#65-"Hot as Hell" Edition

Previous Thread:

>tfw made it to the weekend
I was pretty sure I would die of heat stroke before getting here. Taking Monday off so I have a 3-day weekend, but I'm going to have to get some 6am sessions in with this heat. At least it's starting to get dark earlier so I don't have to wait around quite as long for the largemouth to start biting.

Talk about fishin
>>
Hitting the beach Sunday to try for a legal halibut again. Caught my first one last weekend but it was only 14.5"

Going to Dick's tomorrow to look at some bass meme lures because fags online claim they work for halibut.

Also wtf is that fish? I'm gonna call it a tooth-nosed jewfish until someone corrects me
>>

I think you got it, tooth nosed jewfish but I normally just call em Jeweys for short

Anyone have a pasta or link to an article that explains rod action and size?

I've been using some old Zebco catfish rod spooled with 10lb mono forever, just now realized I've been doin' it wrong.
>>
>>810706
What are you fishing for, what reel and size, line weight, and price range? Maybe we could reccommend stuff.

It would be hard to generalize it because I have 3 different rods that are all 1pc 6'6" Medium Weight Fast Action and they all feel a bit different.

You really want to try a few rods in store before buyin.
>>
>>810706
I wouldn't say you've been doing it wrong, just been doing it in a way that isn't conductive to more fun. Exact reason why I bought another rod and reel. My 6000 and medium heavy are great for big fish (cat, etc) but boring as hell for bass.

I'm off to sweden for some canoeing for a week, leaving tonight.

Taking a rod/reel with a small selection of spoons spinners other random lure things. I've not caught a fish since I was 8 years old. Caught fuck all last time I was there. Wish me luck based fishing anons.
>>
>>810709
Fishing for black bass and panfish mostly, occasionally brookies or rainbows, honestly whatever the hell I can catch. As for line weight, IDK, whatever would be the most versatile, I guess 8-10lb mono. As for reels, I have some shitty Shakespeare spincaster on right now, but anything I'd buy would mostly likely be a spinning reel.

>>810710
Fun for me is catching fish, and I don't really catch dick right now. I think two of my biggest problems are lack of sensitivity and casting distance, and understanding rods a little better would help with that.
>>
>>810739
The spincaster is really messing with your distance. A good spinning reel will help immensely. Medium action would be the most I'd get.

The biggest meme lure for legal halibut from the surf is the lucky craft flashminnow. You won't find it at Dick's but they will be at any tackle shop near you. Prepare to spend $20 for a lure.

If you don't want to spend that much then any minnow shape soft plastic or minnow shape crankbait/jerkbait that has max dive up to 3 to 5 ft will work. Halibut seems to like a really skinny long minnow profile
>>
>>810736
Is it legal to fish there? Be sure to clear it with the local Sharia council.
>>
>>810747
I tried some $18 lure that the local bait shop recommended and didn't get a hit.

I've only had luck with a simple spoon so far.
>>
>>810734
Saved me some work

>>810739
You should look into something lighter for what you are doing. Like a 2000 size reel with 6lb mono or 10lb braid if you want to go that route. Stick it on a 6' or 6'6" medium or medium-light possibly. Even 7' if you want. That will be a blast as long as you aren't constantly rip 5lb largemouth bass from weeds.

Keep that big catfish rod and get a cheap 4000 size reel with 12lb mono and use that for catfishing or anything heavy.

That's how I would do it.
>>
>>810769
yes the mosque sells licenses.
>>
>>810747
That is probably a lucky craft. That would be the first on anyone recommendation list, especially a tackle shop, for catching halibut from surf in socal. It usually does catch fish, make sure you don't retrieve it too fast, just enough to barely feel the vibration and tension from the lure.

I call it a meme lure because while it is a really easy to use and will catch fish in 70%-80% of the condition in the surf, it's not the end of all lure. It is definitely a high quality lure and cast really far for a minnow shape hard lure. However, it is still a crankbait so it has a very specific dive depth (up to 3 ft) and only work well within a specific range of retrieve speed. There are times when the area is too deep and halibut are not active enough to move from the bottom to take the lure. Lucky craft also suffer when there are too much weed floating since it will snag everything as a shallow diving crank with 3 hooks or the surf is too rough
>>

I got a couple Lucky Crafts from MTB. They seem nice and all, but I know those things go for $15-$20 each. Not sure I would spend that money unless I really liked the color combo or had incredible luck with them somehow. I will spend $10-$12 on an X-Rap though...

I have an x rap too but it is the 10xr one and dives pretty deep so I don't use it that much. However, there will be times when I need it though. It doesn't cast as good as the lucky craft flash minnow even when it is 3/4 and the lucky craft is 5/8.

I do have pretty good luck with the shadow rap too, which is pretty similiar to the x rap. It doesn't cast well neither but sometimes the fishes are just right near the shore so I don't need to.

