I agree

Not really a meme baton, but perfect for everything else.

Kinda surprised they aren't more popular for camping and shit. Sure, they're big, but when hanging from your belt on strapped to your leg, it doesn't really matter.

I'd rather have one on me than a Mora in case of an animal attack.

Just FYI, opinels are pretty thin and flimsy and aren't made for carving wood or any use harder than food prep. You'd most likely be better off with a mora companion or something more robust for /out/ activities.

Wrong. Opines so can carve wood very well.
They are in fact the best folder for carving.
If you break one its your fault, not the knife.

The big ones like #10 and #12 can even split big pieces of wood if necessary.

Is it really illegal to own? As far as US laws, you could own anything, but there are limits to what you can walk around concealed. I'm pretty sure Britcuckistan is like that too. We could both own 7" switchblades and keep them at home, but walking around town with then in our pocket.

Fine

Will do everything you need of a knife. The design is old; they've been around for ages.

They're very pretty looking.

It's not a firewood cutter, but that's ok. It's a hunting knife.
>>
>>807392

The Mora pig sticker would make a pretty good diving/water knife, really.

Good grip, plastic and stainless.
>>
>>807388

Well, the traditional pattern bowies have timber/horn handles. You don't want that for water.

I'd go with a Condor Jungle Bowie (model 1); stainless and waterproof handle

>>
>>810276
>Kershaws just aren't cool anymore.
>>810279
popular opinion has nothing to do with why I said that

I have several kershaw and like them, it just depends on the model....I suggested a cryo to someone earlier, it's an excellent knife for the price

>it is a perfectly fine knife
ehhh...the flipper is alright, but otherwise it feels too cheap, even among the low cost knives I have....I've hardly used mine because of that
>>
>>810275

>poor choice

If it works, it's not a poor choice.

All folders are about the same, whether cheap or expensive. They all have the same weakness of zero tang.
>>
>>810295
>All folders are about the same
not quite

I've owned enough losers to know a winner when I see it....price doesn't necessarily matter, but the workmanship does

>They all have the same weakness of zero tang.
that is a matter of perspective....you could also say that a fixed blade has a weakness because you have to carry around a sheath

all knives have their limits; having a folder doesn't mean you cannot also have a fixed blade, use the right tool for the task at hand
(looking at you, idiots who think knives are meant to be hammered through logs)

I pretty much always carry a folder simply because it's convenient and it fits everyday needs; I also don't need to walk around with a large knife on my belt
>>
>>810029

Condor Rodan

It'll last longer than you.

It's cheap for what you get; it's as good as your Beckers and Ontarios, but about 1/3rd the cost.

it will snap 99% at the blade full tang makes no difference, these knives are hardened steel it will snap like glass, better heat treat will result in more flex before this happens. but basically yeah except for spring steel blades ground slowly from leaf springs everything can be broken easily.

Need some advice wood bros. For the next three months, I will be walking through right of ways spraying chemical to kill vegetation to maintain the lines. Pic related. Question is this: what machete would you recommend to cut through dense vegetation like such? I'm not going around hacking down trees, mostly just small saplings tall brush etc. Currently using BG Gerber parang but I hate it. Feels awkward to cut with, and just didn't work for me. Looking for something a little longer, with a different blade style. Don't have much experience with machetes. Price range is between 20-60$. Thanks

Now i'm not a metalugrist but, it depends on a lot od things, for example, stainless steel will most likely snap because it doesn't have much carbon and lots of copper or chrome, but a spring steel blade will just bend and jump back to shape since it's meant for that, it also depends on hardness, higher HRC will snap/chip easier while lower HRC will ding and bend easier but wont have as much of a chance of snapping
>>
>>817578
>>817461
>>817273
IMHO i really dislike the F1, feels like it lacks bit when trying to put a sharp point on a stick much like a FFG and the handle will leave your hands sore if you don't use gloves. I recommend you look at some other knives before selling yourself short or go to a knife store to handle one before you buy
>>
>>817610
If you're not using it for food prep just spray it with WD40, if you just need it rust resistant while it's in storage, rub candle wax on it, i wouldn't use beeswax because it stays on whereas regular candle wax'll just rub off with use so it won't go into your food after some light woodwork

