I fly fish for bream because I live in the south and there are no trout. Saddly, I can't find a new tippet so I can't fly fish any more.

Idk, probably a picture of a guy from kentucky who thinks that's what I meant when I said the south. When I say the south I mean where it's hot all year and herds of blacks fish for bream on the side of the road.

I love fly fishing for any species in any place. I might even be addicted if that is possible. I enjoy smallmouth, trout, carp and pike fishing the most. My favorite type of fly fishing is freshwater flats fly fishing for carp and smallies.
>>
>>806083
lol flyfishing is the easiest way to get away from blacks
>>
the things i love about fly fishing are the casting, attacks on the surface and fighting the fish with the line in hand.
i have caught pike, perch on streamer and roach on dry fly
my dream is to catch a nice baltic sea trout and i want to try dryfly fishing in a river
>>
>>806082
There are trout in the south or at least in south carolina
>>
>>806084
Must admit i am addicted too.
Target fish are trout, grayling pike and carp
>>806010
Just google it up ;)
>>806104
Oh yes. The attack on the surface is by far one of the most amazing things to watch. I love dryflyfishing and i am also tying flies. When big trout and grayling take your selfmade fly... best feeling ever. Flyfishing requires skill and patience but once you master it, it is the most satisfying way of fishing

Carp? As in regular common/European carp? What baits do they hit? Sounds like fun on a fly rod.
>>
>>807285
They're extremely opportunistic, but they have a particular affinity for worms.
>>
Looking to get into flyfishing, but have nobody to teach me so I'll probably buy the cheapest rod and start learning by myself. I just moved and I have 5-6 lakes in 2km radius and a couple od them has trout and char so I'll hit that.
Got 2 pikes today on a lake by my house, one on a shity cheap ass popper by kayoba and second on some other cheap spinner. Both around 30 cm so I out them back tho.

You can get something that is bigger and you can row around instead of paddle. Nothing better if you vehicle can't transport a boat or if the lake you are fishing is off the beaten path.
>>
grew up about a two minute walk from a pond out in the woods, always had great largemouth. picked up fly fishing at about 7 and did it almost every day til i moved out for college. ive never had time to go do serious trout fishing on the fly or anything like that but i would love to.

> plastic reels

You know that for most fly fishing all the reel does is hold line right? You do most of the fighting with your line in hand. This obviously doesn't hold true for fish like salmon, steelhead or any kind of saltwater fishing but that requires specialized gear no matter what.

On an unrelated note does anybody else hate loons? I'm growing to resent the basterds harrasing me while I fight fish.

>find out lake i never hit up 10 miles away has bass

wat do? should i go get a super cheap 7wt set up and get some poppers? or just ignore the temptation?
>>
>>810457
Why would you need a different weight rod? Never fly fished bass before.
>>
>>810434
How does it feel being poor?
>>
>>810457
You can absolutely catch bass on a 5wt. We've even considered dropping down to a 3wt or 1wt here for the smaller ones.

You can go with poppers, but quite frankly one of the major advantages of fly fishing for bass is that you can present much smaller flies more delicately. This can net way more luck in heavily fished areas.

I'd suggest starting out with some black and olive Woolly buggers. Check what nymphs are around in your area and try to imitate the bigger ones. An even, slow retrieve with an intermediate line should put it in the best position. You want it a few inches off the bottom.

Ask away if you have further questions, I've done a lot of bass fishing on the fly, although not in America.

>>810797
Arguably people tend to collect quite a few rods for different reasons, but you can fish nearly anything anywhere. If 'anywhere' involves salt, just rinse it thoroughly properly afterwards.

Any saltwater fly fishermen here?
>>
>>811094
I manage just fine, but even if I had a million dollars buying a brand new rod just to fish one lake seems kind of excessive. Do you hate money?
>>
>>811164
They're not that expensive, and you can always fish the same lake again and again.
>>
>>811200
But why but a new rod when all your current gear works just fine? What's the advantage?
>>

2wt Glass.
7wt is overkill for any northern bass. 5wt might be about perfect I'd say. Any more than that and you probably won't see a bend past the last 1/4 of your rod. Just use light patterns that will toss easy on the 5.
>>
>>811281
Aside from the general benefit of 'fishing with nice things', using a correctly balanced setup can significantly reduce fatigue in longer fishing sessions.

Just got an outfit and I'm ready to hit the water.

I've been practicing casting in my yard, but I think I'm doing something wrong. I always seems to make the whip crack on the forward cast, which I'm told is bad.

Stop sooner on the forward cast. Aim to throw the line up a bit as you cast. After that, wait for your line to fully unwind before bringing it back.

Fucking retarded is what that is. Goddamn I'm glad I live in rural Canada
>>
Been fly fishing since I was 10- started on the freestone rivers and creeks of Montana...and despite fishing all over the World- small mouth in Virginia, Walleye and panfish in MN, steel head in AK, Bonefish in MX/Belize, even some Nile Perch in Africa....

but nothing quite matches to simple, pure joy of catching a native cutthroat trout in the back country of Montana. (catching Bonefish is pretty damn fun tho)
>>
I did when i was young with my dad a couple times. I still fish with a spin reel and have wanted to get back into the fly for awhile but i just started regularly catching fish last year and i find it hard to reason getting into 2 types of fishing since its such an expensive hobby as it is

Also the fly fishermen that i see and know never seem to catch anything
>>
>>817759
Where are you from in canada?

>>818163

>>
>>817747
Well the pic is from a stocked commercial pond, a good retainment for old faggots and russians who would otherwise destroy our natural waters.

I actually exaggerated the issue a bit, sometimes Im still alone at the 60ha lake I usually fish, bot often enough there are swimmers, sailers etc. Just unavoidable in the summer due to the population density.

I'm looking for a pair of light weight waders for back packing.

Wiggy's have exactly what I want except that being in the UK the shipping is almost as much as the damn waders.

Does anybody know of any good alternatives?
>>
>>822406
What is the water like? Water shoes/wet wading not an option?
>>
>>824618
Water shoes not really an option as I don't want to carry around another set of boots etc.

I could wet wade but it's not ideal, I don't mind but I'd prefer to be dry. I think I'll just make my own desu.

I've come acrossed several fly fishermen who exclusively buy their flies. They'll ask me what I'm using and where I got that fly. I'm always dumbfounded when asked that. I thought a most fishermen tied their own, might just be a local thing though. I've looked at the flies at the local stores and they are ridiculously priced. Just surprised it hasn't been brought up in the thread.