I grabbed one of those Shadow Raps but haven't used it much. I like the regular suspending X-Raps. It is like a better Husky Jerk.

They make a handful of saltwater specific X-Raps that Yuro loves. One of them is the XXX-Rap, I think that one is made to cast really far and uses single hooks instead of trebles. The regular X-Raps are fairly light for the size.

Went to that lake with the monster bass and I think it has just been too warm for largemouth. Plus at that lake I have to park at this rec center and walk a little bit and the parking lot closes at 8pm so I can't even park anywhere close and stay for sunset. I probably should've stayed another 45min and ran back to my car at 7:55pm but as always the wind is comin from the east, sun is setting in the west, and it is hot as hell so it isn't the most pleasant condition for fishing. Especially after working 10hrs+ in this heat with a truck that has no AC.

I think I'm gonna drive up to Gander Mtn and browse. I haven't been there in months.

You really like that Whopper Plopper? I'm sure mine is still tangled in that grass at a lake down the street. I didn't love it enough to get it back or spend $18 on a new one.

I have an old Bass Pro store brand Rapala Original knockoff that I have caught so many fish on. I used to run it a lot in unfamiliar spots where I didn't want to lose a $9 Rapala but damn that thing worked well.

I think it's in this "Cheap vs Expensive" pic. The middle gold ones on the bottom, bottom is an Original Rapala and top is the Bass Pro.

Typical weedless rig with an offset worm hook? Or some wacky rigged deal?

I think I want to grab some of those goofy weights to do wacky rigs. I hear lots of good things but have never tried it. I'm gonna put it on my list for a Bass Pro or Gander Mtn adventure.

Somebody enlighten me on the wacky rigs.

What hooks (type and size) do you use? Do you also use the funky weights? Does it need to be a fat Senko worm or could I run it on a Zoom Trick or Finesse worm?

And how do you fish them? What conditions do they work best in?

I get a lot of hits from big bass on soft plastics just after I cast them and they are falling to the bottom. I'd be down to try out the wacky rigs. Get some of those bright orange and pink Yum senkos and see if the peacocks would hit them. That's my project for tomorrow. Bass Pro really should open at 4:30am so I could stop there before I go fishing.

>>810923
Yeah, it's definitely something else compared to any of the typical prop lures. I wonder if the peacocks would like it. I should really go try and recover it one day.
>>
>>810931
I haven't tried it yet but all the youtube/online research I've done say it's the way to go if you wanna make plastic worms last longer
>>
>>810929
Nah, what's the deal with that?

>>810927
Just buy some Yum worms. I still don't know how Yamamotos are $8 for a few sticks of rubber.

>>810926
>no soft baits
I used to be like that too when I lived in IL and bass would hit spinners and cranks in July. Doesn't work like that here. Lizards and brush hogs have saved me from a really boring summer.

>>810931
Looking at the pics, I didn't know they were O-Rings. I thought they were some flexible lead weights or something. Makes sense. So wacky rigs are normally weightless?
>>
>>810932
>And how do you fish them? What conditions do they work best in?
they work anytime a texas rigged worm works which is always. and you can fish it the same way with the slight raise, let it sink back down, reel in slack, repeat

you know how stabbing an earth worm makes it go fucking nuts and writhe around? that's the action of a wacky worm at all times in the water. looks like it's injured and easy prey
>>
>>810936
I see. I'm anxious to try it out because picky fish really seem to like the finesse presentations. I can run a lizard on a 3/8oz bullet weight that pulls to the bottom pretty quick and they won't bite it. If I switch to a 1/8oz weight, it falls a little slower and they love it.
>>
>>810935
you don't *have* to use o rings for wacky rig, you can just stab it, but o rings make the bait last 10x longer. and yeah normally weightless AFAIK
>>
>>810935
I don't use soft baits because I'm not a litter bug.
>>
>>810935
>Just buy some Yum worms
The thicker ones right? I have some thin ones from Walmart and they suck for T-rigging
I've been wanting to get some zoom trick worms, you have any experience with those?
>>
>>810932
just tie on a octopus hook (what ever size you find acceptable) but be sure to leave a good 2 feet of line below the knot if you plan on not fishing weightless so you can add a sinker. tie on a drop shot sinker and hook your senko and your set. if you want to use an o-ring just put one on. as for condition and how to fish you just want to look for high visibility water and then cast out and let it sink all the way, once you know its on bottom just do gradual 1-2 foot lifts slowly pulling or popping it closer to the shore. as Im sure you know they eat it on the way down so when you lift up and lower back down make sure you real in the slack so you can set the hook.