I assume you're looking for a 4" long blade since you mentioned getting a Mora in the meantime, assuming you like scandi grinds a puukko might be worth looking at, not beginners knives by a longshot but work amazing, but i have considered getting an ESEE myself and DIY-ing a convex grind so that might be worth a shot, SteelWill knives have a decent reputation, but the ultimate in convex knives seems to be Bark River Knives, but they are expensive; expect to pay no less than $200 but ultimately you are paying for a knife that'll last the rest of your life

>>
>>818005
>stainless steel will most likely snap because it doesn't have much carbon and lots of copper or chrome
There are plenty of stainless steels which have 2 or 3 times the amount of carbon as a normal 1095 simple carbon steel knife.
>but a spring steel blade will just bend and jump back to shape since it's meant for that
Spring steel is usually just medium carbon steel with small amounts of Chromium added and sometimes some extra stuff like a little bit of Manganese, Molybdenum, Nickel etc
The main part of "spring" steels functionality comes down to it's heat treat and setup as a spring steel won't make a particularly good knife.

used the whole chain, coiled it into a somewhat cylinder shape then tack welded the ends and forged the air and gaps out. the forge welded into a solid bar. not entirely sure of what steels are in it. i've heard it's 1075 and 15n20 but im not really sure. it's taken a decent edge though and won't be put to any hard use tasks.

Do you want a bare handle like that?

I wanted an Izula, but then really wanted to see stuff in-store before buying. Unfortunately none of the big retailers around here sell Esees. One gun store had a couple but they were overpriced and the selection was thin.

Anyway CRKT has a bunch of small fixed blades in the $20-$40 range that aren't bad. I was looking at frame handled ones like the Izula that I could wrap myself or were already wrapped. CRKT has a Ruger knife like that, as well as another with a tanto blade. I think Gerber may have a paracord-wrapped frame knife too.

I ended up with the CRKT Spew which was nice and small for a fixed blade EDC. The handle looked more comfortable than the frame handles. The Minimalist is a tiny bit smaller, only run like $25, and come in 4 different blade styles.

>>818836
I'm thinking about that. I really want to get something fuckhueg and cheap for this big snakeheads. It is hard to get through those skulls with a 3.5" blade. I would like to be able to just slice the head off in one swing instead of stabbing through a really hard and thick skull.

No reason at all. Other than if you use one knife for all of your activities:

I love it. Have carried it near everyday for years. Might not be worth the money to some, but it's small enough to not be a nuisance and large enough to be useful. I have personally never liked folders, they are useful but just my preferance. The steel rusts quick so I oil it in the bush and on exercises. Keeps an edge well enough and is easy to sharpen. I recommend it but there will inevitably be people who disagree.
>>
>>820282

Well yes we can all be snobs about stock removal, but as you clearly misunderstand the sequence of grinding and heat treat to make it sound like a horrible negative, it seems it is in fact you who has an axe (well, knife) to grind.

Please feel free to watch any BRK shop tour video on YouTube which clearly shows them power grinding edges onto post-HT knives to the point of visibly throwing sparks.

Post-HT blades should never be power sharpened without liquid cooling, much less so aggressively they visibly throw sparks.

For the prices BRK charge you can get knives from small custom makers that are a little better acquainted with modern metallurgical principles and knife making best practices.

Ok, Old buck knives and new buck knives are NOT the same. They switched their primary steel from 440c to 420HC to save money, not because it's better. It's an inferior blade steel.

Someone gave me one of their mid tier folders as a gift and I'll say this:

The fit, finish, lockup, workmanship, and general feel of the knife are excellent.

The blade steel (420HC) will take a very sharp edge, but WILL NOT KEEP IT. Edge retention on my $100 buck knife is absolute shit.

Don't buy 420HC. They offer some knives in s30v and 5160. Those are real blade steels.

When they put "marine" on a knife handle and part with their regular choice of steel to go with something with higher corrosion resistance but lower edge retention they're saying "marine" as in water, not as in soldier.

Most manufacturers offer a salt water knife with those same trade offs in their knife steel.

But good for you for not knowing that.

1095 at RHC 55-57. Typical bushcraft knife. It will take a wicked sharp edge, but not hold it that well. However, it's easy to sharpen so unlike a stainless knife at that same hardness, this will be easier to sharpen.

The stainless model is 440c. A little more difficult to sharpen but not much. Edge retention will be mediocre.

A good quench will leave 1095 at about 66RHC. It would take a fuckload of tempering to bring it down to 55-57, so I'd wager these guys just do a sub-maximum quench and a small temper. The end result is on target HRC but the overall quality of the steel suffers.

