What the hell is in this state? Any good places to look around? Preferably on the Western side of the state.
The state is amazing but don't tell anyone.
North Central is the best part but there is cool /out/ stuff all over
>>803605
Wheeler Peak is alright I guess, and the Taos ski valley. Taos proper is alright... Pretty hippy dippy though and too much adobe and turquoise.
My wife is from acoma Pueblo. We will be going there in august . I'll let you know then. Excited to explore some lava tubes

Fuck n central! Rapists, drug addicts, gargs and cannibals!
Chama, Ruidoso and Las Vegas (marginally) are ok... except for the rapists and drug addicts!
> not google searching NM MURDERS

There is all sorts of /out/ stuff in the SW part of the state. Start with a visit to the Very Large Array. From there, you can take 52 south, and, if you're willing to get off of the beaten path, you will find shit that hardly anybody knows about that is cool like fuck. From 52, you can head on down into Winston, explore the Chloride area, go into the Black Range or even go into the San Mateo mountains. You won't run into very many people in the San Mateos. Also, look up Montecello (sp?) canyon. I've been meaning to get there. It's cool like fuck.
Another area to explore is Ladrone Peak. There are no man made trails on that mountain, and it is rugged. There are also caves that you can find if you're in decent shape. On the west side of the mountain, if you take a left (South) at a sign that tells you how far Riley is, you can get to a badass canyon with walls straight up and down that keeps on getting deeper and wider as you go along. There is all sorts of cool shit in that entire area.
>>803916
>You won't run into very many people
This is true for most of the state.
So easy to be in an amazing national park with no one for many many miles
Northwest NM has lots of good campgrounds and mountains with lush forests, similar to parts of Colorado. There are also some nice hot springs and warm springs up in the mountains. In the southwest, the desert is also quite beautiful, white sands is very picturesque. Ancient Indian ruins can be found throughout the state but Chaco Culture is probably the biggest and most well known. The cliff-side dwellings are also cool if you can find them.
The hiking and outdoorsy stuff you can do there seems unlimited, just go out and have fun. IMO one of the best states for the outdoors. Just avoid the inner cities, there's lots of crime and poverty there unfortunately.
I usually stick to within a 1 hour -1 1/2 or so of driving from my home.. This is Cebolla Mesa near Questa. It was nice, introduced a friend to camping taking them there.

This is Santa Cruz Lake. Pretty small but surprisingly nice, with good fishing.
>>804067
Thanks for the new wallpaper my man
>>804070
No problem, memorial day was really nice
>>804065
This is Tent Rocks on the Cochiti Pueblo. If you haven't gone, do it.
>>804279
They look like dicks but Cochiti also has a lake of you don't want to walk around giant cocks all afternoon.
>>803605
This is on 31 mile road near EspaƱola. Pretty simple logging/dirt road. Used mainly by poachers, target practice, Sikhs doing their Solstice celebration, and people offloading on the smaller trails
I love when people talk shit about NM. Yes, yes let the hate flow. Keeps people out of this state. More land of enchantment for me to enjoy.
Plethora of things to do there. Plenty of places that accommodate different outdoor sports/activities. Great scenery, rich history, and cool people.
Gun friendly, weed friendly (for the most part) and plenty of microbreweries. What's not to love?
10/10 state.

Other anon who wants to look at NM but doesn't know shit about it here, is there stuff on the EASTERN side? I live in Texas but haven't really payed any attention to NM until now.
>>804482
>What's not to love?
its fucking hot. the whole place is fucking hot.
>>804500
No I have. That might be my next long distance trip but not soon. I'm located in Ep but NM is my second home
>>804505
A large chunk of Eastern NM might as well be West Texas. There is supposed to be some cool stuff in the NE part, but I haven't been up there very much. Once you get West of Roswell, it starts to get a lot less like West Texas though. There is some cool stuff around Santa Rosa, but, as with most of the cool shit in NM, you have to get off the beaten path.

