires his shotgun while standing on his while duck hunting. They tend to have more flat surfaces to mount gadgets on like rod holders, small trolling motors, and fish finders. They also sit higher in the water which makes them more ideal for fishing and they are more open which is better for casting a such. I've also heard of people capitalizing on their stability and putting a small downriggers on their sit on top and trolling with it. This would not be possible or at least a lot less stable on a sit in.

One is not better than the other. It depends on what you want to do with it.

Tldr: sit in's are more versatile but sit on tops excel at what they are ment for.

Can confirm this. I work at a field and stream selling 'yaks and 'noes.

Not shilling here but the Field and stream brand yaks are indeed good quality due to who manufactures them. Can't beat old town.

The sales aren't unique to field and stream. Keep an eye on your local sporting goods store. They'll have a kayaks blow out at least once a year where you can get a couple hundred dollars off kayaks. Don't buy a full price kayak.

>open sea kayaks
>more manuverable.
No they aren't, at least not without bracing and edging. Sea kayaks are long and narrow so they go fast and track straight.

They're also more tippy on flat water but that makes them easier to keep upright in waves, when a wide flat bottom boat will follow the surface of the water and rock more and maybe tip. That's what I was sarcastically gettng at here. >>857584

How, Hobie is one of the best kayak brands. That thing is built like an aircraft carrier, I can literally jump off the bow and it wont go anywhere close to tipping. Ive had it for 8 years and all it really needs is the hull waxed every season.

>>
>>857964
I have my own but yeah I started with a 2 person. Ive had that one for a very long time. Started kayaking before it went mainstream.

>>857963
i never said starting in the shallow end is a bad thing. You were just bragging how you dont wear a life jacket but you paddle in shallow areas and I just found it ironic.
>>
>>857936
is that the odyssey? how well does it work when you put the seat in the middle position for solo use?
>>
>>857970
Yes it is. Dont use it as a single person often cause its a bitch to set up and when you do its harder to turn than just having some sitting in the back steering. Also it practically requires 2 paddlers cause its just so big.
>>
>>857974
the only decent local kayak for sale is an odyssey for $700, but if it sucks for solo use then i won't bother. i figured it does since all the pics of it are in tandem use.
>>
>>857975
I do really enjoy it though. Can jump off it, swim around, climb back in without it ever tipping. Its great if go camping as you can strap all that shit directly on the kayak and set off.
>>
>>857977
i have no one to paddle with though, so i would need a kayak that performs well solo.
>>
>>857568
I fish from real boats, not sit-on-top toys.
>>

Maybe for NEETs and poorfags, but as kayaks go it's still entry level.

Or maybe when theres other options for getting a super basic entry level kayak for 300. I make 630 a week and I consider that being a poorfag and more people make less than I do so its understandable to buy a sub 300 kayak if you want to get into it.

maybe in your trailer park.

i never understood the idea of cheaping out when you want to start in a new hobby. i understand being hesitant to drop serious coin on something you might not even enjoy, but before you buy you can almost always try things out. not to mention that you're better off putting that $300 towards a used higher tier kayak than a walmart piece of shit.

>>

nope sorry i completely agree with him. A nice kayak is far better in the water than one from walmart. They cut through the water much more efficiently and offer much more things resulting in more fun that you struggling to paddle your shitty ass walmart kayak.

I don't think you get what I'm trying to say. I'm an unemployedfag lucky enough to have parents who got me a $500 kayak for my birthday a couple of years back, but I know it's still a cheap shitboat as far as kayaks go, so I don't judge people with $250 kayaks, and neither should the rest of /out/ who mostly seem to be on the same sort of budget. . Anything that floats and gets you out on the water is infinitely better than no boat at all.
>>
>>859440
yes but theres a difference in quality when it comes to kayaks. These cheap ones do not cut through the water as well as the more expensive ones. So you may think you are having fun but in reality we are having more fun as we dont have to struggle to paddle through water when ours just slice through it.
>>