>>810936
>they work anytime a texas rigged worm works which is always
You know what's fucked up? One of my nearby lakes will have smaller largemouth (12"-14") cruising close to shore during the day and it is really hard getting their attention. Right at sunset, the bait fish start to go crazy towards the top of the water with the largemouth chasing them. If I throw a crank or fluke out by the baitfish to try and entice them with a larger meal, they rarely hit it. If I throw a Texas rigged lizard or worm right where the commotion is, the bass will always go for that instead of the baitfish.

I guess when they're chasing the baitfish, they must be in hunting mode. And if a slower, easier target appears a few feet below, they will grab it.
>>
>>810945
Yeah it's crazy how attractive the plastics are to them. I had about 3 feet visibility today so I was dropping and watching my senko, and it was amazoing how real it looked. Everytime you twitch it goes a different direction real fluidly and looks so damn real
>>

2MB, 3264x2448px
>>810942
If you throw them in the water, they break down pretty fast. Way quicker than that crankbait you snagged on a rock last summer.

And like 90% of the time, the worm or lizard stays on the hook but is too beat up to use again. So I just rip it off, throw it in my tackle bag, and toss it in the trash later. Or I throw them in some bushes.

>>810943
The Yum worms (I think they're called 'Dingers') are like the Yamamoto Senkos. They aren't super long, but they are fat and I think the body is almost symmetrical. Those are the ones you always see on Wacky rigs.

Zoom Trick Worms are different, they are long and thinner than the Dingers and Senkos. They have a little more presence for larger bass and the tail will stick up from the bottom and wiggle around a bit. I like Zoom Finesse Worms though, and some of the other thin ones. The smaller bass close to shore will eat those things up. Put them on a 2/0 EWG and catch one every other cast.

yeah drop shot weights, you just pinch the line up inside and it holds - no need for a knot
>>
>>810953
Intredasting. I was lookin and seems like some people use regular bell sinkers while others use these real long cylindrical ones.

My shoppig list is getting long. I need to stop getting new ideas. I need to grab some octopus hooks though. Most of my regular hooks (non-offset) are like panfish sized. I noticed that a few weeks ago when I got medium shiners and ended up using offset worm hooks because it was the best size I had for larger bass.
>>
>>810955
>I was lookin and seems like some people use regular bell sinkers while others use these real long cylindrical ones.

yeah I don't really know the conditions but it's like a long cylinder works best when there's a lot of rocks because it bounces off better, or something.

Is there any functional difference between a three-way rig and a dropshot rig?

Just by looking at the picture, it appears the three-way would achieve the same goal of suspending bait off the bottom, but without having to tie a super pain in the ass knot.

I've never once lost a lure. I always get it unsnagged.

You can dredge up plastic worms all day long in the water ways around here. They don't degrade unless they are specifically biodegradable and state so on the label.

I actually dredge up stuff all the time just to collect old lures. I also don't like spending money on something that doesn't last.
>>
>>810959
With a 3-way like that, it looks like you would need current like a river to keep the bait off the bottom. The drop-shot seems like it would be better for a slow, stop and go retrieve in a lake from shore. Also wouldn't get tangled as easily.
>>
>>810961
>You can dredge up plastic worms all day long in the water ways around here. They don't degrade unless they are specifically biodegradable and state so on the label.
agreed, throwing plastics in the water is a big no-no, as a bass could get it, but they can't digest it and will get fucked up

Took my girlfriend fishing with me today. It was eventful. This was probably the fifth or sixth time that I brought her. I was fly fishing for bass in a little area that went into a riffle to a pool to another rifle then a deep pool. I set her up to fish with carp with corn in the deep pool and I was going to fly fish the other ones. Anyways as soon as I get her set up I walk away probably 20 feet and then she starts screaming my name. I turn around and see my rod she was using fly into the water and into the abyss as I ran up..... good thing I only gave her the ugly stik and not one of my st croixs...

I did at least catch a few smallmouth.

There's no creel or possession limits for bluegill where I live. Only managed game fish have those.

I really don't get it though. When you go fishing, you catch fish, it is impossible not to catch fish unless everything is flooding and you're on a river/stream and everything looks like chocolate milk (just switch to live bait and a cane pole in that case). It literally has nothing at all to do with skill. Just cast, crank, catch fish, and repeat. Hence, the need for creel limits and possession limits.

If you can't catch fish, there must be some outrageous problem going on.

Just go with a weedless Texas rig. They normally don't get caught up on that and will still run on the bottom like your jigs. Also the shakey head rigs if you want. Pic related is the shakey head type.

>>811247
How big are the pikes and drum? Bullhead and pickerel would be fine on a M, but you may want a MH if you are catching larger drum and (northern) pike a lot.

You can always do Ugly Stiks, they are $40 US but I'm not a huge fan of them with lures because they aren't very sensitive or fast. Berkley Lightning Rods are my favorite cheaper rods at $40 US and they carry them at tons of places. Fenwick Eagle and Shimano Sellus rods are both decent too for around $60 US.