Of course I don't know for sure if they take the shorcut or do it properly.

Have you used the Avispa and a Rat 1? I've always wanted to compared the two but I can't get an Avispa into Aus for less than about $60
>>
>>821369
I wanted an equal end jack like your pic, so I got a #54 in maroon micarta
>>
>>821397
Even better, I own both the Rat1 and 2 and both the Avispa and Zancudo.

Well, the Rats have a thicker (broader) Handle, a better feel in the hand and a crisper thumb open. They also don't have the framelock steel handleside, which I had to get used to.

The blades of the ESEE produced knives have a nice stonewash finish, in terms of factory edge all 4 of them come in a good sharpness and a nice, flat geometry.

Conclusion:
Rat folders: A little thicker, linerlocked
ESEE folders: A little thinner, colder, framelocked.

Both recommendable knives.
>>
>>821403
The thinner bit is attractive, I generally EDC knives thinner than my Rat which is usually reserved for /out/ carry.

Having recently just got my first PM2, I have to say they are probably Spyderco's best design.

Solid ergonomics, great lock mechanism, good blade geometry for actually being good at cutting things, etc.

The standard s30v model will do well with a coarse edge finish.

I waited for the BladeHQ CPM-M4 sprint because I prefer low edge bevels angles and fairly polished apex finishes, and M4 is a high apex stability steel well suited to thin angles at higher grit finishes.

it only had 4 or 5 of those lines from what i remember, and they all ran perpendicular to the blade. i only mentioned damascus steel because that's how the lines looked.

i think it was someone's personal knife. i tried looking for something similar but couldn't find it. all the blades i find have too many of those patterns and they never have that pinkish hue.

is the carbon preferable to the stainless by much? I would prefer the longer blade, but I'm only getting one of them...

No. In fact mora stainless is higher quality than their carbon, but the american market jizzs over the inferior carbon so they have to make it or lose sales

*you're

>>
>>821945

I don't think their stainless holds an edge any better than their carbon, and both are easy to sharpen. So, as far as stainless goes theirs is really good in the ease of sharpening department.

The "survivalist" types are always going on about carbon steel because you can sharpen it with river rocks and shit. Well, I'm sure you could do the same with that fine-carbide Swedish stainless.

I don't see any survivalist advantage to a mora carbon steel blade over their stainless.
>>
>>821963
Mora publicly stated their stainless outperforms their carbon. My mora is carbon. I dont give two shits either way because until we are talking high end steels the basic bitch shit is pretty much all the same, with chinkshit 420 mystery steel being below that. If we are to the point of sharpening shit with rocks its really not going to matter much.
>>
>>821958
No you dont. You take fanboy branding over function. You are retarded, and know jack shit about knives. If youd take a shitty gerber folder over one of the most popular knives to hit the market in years because of the fucking name you are a fudd. The leek doesnt outsell your gerber chinkshit because other people are ignorant to the glory of fucking gerber you shithead.
>>
Are the Ontario RAT folders decent enough EDC knives?
>>
>>808763
I got an Ontario TAK-1 and Nightstalker 7

They have the same handle and it isn't great like >>809115 said

It rusts if you don't care for it, same as any ESEE offering, but they are hardy knives to be rough with.

They are whopping, big fat knives that will go the distance, and the handles aren't comfortable bare handed (unless you have huge hands)

Gloved use is completely fine.

Due to the thickness, (most of the shorter models (like the TAK-1) feel completely off balanced to hold because the handle is significantly more heavy than the blade, the longer ones (like the 7) this isn't even a problem.

Looks like a good knife, if you like it make sure to spread the work, too many people talking about nothing but their meme knives that never put their knives to hard use. need for conversation about functional hardy tools on the internet.

It's a very nice steel, great if you want a steel that behaves like 1095 or 52100 but is stainless.

Basically, it's a great choice if you want a steel that can handle being thin behind the edge, using low edge bevel angles, running polished edge finishes and keeping them touched up regularly.

>fine jobs like making a feather stick

confirmed for never having been out of his basement.

If you think making a featherstick is a "fine job", I pity you, fool.

I can make great feathersticks with my 3/8'' thick kukri, and that doesn't make it a fine task knife.

Besides having a better handle (better than the tops' version, not the Beck one, but still miles behind really good handles), that blade succeeds at getting rid of the one thing that made the tracker perform adequately, and replaces it with a square brick - way to go.
