You could get the excursion 12' which is what I have. The walmart near me has them for $450, but their website says they're $550. So idk if that's a fault of my local walmart, or if they haven't updated the website. It already has 3 rod holders (two in the back and one up front). It might be something to look into.

As far as I can tell the aruba just isn't a "fishing" yak, but it's basically the same as the excursion. And I really like mine.

I can vouch for the crystal minnows. A couple weeks back me and three other guys went to the Canadian boarder for a trip, mostly going for walleyes. Very very slow. After trying ever technique in the book I was the the only one to catch any fish, and 6 of my 7 were on a 3.5" crystal minnow(1 walleye, 1 smallmouth and four northern pike). Then I lost it so I bought a few on eBay when I got back to civilization.

Took abu garcia vengence out to fish in local river.

It was low tide though so I couldnt cast out far enough.

Couldn't see where the thing landed most of the time and when I reeled in so no line was in water it usually ended up getting sent back to me via waves.

Then when I got home noticed a ring of line loose on my reel. It got so tangled I lost a bunch of line having to cut it to get it out of the bottom of the reel. (It was tangled in the part of reel nothing should have been in.

Should I just rip all the line off and pay a sporting goods store to re rig it for me?

Should I start out in a pond?

Maybe instead of jig and grub I should just buy a baitfish bait or something like those little yellow things or worms and set up a bobber.

How do I set up a bobber thing for that?

Ahh, you made it. Just replied to you in the old one. If you want to try live bait, pic related shows how to run bobbers. Otherwise get down on some heavier weights and google the "3-way river rig".

If you stick with lures, also check the youtube or google on how to fish em. Might want to read up on fishing rivers too. You want to look for structure or holes where the water isn't moving so fast. The predator fish will chill in the slow water and wait for baitfish to zoom past. You also always want to cast upstream with lures and fish them back downstream.

Jigheads are normally no bobber, put some sort of soft plastic on there like a curly tail grub or little minnow, cast out, and swim it back to you. You can do it at a medium speed, or real slow and bounce it off the bottom, a bunch of ways. Youtube and Google are your friends. And learn the good spots to fish (especially in rivers) and cast upstream as possible.

I still think you should grab a Rooster Tail or Mepps just because they are super easy to fish with and catch tons.

I don't know why people think pier fishing is just throwing some frozen bait on a hook and letting it sit for hours. Most of the fish I have caught off the pier have been with doc's goofy jigs, gotcha plugs and other lures. I have lost track of how many blues and spanish mackerels I've caught with this plain old rat-l-trap that you probably have sitting in your tacklebox right now. Lures are incredibly effective at the pier, especially at dawn and dusk.

those sun dolphins are made really cheap. thin plastic hull. And if youre a bigger guy a SINK will be a pain in the ass for you. a SOT is really what you should be looking for but its understandable if you live in a cold climate.

try the kiss method and dont over complicate your yak. take it out without any of the shit on it and fish then figure out what you need. A crate works well with SOT's not so well in sit ins so you might try to figure storage options that work in tight spaces.

Yes those are great for beginners cause they'll have all the basic knots, give the rundown on the basics when it comes to tackle, and teach you about what to look for when fishing a lake and where the fish are likely to be given the time of day and year. That's probably your problem. When you pull the knot tight, it creates friction, which can weaken the knot. I just put the knot in my mouth and make sure some spit gets on it before I tighten it.

I found the fuckin spot today. Went down to a tubing put in at the local river and it was perfect. Nice clean rocky bottom with lots of side channels and deep feeder creeks. Caught a bunch of fat redbreasts and a big shoal bass.

I'm giving up on shit river and moving on to city river.

From what i have read and experienced personally, palomar knot is preferred because it is both fast and reliable. In this chart you can see the palomar knot compared with various other knots on various different 20 lb mono line. For almost every line brand, the palomar outclasses the improved clinch knot.

Other knots are better, but it depends on the line you're using too.

Last Wednesday, I hit Loch Raven reservoir, in MD. In three hours, me and a friend caught two Bluegill and a Yellow Perch.

Slimy as hell, and took at least two hours to clean and fillet. We blame the really tiny scales.

No pics. Didn't think about it, until after we were eating.

I may do it again this week, but first I'm gonna have to buy some new gear. My friend lost three hooks and three weights.

There is a bunch of stuff in that price range that will be nice. If it were me, I would probably have a hard time deciding between one of those St. Croix Mojo Bass rods or an Abu Garcia Veracity. The Mojo Bass rods come in a bunch of different actions so you could look for one that will handle the weight of tossing heavy catfish rigs.

I've seen people washed off of sit n tops 10 feet from shore. Once you're past the breakers you're good but if you've ever gone down in the 3 foot water with 5 foot waves you're pretty fucked. Rods will be broken, you'll be slammed into and dragged across the bottom, etc. What my uncle does is find a rip and launch there, then race to the side as soon as he's past the breakers; then he surf's a wave in to shore. He has a buddy on land to grab the front of his yak and they both walk it on to shore. I'm sure if I just tie a short rope to the front I could just get shallow, jump out, and walk it in. But any advice is appreciated.

Do you have a heavier catfish rod? You may not be going for 30lb+ fish so a heavy bass combo could work. I have a 7' Ugly Stik combo that I bought to bring to the pier. Put 40lb braid on it too so I figure I could haul most of the stuff I catch up the side of the pier. Only problem is it doesn't handle super heavy weight the best and isn't long enough for those giant casts like a surf rod.