If you go to Bass Pro, Cabela's, or Gander Mtn, they will have their store brand rods and you can often get a lot for your money if you go that route. They are manufactured by larger companies anyway so they will be just like a name brand rod with a cheaper price tag. Dick's (if you have those in Canada) has the Field & Stream rods which is their store brand and I have heard good things about those.

Just ignore the obvious troll
Fishing is conditions, luck, skill, and knowledge

If the conditions are bad, you won't catch as many fish
If you aren't lucky, you won't get fish, I've seen it happen
If you aren't skillfully in hooksets or how you work the bait , you won't catch as much fish,
If you aren't knowledgeable on what the fish eat, how to mimic it or where the fish are holding , you won't catch as much fish

There's no arguing it

no my point wasnt specifically about me it was just a general statement about a situation that highlights how someone could most definantly out fish someone else thus proving that a skill gap exists

Just sitting around waiting for the late afternoon so I can go fishin. Finally getting around to putting a little more line on two of my reels. The one spinning reel lost a bunch of line like 2 months ago when that monster snek ran me out and wrapped it around something underwater and it has been casting like shit. The baitcaster, I caught a bad snag and it somehow broke off like 20yds of line instead of just snapping at the leader. That one still casts fine with a little less line but it has been bugging me.

Since they both have braid, I'm just pulling the braid off and tying on a slightly longer mono backing so I don't have a knot 20yds into the line that I have to cast through. Works well using an old reel to take the braid off quickly.

>>811288
Practice...

>>811271

Thanks dude. I will look into those you have mentioned. Pikes and drums ive seen around here fishing with relatives have never been too massive, but I know big ones exist. Mostly just delicious walleye/pickerels though.

I'm so sick and tiered of these junk ass bait casters. Paid $80 for this reel and it's been shit almost every time I've used it. It doesn't usually fuck up when there is braid on it but as soon as I put mono or fluoro the line somehow manages to wrap itself inside the spool making it so my spool can't turn any more and I have to take off the side plate and remove the spool and untangle it every time. This happened about 3 times yesterday and I've had it. I'll just use it as a junk pond fishing reel I guess, they still sell it at gander you think I could somehow return it?

>>
>>811300
You know you still need to stop the spool with your thumb when the lure lands in the water, right?

And if you are using braid, just make sure it isn't digging into itself. Could happen with mono too I guess. If you hit a snag, big fish, or just pull on the line hard against the drag, the line will bury itself down in the spool and kinda get caught up when you cast. That can fuck you up and cause nests. Just make sure the line is coming off smooth and not hanging up anywhere.

>>811301
Goddamn. I wonder if it's from the memory and stiffness of the heavier mono/braid. Once the line is on the spool, you could do the hot water trick so the line kinda shapes to the spool. It sounds like a problem with the line, not the reel.

Aside from that, how is the Gander Mtn reel?

>>811304
Sounds good. I would probably do the 3000 though, just because 8lb is getting close to the high end on a 2000. And you could still run 10lb-12lb on the 3000 if you really wanted to.
>>

I know, it will work. I like that size reel too but for 10lb braid or 6lb mono. Maybe 15lb braid but 10lb felt better. 3000 would be better for line capacity with the 8lb as well if it matters.

>>811331
I was thinking this same thing.

>>811330
I get that all the time because Florida afternoon thunderstorms, but I just wait them out for 20min or drive 10 minutes and it is sunny.

Two reels are all spooled up nice and full now, about time to get out of the house. I think I'm gonna stop at Bass Pro and grab some of that dropshot stuff and go to my peacock lake that always frustrates me.
>>
>>811343
If using lures, I'm a fan of spinners at night. Otherwise live bait works about the same. If anything you could go for catfish.

And river fishing, we always used the 3-way river rigs with minnows. Otherwise with lures, it is all about finding the right spots. Predator fish like to sit in slower or still water, right on the edge of faster moving water. You also always want to cast upstream and retrieve downstream since predator fish like to face upstream waiting for an easy meal to float down the river towards them.
>>
>>811348
So lures work fine, cast upstream and reel it back in right? Seems like it'd be moving pretty damn fast, at least in the nearby river.

Is the 3-way river rig any different from a normal 3-way rig? I don't plan on using live bait, I'm not confident in my ability to catch shit all with a fish already on the damn hook.

Oh, you want a rod and reel?

Here's the copypasta for that. It will be in US$$ so probably add like $10 to the prices. If you have a Cabela's nearby, they will probably have a handful of them. Cabela's will also have their store brand rod and reel combos and they will probably have a couple in your budget.