State is badass only for the wilderness or geology. It has a diverse landscape. Woods in the north, plains on the east, basin and range in the south, and plateaus to the west.
Hot as balls right now. So have to really plan your day. How far west are you? Corralitos Canyon areas is pretty cool.
Pic is from the Sangre de Cristo mtns.
Shitty pic is Eagle's Nest in the north. I'm a Southern NM native and the state is so huge that I rarely drive that far north, but it amazes me how different it looks
>>804521
This. Nothing is better than a nice cold beer after being in the field all day. Its so god damn hot here!
>>804556
I drove to the edge of a rainbow once. That was pretty cool. No gold, but there was this badass party with naked chicks in a hot tub.
I'm going to continue to bump NM thread until I go to the gym. Riled up my state pride.

VallesCaldera
Very recent "super" volcano eruption. Enough tephra deposited to bury a small city in over a hundred km of rock. The ring of mountains is the rim of the volcano.

Last one before I'm off.
I think this is Elephant Butte from the summit of Mud mtn.
Its exposed mid-Paleozoic sedimentary rocks uncorformably overlaying Precambrian metamorphics. I got to touch a 1 billion year gap in time. Cool crinoid fossils at the top.
>>804549
Not cruces. Your neighbor from down south, El Paso :)
>>803916
The area around the VLA is a great place to go /out/. The BSA used to run a High Adventure Base in a ranch across the street from it. (And yes I mean literally across the street). You'd show up they'd give you a map, compass, and then drop your ass off in the desert with instructions to show up at an outpost for resupply in a few days. No trails, just cross-country hiking in the desert. One of the best experiences I've had while /out/
>>804521
>frosty beer from a microbrewery won't instantly cool you down.
are you some kind of new hybrid faggotry hipster?
no bro, its fucking hot there. like really fucking hot. the whole state is pretty much a fucking desert. im not saying there isnt pretty parts, but holy fuck. no.
I'm back. What's that?! You guys want to see a picture of Aiden Crater wastelands?
Lava floods that occurred ~12000 years ago. So imagine the Earth tore open and basaltic lava like at Hawaii started oozing and spraying out of the ground.
>>804586
Eeeewwww. I hear some nice things, but I just can't stand it. Traffic, rude mexicans/texans/soldiers. At least there are some fun city things (and women) to do.
>>804620
No shit its like a desert
I always see people on /out/ post pictures of cozy woods, but I wonder how many could actually handle camping a few days out in the desert
New Mexico
>>804620
It's only hot during the summer in half the state. Northern New Mexico is mostly forest.
>>804620
>no bro, its fucking hot there. like really fucking hot. the whole state is pretty much a fucking desert. im not saying there isnt pretty parts, but holy fuck. no.
It's not that bad. Even on the days that it does get hot, it really cools down a lot at night. My morning low was 61f, and my afternoon high today was 100f. Phoenix is way the fuck worse. The weather during fall here is to die for.
The northern part of the state is not hot at all

Check out battleship rock in the jemez national forest district.
>>804511
Pretty much any of the national forests in NM are at the very least, OK /out/ tier. It's been a while since I've been down there, but yeah, it was pretty nice the last time I was there. It also gets you close to where the original Smokey The Bear was found and where a lot of the Lincoln County Range War (Billy The Kid) happened, so you can go see some of the touristy stuff if you want.
What's up NM bros, ABQ bro here
Heading up to Santa Fe Ntl Forest this weekend for some backpacking

Dude you're a fucking bitch. A whiny bitch. Quit complaining.
the nice thing about nm is that even on the 4th of july, there is plenty of mountains for everyone without being the slightest bit crowded.
You could mountain bike all day and see not a soul

My job lets me get out into the rarely traveled areas of the White Sands Missile Range, super dark at night and the camping I get to do is great, would post some pictures, but, that would give me away, not supposed to carry a camera

The next day was nicely shaded on the way back down
>>806538
The rain brought up this giant mushroom that I didn't see on the way up

>Preferably on the Western side of the state.
You really dont want to be near the texas or arizona borders.
the central part of the state is the best north up the rio grande corridor to the colorado border.