Aso super easy to add shit to it, as opposed to drilling a hole in my kayak i added a milk crate with pvc for rod holders, Now my kayak can have 6 rods maximum , The milk crate also serves as a perfect raised seat ( im going to cut a piece of plywood to make it a bit more comfy) , alos the milk crate fit 3600 boxes nearly perfectly ( 4 fit in mine even with my rod holders) Milk crate is held down with removable zip ties
the only other modification ive done is add an anchor and a place to wrap the anchor up, Wich is only 3/4 ( i think) inch pvc stuck in the scupper holes in the front section and i have a nail through the pvc to prevent it from falling down further through the hole and a hole drilled into the pvc to still allow the scupper hole to function ( worth noting thiat isnt the net i normally bring ann i dont normally bring that many rods ( i usually bring 2 maybe 3) but like to have space for a net, or if im bringing rods for someone whos kayak doesnt have rod holders

Check out the Pfluerger President. The "30" size would be nice for what you are thinking of. It is a tiny bit smaller than most "medium" sizes but larger than an ultralight. I have one and run 15lb PowerPro braid. That might be the answer for your trout and salmon deal.

It's on a 6'6" medium weight, fast action rod. With the 15lb braid and that rod, I can easily cast 1/8oz lures like small Rapalas and Mepps and it can handle 1/2oz crankbaits and spinners. It is fun to catch 10" Mayans and 5lb bass with.

Pic related is the setup I was talking about. That's actually the President LE which is $80, but the regular President will be a silver/blue reel body and runs $60 US. The "35" size is pretty big so I would look for the "30" with your purpose in mind. Anything smaller than that might not have the drag for a big salmon, even with heavier braided line. Very solid reel for the money and everybody who has owned one seems to reccommend them.

At the local lake I always take a trash bag with me for my trash and trash I find. Someone actually stopped me once time when I was picking up plastic trash from bait containers and old fishing line. Their logic was a bit odd, but was essentially "I don't think you should pick that stuff up, you probably are not allowed to because look how old some of it is."

NJ guy here again.

Went to walmart and was once again too overwelmed by choices to buy anything.

I saw a mepps agliea but they only had size 1 and 2 so I passed for now.

What size wormhooks/bullet weights do I need?

I am leaning towards going to a local tackle shop later this week and also just doing some basic worm live fishing with baitholder hook, steelshot and a bobber.

Do normal hooks break down after a while? I want to catch turtles on bank lines this summer, but they have to be 12" to keep and I don't want to harm any small ones by leaving a hook in their throats or trying to yank it out.

And something like 1/4oz should be a good size. Maybe a size smaller (3/16oz).

But if that's still too confusing, the bobber, split shot, and nightcrawlers is the way to go. You can learn how to set the hook and find the fish without having to worry about snagging lures or choosing the wrong size. Then once you figure that out, go back to the lures.

It looks like they come with some grommets to kinda seal it. Plus you are going to be attaching everything on the top. If anything, put a bunch of silicone in the holes before you do the rivets.

Or just save up enough for a proper fishing kayak.

Just got back from pier fishing west Matagorda bay.

We fished from about 5pm to 1am and didn't catch anything aside from a handful if croakers/hardheads/pinfish. It looked like nobody was catching anything. It didn't help that every place was sold out of live shrimp.

This morning, a storm rolled in. We were already fishing when it rolled in, and the bit picked up. I got a couple red drum on a popping cork, but that was it.

We just went "Fuck it" and we headed home. Going to head out to the spillway at Somerville in a few hours for hybrids and catfish.

Speckled trout > rainbow trout.

Not that I don't like catching both, but the only trout we get are tiny dumb farm raised ones that you catch on prepared bait.

Can't compare to searching for and hooking up on a 20+ speckled trout in the surf.

Channel, blue, and flatheads.

I've caught plenty of nice channel cats. I've hooked a couple flatheads, including the biggest fish I ever caught: 35lbs flathead.

I've never actually caught a blue catfish out there. I go up to Granger lake for them.

With the Mepps, #1 and #2 are good for bluegill and crappie so it might be worth grabbing a #1. And then you could get a #4 for bass.

And there are so many different crankbaits. I think a good one to start with would be a gold Orginal Floating Rapala. They will probably have those at Walmart. Rapala Husky Jerks are great too, they will run a little deeper though so don't snag them. The small 1.5"-2" Rapalas will be good for the smaller stuff and could still hook bass and like 3"+ just for bass.

Something like these little Storm lures might work well for you too. The one on the right with the one hook on top, those will catch anything depending on what size you go with. They don't get snagged very easily, you can just fish them with a steady retrieve or jerk them around, and they are like $4 for a pack of 3. Walmart carries those normally too. They will come in a yellow package and say "Storm".

It's the only reason I shop at Dick's online store lately. They have been offering free shipping for me with no minimum. You can also pay online and have pick up at store for certain items. One advantage of Dick's online purchase over in-store is those Buy x get x off deals. For onine store, for example if it's BOGO 50%, they would take 25% of all items in cart. Meanwhile, in store, they charge full price for the more expensive item and reduce the price of the cheaper item. Therefore, If you buy items with mismatched price, you don't get as good as a deal in store compared to online.

Catfishing and carpfishing can be more active you're active and make an effort to be where the fish are.

Too many people think you just toss out hooks covered in prepared bait as far as possible and wait 2 hours for a bite and if that doesn't work, then you keep waiting.

That'd be like bass fishing and only sticking with one lure, in one spot (ignoring structure and cover), casting to the same place, with the same retrieve, and hoping a fish will strike.

If you do cat fishing right, you'll be moving to different spots, catching live bait, targeting different areas, changing rigs and presentations, etc. Just like any other fish.

Flatheads especially are predators who usually won't hit anything other than a live swimming panfish.

Plus I usually take an ultralight rod to catch panfish for bait- thebiggest catfidh are almosy always consistently caught on live or cut fish- and if I'm having absolute zero luck, I can at least catch them.