For your fishing, look for something around the 30 or 3000 size (it will say it somewhere on the reel). The reel will also have line reccommendations and a 3000 will be somewhere around "Mono- 6lb-180yds, 8lb-150yds, 10lb-130yds" and then get a spool of monofilament line like Trilene to spool it up. 8lb is probably the way to go and will be versatile. Cabela's will spool line for you too if you don't want to deal with it.

And it should be matched up with a rod. A 30 or 3000 sized reel will probably be on a 6'6" medium weight rod.

>Rod/Reel Combos Under $100
Top to bottom, left to right.
1) Abu Garcia Ike 2- $39
2) Quantum Bill Dance- $39
3) Shakespeare Ugly Stik GX2- $49
4) Pflueger Trion- $59
5) Bass Pro Tourney Pro- $59
6) Lew's Laser Speed Spool- $59
7) Abu Garcia Cardinal SX- $69
8) Daiwa Revros- $69
9) Mitchell 300- $69
10) Pflueger President- $79
11) Shimano Sedona/Sellus- $89
12) Mitchell 300 Pro- $89
13) Abu Garcia Orra S- $99

On this list in your budget, I would say go for the Abu Garcia Cardinal SX, Pflueger Trion, or any of the Cabela's or Lew's ones you see at the store that you like. The Pflueger President combo is a great choice too but you may have to exceed your budget by $10-$20.

Can't go wrong with a Daiwa combo like Hatchery Anon said.

But I think buying a rod and reel combo will be better for you. You normally save around $20 at that price range, maybe more, compared to buying the rod and reel separately. Plus they will already be matched up with the correct sizes.
>>
>>811380
see i would almost alwasy tell folks to spend a bit more and get what they like, if it means spending a lil more and buyguying sepperatley

>>
>>811385
Yeah if you have to get that 7' rod on the 2000 size reel, then you won't find that in a combo. But the difference between the quality of the combo for $70 and a separate rod and reel for $70 is normally going to be sizeable.

I don't think anon is going to be that picky. If there was an $80 reel on clearance for $40 in the right size and anon could grab that and a Lightning Rod, it might be nicer than most $80 combos.

What is bold about catching fish? Also, why is everyone talking about bluegill? I never said anything about bluegill at all. I talked about creel limit and possession limits. Where I live, bluegill don't have either so they don't apply to what I'm talking about. Why on earth I would need to spell that out is a real wonder.

Not only that, but we are talking about lures, not live bait. Specifically those in >>810926 and I only mentioned live bait once in >>811235 if it was flooding and there's 0 visibility. Then again this whole discussion makes 0 sense to me.

We usually get some forked sticks, a soda can, cast, place the bent soda can under the line at the reel, and wait. If there's no soda can trash laying around I use a round bobber, on the line between eyelets, that is set to be loose and slide as the line Is taken out when a fish has it. Hearing a can fall or watching the bobber dance can be magical because you know there's a huge flathead swallowing the big goldfish..

For bass fishing we just underhand cast to make sure we don't hit limbs we can't see. Dark colored, noisy, slow, topwater baits are what I use for that.

Today's Bass Pro adventure...

I bought that little tool for rigging the silicone bands because I'm a pussy. Anybody use one of those?

They fuck with you on terminal tackle though. $10 for a pack of 3/4oz bullet weights as seen above. Plus I was looking for the hooks for the wacky rigs, and they have the Bass Pro brand which were priced ok at $5 or $6 for a 25pk, but the largest size they had was 2/0 which would be a bit small for bass. Then right next to it, they have the Gamakatsus which are $4 for a 5pk but they had them in 3/0+. So I went to the saltwater section and just grabbed Mustad octopus hooks, $3 for an 8pk.

The drop shot weights were overpriced too, like $6 a pack. So I grabbed a pack of the 1/8oz ones, but then had to go to the saltwater section again for the bell weights.

They carry the Gremlin weights which are normally cheap and work fine, but they only have Gremlin split shots. Nothing else that you would want to use. I just need to find a Walmart with 3/4oz Gremlin bullet weights for 98¢ a pack instead of $10 at Bass Pro. If they were even a little above reasonably priced, I would just buy them while I'm at Bass Pro. But not $10 for some lead weights.

End rant.
>>
>>811288
If you are aiming at the water and hitting the trees try aiming for the trees.

jk, practice casting into circles rather than throwing wild. You can put light weights on your line and do it in your yard.

Anyone know good baits for bass fishing in desert environments? A buddy and I went fishing for about 4 hours last night and about 4 hours this morning off our canoe for stripers, white bass, largemouths and sunfish, and we didn't catch a goddamn thing.

We were throwing out anchovies, hot dog, nightcrawlers, slim jim, chicken liver, and shad for bait, and we tried rooster tails, spoons, divers, and topwater plugs for lures. We saw the fuckers jumping out of the water literally 10 feet away from our boat, but got 0 bites. Are we just unlucky? This is Phoenix, AZ area btw, so any experience from Lake Pleasant, Saguaro Lake, or Lake Roosevelt would be useful.
>>

>>811459
Was the water real warm? Might have to go with some soft plastics like Texas rigged brush hogs.

I mentioned it earlier, I will see the bait fish jumping at dusk when the bass are feeding and chasing them, but they won't hit any topwater, cranks, spinners, etc. but if I throw a Texas rigged worm or creature bait by the baitfish, the bass will grab it right away. Makes no sense but it works for me when the water is real warm.

Well, I went fishing for the first time. I didn't catch anything, but it was fun to just explore the lake, practice different rigs/casting, and be outdoors and such. some shit i found on another fishing forum:

>I am originally from Ural Mountains (Western Siberia).
>We had had a sport that called light line fishing.

>What it was is fishing for carp with exceptionally light pound test lines (difficult to say, they were in mm, but I assume there were about 1.5 lbt)

>You can fish large carp 10+ kg carp at power-stations coolers all year around. Warm water creates plenty of vegetation and they grow very big.

>Anyway, what you need is enough water space, very long (4.5+ meters) sensitive rod and spinner to hold 300 meters of line.
>Takes skill, to get 10+ kg carp out you need at least 20 minutes working it. Success rate about 60% if you are good enough.

>Side note: you cant release a fish. It gets too tired, it kills it.
>>
>>811479
That's what it is all about. Mid-summer is also kinda shitty for bass fishing depending where you are. You will figure it out.

>>811472
Yeah that's what the South Florida lakes are like from April to November and it's really hard to get bass on anything besides soft plastics fished slow during that time. January and February, the bass love crankbaits and spinners and will hit poppers right at sunrise and sunset.

Black Bass
Musky (rare and awesome)
Trout (brown, rainbow, golden, and brook).
Chain Pickerel (kinda rare)
Channel Catfish (best for eating and extremely consistent)
Blue Catfish
Walleye/Saugeye/Sauger
Yellow Perch
Striped Bass (also Hybrid and White).
Shovelhead Catfish (no creel limit for this, but they are a blast to catch I only fish with these with friends).

I once hooked a paddlenose (looked about 16") in the 80s. I thought it was a catfish until it surfaced and I had to cut the line immediately. You should have seen my face. They are amazing creatures.

For braid? It depends. Braid is more slippery than mono so sometimes on an all metal spool, it will slip and the whole coil of line can spin around the spool. A lot of companies put little rubber strips on the spools so you can tie braid straight to it. Just make sure the knot is tight and you spool the line on tight and you should be fine. My President spinning reels have the rubber strips, and a couple others might as well.

Otherwise you can put a strip of electrical tape or duct tape around the spool before you tie the braid on and that will grip it better with no mono backing.

On my Abu memecasters, they have these holes drilled into the spool so sometimes I just thread it through the holes and there's no possible way to slip.

So mono backing is for both spinning reels and memecasters.
>>
Canada Rod guy, think I'm gonna pull the trigger on the pfleuder trion combo which is ten bucks off at cabela's. Appreciate all the help, I don't know why I don't come to /out/ more often.
>>
>>811549
you need backing for any reel/spool that doesn't have rubber grippy stuff and you are running braid.
You can also use tape BUT mono is cheaper than braid so I always back larger reels.
>>
Bought a new $6 chatterbait at Walmart today and 10th cast got a 2lb-3lb smallmouth and my fucking knot slipped as I was pulling it out the water lost my lure god damn itttttt

I was fishing from a rock and the water level was about 4 feet below me, so I had to pull the thing 4 feet straight up to get it. Felt my 8lb mono stretching in my hand and ga-doosh it fell off. Time to switch to braid and learn the palomar knot

>I don't come to /out/ more often
Because there wasn't anything but knife, gearfag, and /x/ threads until we got a consistent fishing general. Props to KVD for keepin the threads going.

And you won't be disappointed with the Trion. Miami anon's boyfriend grabbed one of those and they seem nice. She was jealous when he got it because she liked it more than her Shimano Sienna.

>>811597
Are you the same anon who that happened to a couple days ago? Learn to tie knots for fucks sake. Palaomars can pull through as well if you tie them wrong, but they are easy enough if you aren't retarded.
>>
>>811599
No this is the first time I've had a knot slip. I tied the improved clinch knot same as I always do but I must've fucked it up somehow.
I'm gonna start fishing closing to water level so I don't have to lift the fish 4 feet vertical to reach it, that probably isn't doing my knot/line any favors anyways.

Honestly there's no need to make new ones as soon as the current one autosages because of how slow the board is but if you want to that's fine and it is good to have uniformity in the OPs to help maintain the general

Yeah that's the good thing because I can let is slide a few hours. But I like making a new one at the bump limit because if it gets to Page 7, we will end up with 5 different "I'm thinking about starting to fish, wat do?" threads. Or else somebody like Skid makes a new one and it doesn't have a link to the old one or anything.

YuroSaintsFan was the one person I could trust to make a good thread if I'm not around to do it, but he hasn't been around as much lately.

All I ask for is a link to the last thread and maybe the number of the thread. Also "Fishing" in the title so people can search for it, that helps. I know Skid is lurking, is that so hard to ask?

I would like to have some links in the OP so we can have a page with the rod and reel copypastas and beginner tips, but I can't into computers. So instead I just copy and paste 3 or 4 posts when somebody asks. Maybe I will work on that, I always see links for "pastebin" in the OPs of other generals but never looked into it.

Thanks pepsi, all I got today was two bluegill. Four hours of mepps and only two bluegill to show.

Though to be honest I was going to the two lakes where EVERYONE fishes so I'm honestly surprised I got anything. Plus the kind of mepps might have been a problem, used #2 Black Fury. All they had at walmart was black fury in different sizes. I did feel sorry for one bluegill, somehow the little guy got two of the hooks right through the top of his mouth. That's the magic of Mepps!

You also gotta remember it's mid-July, so most places the water is getting warm and if you expect to catch bass on spinners, it's going to be dawn or dusk. And even then it may be rough if it is really warm.

Black Furies are especially good for night time or dark and murky water but they will work any time.

I do have the 5/8 and 3/4 kroc. They are okay but the lc seems to produce better though it is 4x more expensive.

Though bucktail + super fluke flounder jig seems to work well for halibut too and that's my go to for cheaper alternative and when I want to fish deeper/rougher areas.

I'll try the kroc again someday though. I also use kroc for bonito or barracuda because I'm not going to throw my $20 lure at those things.
>>
>>812107
Throw them small irons like 7x jrs and tady c's, they're big enough so that you don't have to use wire for the cudas, and those things catch everything thats near the surface

So I bought all that shit for wacky rigs and drop shot rigs yesterday. Tried out the wacky rigs last night but didn't have shit for luck. Just ran them weightless. But to be fair, I was at the peacock lake with incredibly clear water. 80% of the time I'm there I get skunked, 15% of the time the largemouth are biting good, and 5% of the time the peacocks are biting.

I want to tie up some drop shot rigs to try out and I got some 1/8oz finesse weights like pic related. Do I really just slide the line up in it? It doesn't seem like it would hold without a knot.

How far from the bait should I run the weight? 12"? 18"? And what do you guys like to run on drop shots? I see pics of wacky rigged senkos and flukes but I'm thinking an offset worm hook with a lizard might work well.
>>
>>812111
depends, when im running something ike a brushhog or something like a crawfish on dropshot i keep it 3-10 inches from bottom , with worms and minnow immitations anything from 10-30 inches up
>>
>>812111
Yeah you just slide the line in - it pinches inside and doesn't come out unless you pull straight down on it with some force.

You choose the bait to weight length based on how deep you think the fish are, which is a trial and error guessing game. Luckily because the weight doesn't require a knot, you just can slide it up and down until you find the fishes depth.

A lot of people just nose hook a plastic worm. Also it's good to have an octopus hook for dropshots. And you wanna fish a dropshot as vertical as possible (e.g. from a boat) and just drop it straight down in the water ("dropshot")

If you're fishing from shore it will still work but dropshot won't be as successful as from a boat.
>>
>>812111
i tie a few overhand knots in the very end of the line to prevent slipping
>>
>>812113
I was just tying one with an offset worm hook and then kinda realized the weedless aspect probably isn't necessary. I will tie a couple and try them out. The offsets may be good for the flukes and lizards. I did grab some circle hooks for the wacky rigs and these drop shots. They looked like they would be the best bet without spending $5 for a 5pk of the Gamakatsu drop-shot hooks at Bass Pro.

>>812113
The weights were another thing where Bass Pro tries to get you. Huge selection of tungsten weights that cost $10 for a 3pk, so I grabbed the 1/8oz drop shot specific weights and then for heavier ones I'm just going to run the bell weights.

That still pissed me off that Bass Pro has their store brand hooks for a reasonable price but the largest they had for drop shot hooks was 2/0 and that would be useless for fat senkos and largemouths. I hate how they try and rape you on terminal tackle in the stores. If Dick's had anywhere near the selection of Bass Pro, I would barely ever shop at BPS.
>>
>>812118
I got some 3/16 dropshot weights at Walmart the other day - I think 10 pk for $2 or $3. They're lead of course but oh well.

And octopus hook is recommended because of the way the bend in the hook eye is - it makes the hook/bait be naturally horizontal in the water. Don't quote me but I don't think circle hooks work well with the dropshot
>>
>>812118
do you ever fish a chatterbait? I've been killing with it lately, both in clear and murky water.
>>
>>812119
As long as I tie it the right way with the Palomar, it seems like those circle hooks are sitting the right way with the point up. And they were working fine on the wacky rigs. I will buy some of those wide gap wacky rig/ drop shot specific hooks one day. I can probably pick up a handful when Dick's has one of their sales on Gamakatsus. I think I will be straight with those circle hooks for now.

And the drop-shot weights, I gotta look at some local Walmarts. They all have a slightly different selection but a lot of it is saltwater. I may just use the bell weights. I need to play with them a bit and see what I like.

>>812121
Nah you have mentioned them and I thought about grabbing one or two at Bass Pro yesterday but passed. I have a chartruese one but haven't used it yet.

4 casts, 4 sunfish. At least they are tasty.

I need to find out what the deal is with the Mayans around here when I want to do some panfishing. There are bluegill, but the Mayans are more plentiful in lots of places. Plus they get larger and fight harder.

Problem is they are a bit more picky than your average sunfish. Some days they love Mepps and small Rapalas, other days they just don't care. And they don't hit nightcrawlers like bluegill do.
>>
>>812145
Sometimes I'm lucky and when a sunfish is on the hook a big bass will strike it and get hooked.
>>
>>812145
do they like crawfishes?

Most of the time I hook the Mayans, they would be way too large for anything but a fuckhueg largemouth. I have gotten a couple of younger Mayans that were like average bluegill size (5"-6") but the majority of the time I hook them, they are 8"-10" or like medium crappie size. Those are a blast though because they fight so hard. Maybe I could get more small ones if I did a Mepps #0 or #1 or a tiny Rapala, but I'm normally running a Mepps #2 or #3 going for sneks or whatever when I get the big Mayans.

There are bluegill here too, but I think in my 3 years of living here I have gotten maybe 5 of them. They were all pretty good size, but they look nothing like the sunfish up north.

Pic was one of the smallest Mayans I have gotten. They don't have the sweet color of the big ones.

im a bit new and just read my states catalog. What do you do with species that are wanted dead by your state, like green sunnies and flathead catfish are a few listen in my state. (realistically speaking) Are those good to eat? Is it worth calling up the department and reporting in?

I never heard of fish being hunted just cause they're invasive, but it seems like an extra bit of ambition if it's fun.

Not sure. I actually grabbed some tiny jigs and those Net Bait Mini Pac Chunk or whatever they are called when I saw them in the clearance bin at Gander Mtn and thought about running that or just doing them with a small Texas rig. Haven't gotten around to it yet.

Don't waste the time calling it in unless they offer a bounty. Green sunfish will be tasty if they are big enough for you. And I've eaten channel cars a bit so I'm sure flatheads are good.

You could also catch the sunfish and use them as bait for the flatheads...

Otherwise give em a good clunk on the head and leave em for the birds. Or give em a slice and leave them for the crayfish and other scavengers in the water.

Pic related is my favorite invaisive species to target.
>>
>>812157
i think you may need to downsize even more, lighter line, smaller baits
>>
>>812159
thanks for the help. No bounties on the ones but thats what i was thinking.

also what species is that? (probably not on my state's list but interested)

Bullseye Snakehead. They are native to parts of SE Asia I believe and are invaisive in a small area of South Florida.

That Okuma Stratus V 25 with 10lb braid is bretty gud for casting lighter stuff and hauling those Mayans in. That's normally the lightest setup I have with me unless I'm specifically going after those guys. Like I said, I'm normally hitting them on #2 or #3 Agilas or ~2.5" Rapalas while searching for sneks or small bass.

The small jig I posted in that pic earlier could def get the larger Mayans. Their mouths are pretty small, but I can normally just barely lip them with my fat thumbs.

I think those Pac Chunks on a Texas rig with a 2/0 or 1/0 offset worm hook (non-EWG) with a 1/8oz bullet could get their attention. They will sometimes nip at larger brush hogs and crawdads.

Otherwise I could just break out the UL with 6lb braid and get a 1/8oz or 1/16oz underspin with a 1.5" curly tail grub or Gulp minnow on there.
>>
>>812194
lighter leader, try 6 pound mono, as long as you dont have too many weeds
>>
>>812200
That moss green 6lb braid is so damn thin already, I don't think that would be an issue. I have 8lb flouro too.

Bout time for a new thread

Pepsi I know they're an invasive species but if you're gonna kill all the snakes you catch you should atleast try eating them. They're very popular fish in Asia and actually taste good, it breaks my heart to see so much fish going to waste after you needlessly take their life for a picture on 4chan.
>>
How do you guys gauge how deep the lure/line is going when you troll for fish during dawn/dusk hours?

anyone have a recommended set up for line/weights? I currently run an inline spinner for my lure - not too sure about it's weight though.
